ALABAMA’S SECRET? RADIATION POISONING
You can’t fault Tidesports.com for their logic, which is closer to epidemiology than actual analysis. Alabama, rather than being a football team, is instead a vector for some kind of infectious agent causing loss of confidence, physical weakness, and an inability to properly communicate with teammates on field. Additional side effects may include loss of coach, ranking, and explosive rectal bleeding:
One statistic drives home the point. Alabama’s 12 opponents were a combined 23-17 (.600) before facing the Tide. After losing, those same teams went 31-39 (.442).
Three head coaches no longer have their jobs (Clemson’s Tommy Bowden, Tennessee’s Phillip Fulmer and Mississippi State’s Sylvester Croom), with scores of assistants updating their resumes….
Only two opponents are still ranked, neither in the top 15…Of those three, only LSU is bowl eligible, and like many other SEC teams, they stumbled badly down the stretch.
So the secret is out: Nick Saban has been inserting depleted uranium shell shavings into the Tide’s morning meal of tiger meat and nettles, making the entire squad radioactive enough to induce low-level radiation poisoning.
I see what you are doing, Coach Saban. Vladimir approves.
A walking, Nike-sponsored Chernobyl, if you will. If you do come into contact with the Alabama football team at any point, you should cut off your clothes without removing them over your head, and immediately shower repeatedly with soap and hot water. (Couldn’t be a weak floundering SEC as a whole. Nope. We’re going with depleted uranium shavings as a more plausible explanation.)

Conversely, Alabama does seem to be the team that exposes their opponents’ weaknesses first, somewhat redundant, except for LSU and Tennessee, so there is that.
The problem with Florida is that they don’t seem to have too many weaknesses, just had a bad day versus Ole Miss, who is certainly improved from the days of the O.

Some of those teams were UP for the elephant. I mean completely geeked. Moreno was doing 40 yard sprints as hard as he could go in the pre-game. LSU was pretty over the top with emotion for that game. Those two fan bases in particular were deflated after the losses. On the other hand, Ole Miss took it as a lesson learned. It is all more a reflection on the other teams than indicative of anything about the Tide.

Coop has it right. If you can reasonably extrapolate anything about the record of teams after playing Bama, perhaps the most plausible is the Tide’s coaching staff is so good at gameplanning and preparation that they do the equivalent of leaving an exam answer key underneath the chair (or really on the blackboard) for the next classes…
Florida’s achilles heel, if they have one, appears to be ball control, a truly ironic affliction considering Meyer’s absolutely obsession with it. Florida’s coughed the rock up all season and with distressing regularity, and the Ole Miss game shows that they’ll pay for it if they’re not running on all cylinders…

Alabama and UF have played 6 common opponents.
AK, Ole Miss, TN, UGA, UK, LSU. In 3 of those games UF and Bama had a less than 5 point differential in the final score. Bama beat AK by 35. UF beat AK by 31. Bama beat Ole Miss by 4, UF lost by 1. Bama beat TN by 20. UF beat TN by 24.
Gator fans should be cautiously optimistic this week for 2 reasons. First, UF blew the doors off the other 3 opponents, while Bama squeaked out victories against UGA (by 9), UK (by 3) and LSU (by 6) in OT. Against these 3, the game was over before the start of the 4th for UF. Brantley engineered several TD drives against UGA and UK with Tebow resting on the bench.
Second, the Gator defensive brain trust and players have faired very well against stopping run oriented offenses with NFL caliber backs. See e.g. Mssrs. Moreno and Scott.

You might be realistic, but the other 99.9% of Bama nation will not hope, but expect a championship. I wasn’t aware JPW was held in such high regard from the fans I’ve encountered. Add that to the SEC West being yours for the taking. AU looks to be down, LSU still not ready, Ole Miss and Miss St are in Mississippi, and Arkansas will have an uphill climb even if Petrino isn’t wishing for new employment. I’m sure Nick will recruit 32 more players this year and kick 7 underperformers/felons off the team.

I vote to keep the SABAN as Putin analogy. Both characters are utterly terrifying and brutally effective.
Alot of people hate Saban. He is an ultracompetitive asshole. But I’m glad he’s OUR ultra-competitive asshole. Coaches hate him because you cannot out-work him. No matter how many hours you study gametape, or obsess over recruiting, you know that the light will still be on in his office long after you’ve turned it in.
That’s why i’m so excited about this game. Urban is just as obsessive and driven as Saban. I think this is a meeting between the two best coaches in the sec, toting two teams that are physical manifestations of these two maniac’s ideals. Saban’s Sledgehammer verse Meyer’s Scapel. It’s a great game for the fans.
I saw the way Ole Miss beat UF. It took mistakes on UF’s part, but the other ingredient was relentless physical play from Ole Miss’ front. Alabama will do the same to a greater degree. We will put ourselves in a position to win and capitalize if UF makes mistakes on special teams or turns the ball over.
As a Bama homer, I give my team a 1 in 3 chance. Make that 1.5 in 3 if Percy Harvin Sledge is inoperable.

Over sensitive Bama fans,
I think your coach has your guys playing like a team, not individuals. Your team may very well win Saturday evening, though I think they will fall short. There is a reason you are 10 point dogs, others feel as I do and they are betting their money accordingly. This would be a fine opportunity for those of you who feel differently to make some money.
I still believe that Nomadic Nick is the kind of guy who is interested in what else is out there no matter his success. He likes to build winners. Preserving doesn’t interest him. That is just my opinion based on his prior actions. There is no doubt that he built Bama back up. His work there has made them a favorite for next year based on what we know today about the other teams in the SECW.
Quit being miserable winners. You are so sensitive about even faint praise, that you think everybody is damning your school, when in fact we are giving you credit.

In all seriousness, if, and this is a big IF, we can run the ball like we have all year and put together 6-8 minute drives we’ve got a shot. 1 TO max and very few 3 and outs and there’s a chance we pull it off. Otherwise, it might turn into UF - UK.

Crabapple,
Two things:
1) Don’t confuse your getting called out for making moronic statements with others whining.
2) What is it about Saban’s track record re: taking new jobs that is apparently so difficult for you to understand? The places he coached prior to LSU (e.g., Michigan St., Toledo) weren’t even arguably top tier jobs. Consequently, his leaving those programs was and is entirely unremarkable-he was simply climbing the ladder within his profession just like any successful individual would be expected to do. His subsequent departure from LSU wasn’t because he felt the program had reached the pinnacle and “preserving doesn’t interest him.” Rather, he had an opportunity to get back to his NFL roots and prove he could get it done at the highest level, all the while pulling in a nice chunk of change-again, an instance of simply climbing the coaching ladder. After a brief stint in the league, Saban realized that he preferred the college coaching experience to that of the NFL (or, if you’d prefer, he thought he couldn’t cut it), and thus made the move to Bama (we can certainly all agree that he didn’t leave Miami because he’d built them up and had no interest in preserving, can’t we?). Hell, Saban himself has said on numerous occasions that he wished he’d never left LSU.
If Saban had a long history of making lateral career moves, your conclusion might actually find an ounce of factual support. But, as noted above, that simply isn’t the case. Don’t let your hate cause you to abandon rationality.

MSR - Touchy much?
Saban left MSU for LSU. At the time a lateral move. If he’s the incredible coach and/or recruiter he’s cracked up to be, why didn’t he just keep on winning the BigTelevEN?
He’ll be at Alabama a few more years, then on to the next thing. It’s what he does.
But don’t worry, it won’t happen for a while. Meanwhile, be happy with 10-2 or 11-1. He’s proven he can accomplish that.

rjsplow (#20) -
I was almost with you in the first paragraph, and then you went and tried to make an original though. Not only do the Gators have the #1 turnover margin in the country, they are in the top third of teams in terms of not putting the ball on the ground. And that is with nearly half of their fumbles on the year coming in one game. Without that game they would be tied for 7th. In addition they are tied for 3rd for least number of turnovers lost.
“Florida’s coughed the rock up all season and with distressing regularity”
Have you seen the Gators play this year? I’m assuming no. I’ll say this, though you were right about one thing, the Ole Miss game once again showed that turnovers are the single most important determiner of who wins a football game. That’s why Meyer coaches it so hard, and why only one other time in his career as a head coach has his team lost a fumble 3 times in a game (Utah vs. TAMU 2003).
Ball control… really? Do you watch football?

MSU to LSU a lateral move?
MSU will always be the other school in its own state…and will be the 4th choice at best in the surrounding recruiting area…behind Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Noter Dame. At LSU he owned a state with more than a few blue chip players and could compete in the neighboring state of Texas and near by state of Florida…where I am told they have some pretty good HS players as well.
But if you want to think that MSU to LSU was a lateral move, be my guest. We’ll all assume that you also think that having Pam Ward call your games in West Lafayette at noon on WWL 8 is great exposure for your university.

Because I have observed said fans in extremely close proximity and I have to tell you, I don’t understand it, I don’t know what it is, but there is something in the water down here because when Alabama is on the TV usually rational and sane human beings go absolutely batshit crazy and well-up with a sense of false pride that is unmatched and unparallelled in anything I have ever seen anywhere. This is not an over dramatization…I wish I could explain it better, but I don’t have the words to describe these crazy mother——s.
With that out of the way, the one thing that EVERYONE is missing about Alabama is that their SOS is ranked 88th for a reason. They have played some of the worst offenses in the country. Look it up.
Let me put it into perspective for you. Michigan’s Total Offense and Scoring offense ranked 111th and 90th, respectively.
Bama played roughly 5 teams with similar type offensive rankings. Although the team records might not show it, there are at least 5 teams on Bama’s schedule that were as poor as Michigan’s offensively…3 that were worse…Tenn, Miss State, and Auburn.
Any team that had a pulse on offense scored points on Bama’s defense.
There now that I have jinked myself and will have to endure a Bama win over Florida for the SEC title I guess I’ll go have a drink.
My only wish is that someone please put an L on Bama so that I don’t have to drive past 5,000 car flags every day (where were all those flags last year?).

After all, it’s apparently perfectly normal/acceptable to be a rabid enough college football fan that you spend hours a day on a blog dedicated to the topic, but getting too happy over your team winning renders one “batshit crazy”?
Then again, it’s abundantly clear from your comment that you’re simply making shit up, given that you failed to provide even a single example of the type of behavior you find so reprehensible. “I can’t explain it, but these fuckers are crazy…no, really, these people are insufferable…take my word for it.” Now that’s some pretty meaningful shit right there.
