Coach Mark Richt, only survivor of the "Crusades of the Great Nick-quisition of 2008"
Tuscaloosa, AL- If you listen to alot of regional talking heads, you would be lead to believe that UGA's HC, Mark Richt, is on some sort of hot seat. What I am trying to figure out, is why Georgia fans would want him to leave, or why they would want him to stay? When Bama rolled up there, after Bama had rolled thru an overranked Clemson, and just beat them down, Tommy Bowden eventually lost his battle with the disease called "Being the HC of Clemson"..
Bama was 4-0 and looking pretty good for what Bama fans were expecting. Honestly, before the Georgia game I thought we would have a loss to Clemson for some reason since we had a lot of youth contributing. Georgia was predicted to win it all with two future NFL stars coming back, and they looked good beating Florida the previous year.
So when we got there, many of my Georgia friends were letting me have it about how they aren't worried about Terrance Cody and how Knowshon was gonna run up and down the field. I was worried about that until the injuries for Georgia were piling up on both sides of the ball, and a TRUE freshman was at Center. Thats when I knew Georgia was screwed. No middle to run, which means one less blocker for Hightower or McClain, which takes the edge away, which equals trouble. And it was a beautiful half of 31-0 and utter shock for Dawg fans. Hats off to them for the second half. It was basically a replay of the Clemson game.
After that game, Bama was looked at differently. As the season went on, we saw the face of college football in the SEC go thru major coaching changes. Clemson, Tennessee, Auburn,Arkansas, Miss. St and Ole Miss all gave their head coaches walking papers, Kentucky would change theirs due to retirement the next year, only to leave LSU, Georgia and Florida as the only teams that lost to Bama with HC jobs intact, although Urban Meyer had more than likely had some symptoms and had ignored his health for awhile before losing to Bama, nearly working himself to death with heart attack like symptoms that turn out to be painful spasms due to acid reflux, maybe ulcers in his throat. Now with expectations on Bama, Florida, Georgia and LSU, even Auburn this year, does LSU and Georgia falling short of the SEC Champ game equal coaching changes? Does Georgia beating Florida this year save his job? If both LSU and Georgia fall short, who in the Wide World of Sports does LSU and Georgia go and get? Do they both bid for Will Muschamp?????

Richt
A loss to Florida (which will almost certainly occur) will not lose Richt his job. Barring an unforeseen disaster season of epic proportions, Richt is not currently on the hot seat in any meaningful sense. Check again this time next year.

There is a long, LONG list of reasons to want him to stay.
As to why he’d be wanted gone, that can be deemed in one of two categories, 1) idiots and 2) people who think Finebaum or Bianchi or Schultz, among others, mean what they say and aren’t pot stirring jaw flappers (which not coincidentally puts them in category 1). It’s a media-fueled, media-created load of hog wash. Mark Richt is no more likely than ANY other coach in the SEC to be somewhere other than their current school in two years.
Yeah I said it, Mark Richt is just as likely to be somewhere other than Georgia as ANY OTHER coach in the SEC is to be somewhere other than their current school, and this includes Saban and Meyer.

That’s what people said about Tommy T. and Fat Phil (to a lesser extent). So I don’t think you can just flatly ignore the talking heads. That being said, I think Richt has at least 2 years.
What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.

When you go two years out...
is anyone safe in the SEC, or even nationally? One could make an argument on any school needing a new coach in 2012, even Florida/Meyer (health?) and Bama/Saban (never stuck around 5 years anywhere before).

Nah
I was around for the Goff years, and Richt isn’t on any kind of hot seat, especially since he canned Martinez (finally). Why we want him to stay is simple: he has the best winning percentage of any coach in school history, consistently recruits well, and is an upstanding representative of the University. A win over Florida this year and he’s golden.
Having said that, we’re riding a streak of two blowout losses to Florida in a row. Two more, and we may have to think long and hard.
Dawg fans can handle losing; what we can’t handle is not being competitive.

He is a player's coach
He’s good for the kids.
Why should he leave? He might have stagnated a la Tuberville. I mean, he came in when Florida and Alabama could be had and he’s benefitted from some weaker than usual SEC teams. Some folks suggest he can’t keep up with Saban and Meyers.

Les Miles . . .
is ironically about the only SEC coach who has not been publicly flogged and humiliated by Saban at least once.

Chizik hasn't been
The post says “publicly flogged and humiliated” before anyone points out that we lost narrowly to the eventual MNCs last year. By stating that, I am not counting a moral victory just stating a fact. Why do I feel I need to defend myself prematurely? Oh yeah, that’s why.
And Les is pretty good at self-imposed public humiliation…so I guess Saban hasn’t felt the need.

What I am trying to figure out
Is why non-UGA people spoon up this “hot seat” slop despite all evidence to the contrary?
by Grib on Jul 30, 2025 4:19 PM EDT reply actions
Because all evidence isn't to the contrary?
I’m not a Georgia fan but I am friends with many. And a sizable chunk of them want his ass canned. Stupid, I know, but they do. And these are smart guys and gals that are probably among Georgia’s more thoughtful and patient fans. I’m sure the idiot redneck quotient has a much higher population of fans wanting him gone. As best as I can tell (from limited exposure), those wanting him gone aren’t even close to a majority of UGA fans, but they do exist in meaningful numbers. And while some articles might seem to imply a greater proportion than that, I don’t think I’ve read anything that suggests all or most UGA fans want him gone. If I’m wrong about this feel free to correct me.

Because we have nothing better to do.......tired of waiting for football season
Kinda like the Tubberville syndrome…..when just beating your rival over a 10 yr period isnt good enough, then along comes Saban and does it in half the time or less for a MNC…
Nick Saban ain't afraid to drive 700 miles, just to whoop a man's ass...

Wow. That's quite a Bamacentric view of UGA's head coaching position.
Nick-quisition? The Richt vs. Saban head-to-head record gives only a slight edge to Saban at 2-3, including two bad Georgia losses and one royal beatdown of LSU Between the Hedges. I assure you that last year’s loss to Kentucky and the last two Florida games have a hell of a lot more to do with how we judge our head coach than does the 2008 Bama game.

From a Dawgs perspective. Explain what happened during the Blackout.
That year was full of suprises for Bama, good and bad. As it was for Georgia.

I would htink the performances against Kentucky hurt most of all
Not to trash my own program of course. But as much as it sucks losing to a rival, Florida is, well, Florida.
My Wildcats are not Florida nor even close. But we’ve taken 2 of the last 4, and it was damn close to 3 of 4. You might remember (I think it was ’08?) that you needed a 70+ yard pass to Massaquoi followed by a 3rd and long TD w/under 2 minutes left to escape. Seems to me that those performances ought to sting more than the Florida losses.

The Michigan thing is kind of an interesting thought
What level of SEC coach could Michigan get? Saban/Meyer seem doubtful. Richt/Miles seems pretty doubtful too. Petrino would seem more likely, but I think Michigan fans want a more highly regarded coach.
Saban did leave a decent NFL team for a team in the midst of crisis, so who knows what coaches think when they make their decisions. Nobody seemed to want to go to Tennessee, and they were probably willing to pay a good amount. I doubt it’s financial. I bet Notre Dame would have paid Urbz or Saban 7 million a year if they could have gotten either.
