RIP, UGA VII
ATHENS, AP-Uga VII, the bulldog mascot of the University of Georgia, has died after being shot over a disputed poker match on Thursday afternoon. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Exclusive footage of the scene has been obtained by EDSBS.com. Uga is seen here in the lower portion of the picture on the side of the table closest to the viewer, and appears to have an ace clamped in his toes under the table.
Details are still forthcoming, but eyewitnesses say an argument broke out over accusations of cheating during a regular lunchtime poker game between Uga and several local players he knew and played with frequently. Georgia fans were stunned at the announcement this afternoon. Speaking on conditions of anonymity, one source close to the program offered the following verdict:
“How we can lose a damn good dawg like this and still have Willie Martinez is…it’s just…it’s just not right.”
Burial details have not been finalized, but an investigation is underway. If you recognize the St. Bernard in the far right corner, please contact the Clarke County Sherriff’s Department. There are no suspects yet, but he looks like he’s staring daggers through Uga, doesn’t he?

Any LSU fan would beg to differ. We have a connection with our Mikes. Our current Mike (aka “Roscoe”) is the only Mike my son remembers. I go back to Mike IV. My grandfather told me stories about Mike I. He’s more than just a zoo critter to us. He’s our spirit animal; the living embodiment of what it is to be an LSU fan. We get it, at least here. My condolences to the Bulldog nation.

Well, I guess that means a new Uga will have to take the reins. If I might , I humbly suggest that if Martinez remains as DC, UGA makes a change from the English Bulldog with all its associated tenacity and fearlessnesss to a bulldog of the French variety. It’s appropriate since Georgia’s defense has made opposing teams’ offenses look like rampaging panzer divisions tearing through the Ardennes. However, the “ARP ARP” we’ve come to love from our neighbors to the north will have to be modifiied. Here’s what we’ll have to look forward to:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9TRdcY1Q5k

Poor lil’ dawg. Uga VII seemed to be the best-tempered Uga of them all, but you could tell he wasn’t long for the word. Thing could barely walk, he was so fat and deformed. If the Seilers and all other purebred breeders would stop with the dang inbreeding to turn these animals into freaks, they’d live longer. Anybody who thinks it’s OK to selectively breed a critter that has to be delivered by C section because of its giant head has got something wrong with them.
Uga I was kind of a normal-looking dog. They have gotten more and more bizarre since, and Uga VII, while a sweet, good doggie, looked like the spawn of a pot-bellied pig and a Pekingese. C’mon, y’all, let the genes air out a little, even if you do wind up with something with a head smaller than its shoulders and front legs that aren’t bowed into a circle.

Doug @39: Uga VII death trumps techs footbaw success because, as I understand it, tech does not represent the state of Georgia. How many of GT’s students are in state? Not many. Add in the historical in state dominance of UGA on the footbaw field and it is not surprising local news prefers to cover anything UGA.
However, I do understand your frustration. I myself am technically trained from a school whose successful football team is overshadowed by it’s in state rival.

@65. This is a canard. Most of Tech’s undergrads are from Georgia (and only about one-third of the grad students are from overseas). The football team is even more heavily skewed to Georgia (the current recruiting class are ALL from in-state). What makes Tech not embraced by the state as a whole is that it’s for smart, math nerds. UGA doesn’t have an engineering program, and it does have an ag school. So the bulk of Georgia’s college-bound kids, looking at the liberal arts, agriculture (it’s a big ag state), law, medicine or business, aspire to UGA. Only the math nerds aspire to Tech, although its curriculum has broadened somewhat and has always included a big business school (if mathcentric).
