BLOGPOLL, WEEK FOUR DRAFT: GIBBERISH. ABSOLUTE GIBBERISH
This week’s draft is below. Sense, this makes none.

| 23 | Nebraska | 1 |
| 24 | Vanderbilt | 2 |
| 25 | Georgia Tech | 1 |
Ya Bully Rah for: LSU, Alabama, and Wake Forest, who all look intimidating in their own weird ways. LSU: Bold, aromatic talent; Alabama, formidable body and flavor throughout; Wake Forest, the economy pick for the smart consumer.
BOO’ins for: East Carolina, who we may mercifully drop, Oregon, WVU, and Clemson. Double boos for Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, who are both probably too high for any sense to really justify, but points pretty things exploding Big 12 cupcake illusory BOOM YEAH.
The rest: is gibberish, but you’re damn right that’s Vanderbilt down there.

I’m as big a Gator and SEC homer as you’re likely to find, but I must question Oklahoma behind LSU and UF. Oklahoma is frightening in many ways. The least of which being that they currently have a more complete offensive attack than either UF or LSU and have a nasty, SEC-like defense. I’m still thinking that they’re a legitimate #2.
Of course, I’m not taking into account their propensity for January meltdowns….

Auburn? At #14? Moving up 5 spots? After losing to LSU this week, and barely holding off a horrid Mississippi State team last week?

Orson,
Please explain the rational for dropping OU to 5 (and you know how painful this is for me to ask, damn it) when they had a bye.
Texas moving down a few notches?
I’m just calling this SEC bias unless I am proved wrong.
Your loyal viewers deserve an explanation or we’re just moving on to…well, no. There isn’t a better site.

Blon: because the bye means we get no data, and thus have to move up teams that spent the weekend playing football. On the revision we’ll apply the rule more evenly, but that’s the rationale.
As for Texas, they’ll probably continue to drop because of their schedule that stays nougaty-soft until they play Colorado and then Oklahoma.

@ Erica: Don’t worry, hell will stop freezing over once I ask the following question and jinx the whole endeavor:
Could my beloved Vandy win 9 games (Mississippi St, Duke, Kentucky, Tennessee, Wake Forest) this season???
Now we’ll be lucky to get one from here on out. Happy?

#5-Fair enough.
I was watching the Big 12 show this morning on Fox Sports SW (which tells you how bored I was at 8am this morning- Fox SW is horrific). The conversation turned to the defenses in the conference and the lack thereof. I got me thinking…are they that bad overall or it that the offenses in the conference are so good that our view is skewed? And how can you compare stats from other teams (defenses) when the qb/receiver combos may not be on the same level? (Daniel is very talented, but without Maclin, would he have the stats that he does? Bradford is surrounded by talent everywhere-line, receivers, etc. Not to take away from his talent, either.) You can look at baseline talent on each team and make some determination, but what about the unit as a whole?

Are you sure it should be Georgia Tech and not Virginia Tech? The Hokies did beat the Jackets…

blon,
The only teams to display any ability on the defensive side of the ball this week were Texas and Colorado, and I’m reserving judgement on Colorado because they went against a truly retarded offensive coaching staff.

Poor Oregon. They go through quarterbacks like candy.
They finished the Boise State game with their fourth string, in case nobody’s paying attention.

What I just can’t get out of my head is the fact that Georgia, after playing a top 10 ranked Alabama this upcoming weekend, has to go to LSU, then Florida, and then Auburn. Jesus, watching those teams play this weekend makes that look like the gauntlet it was purported to be prior to the season beginning. I mean, Tennessee’s fallen off, but Vandy (!?!) is undefeated and gunning for Georgia as well. Hell, every ESSEECEE team we play this year might be ranked at some point during the season! If Kentucky can hold up it’s end of the bargain before November, that might be unprecedented.

O,
You’re right. Sense. None whatsoever. BUT, you are consistent in that you penalize teams for playing cupcakes, see e.g, Mizzou, Penn St., Tex, BYU….then reward Texas Tech and tUOS for, um, playing cupcakes?
And, consistently, logically ding OU and Wisconsin for being idle, while, um, rewarding Nebraska and Okie State for the bye?

And I’m not sure I understand the severe drop for Wiscy, particularly with Fesno State getting a four-point jump. At first, I thought you downgraded Wiscy because Fresno State just barely pulled one out against Toledo. So, I suppose the argument was that the close call against Toledo makes Fresno State suspect and therefore the close win by Wiscy is now suspect.
But I see Fresno State ranked and getting a boost.

I fail to see the relevancy of WF being ahead of BYU… The Stormin’ Mormons (which is a way cooler nickname than whatever they could possibly call themselves) have won 103-0 in the last two games, where as Wake beat a team that hasn’t had an offense about 5 years…. And yes, I consider Wyoming/UCLA the equal caliber of ACC competition.

We know LSU has the talent, we know Les has the balls and if Lee can even approximate that second half performance with some consistency then…
The first bowl season I recollect, 1982, Vandy went. The next year an issue of SI had them ranked with a 4-0 start. Vandy excllence or at least competence in football seemed par for the course.
How astonishingly magnificent (if virtually impossible) would it be for Vandy to take the East and then take Les, his balls and his Tigers to the wire in the SECCG.

So LSU is deeper than Auburn overall and the big taiback runs hard… but that long td pass that broke it open was kind of uh, lucky.
Maybe I’m less impressed with Auburn than overly impressed with LSU. Auburn’s offensive line is not deep, and not very impressive.
The Hat called a great game, though. The 4th down they converted, and the half-back pass…

Personally, I don’t think there is any way Neb should be sniffing the top 25 right now. Beat Va Tech, maybe, but Vandy and Ga Tech have both done far more than Neb.
Texas’ D is pretty legit, that is a solid offense they faced in Rice, not USC 2005, but decent.

There are a lot of inconsistencies:
1) OU drops for a bye, USC and other teams do not.
2) Texas’s defense played well against Rice, a team that almost beat ranked (sic, normally would be rank) Vandy on the road.
3) PSU is at 6, but there schedule hitherto is filled with cupcakes.
Although I am biased, Texas deserves more love than is given at 12.

Jesus H. Tapdancing Christ der shatten. WTF are you inhaling? Play Southern Cal and tell me what a cupcake they are. I hope they play an SEC team in the BCSNCG to shut up all of the pinheads that think football is only played in the south and everywhere else is some form of pussified rugby.
Orson obviously has issues with ratings since he is nearly MSM now. But a BCS bid doesn’t depend on it and I’m sure after a few more weeks, things will shake out. BTW, tOSU is doing what needed to be done and getting ready to piss off a bunch of people in Pasadena, this year and next.

Offhand, it looks like Wake Forest and Wisconsin should be switched. This is more a statement against Wake Forest (who really didn’t do anything other than let Florida State prove they suck, same as it’s been) than it is for Wisconsin, who seems to have dropped because the coin kept coming up tails instead of on-field play. That’s not terrible as reasons go, as long as it’s just a draft.

Playing a non-cupcake and getting your ass handed to you isn’t impressive. If it were, the directional Louisianas and Michigans of the world would all be ranked.
Mediocre wins over cupcakes (see Ohio, and Troy, ibid.) does nothing but convince the rest of us that right now, OSU is probably staring up at PennSt. (if their players can avoid jail) and Wisconsin. And because I hate them, I’d love to see an Northwestern and/or MSU upset of the suckeyes as well.

If you are going to criticize the poll, you should know where it comes from. It’s not Orson’s decision, which is why it’s called the “Blogpoll,” rather than “Orson’s Patented EDSBS Poll,” which then we’d have one from Holly, too, I imagine. Go back to this post to see how to figure it out:
https://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2008/08/20/blogpoll-week-negative-one/
About a billion blogs vote, and they come up with this approximation/abomination (depending on your perspective):
http://mgoblog.com/blogpoll/voter-grid.php
That’s it. So don’t blame the man; it’s just reportage. Blogs being what they are, no professional lack-of-bias required when placing votes. Not that that counts for AP or USA Today, either. Pay no attention to the man behind the green curtain. Make a blog, I guess, if you want a say.
Oh, and I’m with Will (the other one). Ohio St can hardly hang its hat on Ohio and Troy St.

Hoss, I think YOU are the one who doesn’t understand this. Yes, the blogpoll is the final standings of the ballots of hundreds of blogs, but THIS poll we’re all bickering about is EDSBS’s personal poll that they submit to the overall rankings. So yes, Its perfectly fine for people to take their shots at Orson where they see fit

@ 40: In the respectfully disagree category. A) OSU will win a hard fought one against Wiscy. B) Even JayPa can look at film and deduce that , why yes, tUOS has a very very difficult time matching up with secondary receivers in space. Combine that glaring weakness, a mortal running game (depending on Beanie), PSU having better speed and a freshman QB, and I’m thinking that it’s PSU’s year to demolish one of the lil’ sisters in Pasadena (assuming that USC -BEST TEAM EVAH!- goes through unscathed).

You give JayPa too much credit. The secondary receivers in space weakness was there last year too, didn’t seem like he caught on then. I also fully expect Beanie to be back by then, and our Freshman qb is no ordinary freshman.
that being said, they could still lose. It’s a rare night game in Ohio Stadium so I wouldn’t count on it.

I realize it doesn’t matter what your ranked until the end of the season, but we spanked Rudy and sent him crying back to South Bend(aka Spartan Stadium South).
