Poll voters reach deep inside ass, pull out rankings. As badly as Georgia was hammered by Alabama on Saturday night-and it was, as commenters noted, a balls-deep hammerbanging prison romance for the first half, and a noble but doomed comeback in the second-Alabama was a ranked team, unlike Oregon State or Ole Miss. If you’re gauging degrees of defeat, you rank Georgia’s as the most respectable of debacles (since Alabama really is that good by evidence,) followed up by USC’s (on the road) and then Florida’s (completely imploding and eating self-ass pie at home.) The fact that Southern Cal is above Georgia is the first time we’ll actually side with Georgia fans: you’re getting the UFIA for the second time this weekend. With that stated…that was some Final Destination-level killing out there. Heavy objects being dropped on unsuspecting heads. Grown men in tears. Death, inescapable crushing death.
THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LET NICK SABAN PLAY WITH HEAVY MACHINERY!!! Like USC after the Oregon State game, the Alabama Slamma’s toll is more than just psychological: Knowshon Moreno has a severe contusion on his elbow (in casual terms, a kickass, bone-deep bruise,) TE Tripp Chandler reaggravated a shoulder injury, split end Kris Durham sprained his ankle, and linebacker Dannell Ellerbe sprained his knee. All are doubtful or just plain out for the Tennessee game. “Alarming.” Well, that’s one word for it. Florida is getting back to work, which is good since they did very little effective work over the weekend. You know how that is: you roll out of bed planning to go to the office, then X-Men 2 on FX sucks you in for an hour or two, then you dither with the idea of cleaning out the fridge because that week old vegetable stew is starting to grow legs, and then you lose to Ole Miss at home. Meanwhile, a jubilant Ole Miss contingent discovered that you don’t touch Florida Field during gametime: It’s open the whole week, but during the game they guard it with dogs and billy clubs. This is an improvement over the Sixties, though, when National Guardsmen ringed it with bayonets. The Nutt family nearly had the dogs turned on them as they took the field to celebrate, as well, which would have been the only real defense played on the field that day by a representative of UF. Playbook includes “sack” and “throw away safely.” The qb competition opens up again for Tennessee because Jonathan Crompton has been positively crapulent under center for Tennessee. There’s more on this later, but if the backup comes in and takes a one yard sack every time they step in, this would be an improvement over the horrorshow that has been the Clawfense thus far. Numbers: they’re fun! Against Auburn, Crompton was 8-of-23 for 67 yards. During the fourth quarter, he was 0-for-6. Those eight completions were a team low since Rick Clausen went 8-for-20 for 69 yards in UT’s 2004 loss to Auburn in the SEC championship game. Jake Locker, mercifully out of commission. QB Jake Locker was injured in Washington’s home loss to Stanford, and has mercifully been put on the bench. If there’s any justice in this world, Ty Wilingham will soon follow with a torn resume and severely bruised career. Excellence in commenting, Vol. 23. RUMSFELD!!! Somehow I think Tebow’s summer of playing with little boy’s wangs had a part in this. We received no less than four comments that were a variation on this theme. When’s the plague happening? Soon? Soon enough? The Stand is a comedy, right? Laurie Garrett, TCOAN and ourselves are heading to Montana with a T1 line, arms, and three years worth of supplies. The rest of you are on your own. |

Florida and Georgia lost AT HOME. in fact, Georgia was humiliated AT HOME. They both should drop like a stone in my opinion. You don’t lose to Ole Miss at home, and you don’t go down 31-0 to anyone at home.
USC did lose, but on the road. Ohio State lost to a top team, on the road, and dropped further than anyone else did. No sense.

Vent on.
Couldn’t and didn’t watch the game (have a heart murmur and not taking any chances) but doesn’t Florida supposedly run a “SPREAD” offense. Why then, when the money’s on the line, revert to a “Compress” which gives any defense a decent chance, if not the advantage? If you really believe in the spread, use it. I don’t remember Wuerffel running the option when UF needed a big first down?
Tebow smash reminds me of the USC v Texas White up the middle, a viable play in general, but not in make or break short distance situations. Did White have a better chance than Bush sprint left and cut up when available? I know running East/West has the potential for bigger losses, but I gots to believe Harvin/Rainey and co. have a better chance than even a baby Rhino, praise be to his name.
Vent off.
Finally, as for SEC West, vs. East, I tabulated the all time results (’92-present) last year and keep it updated.
Reg Season (including 2008): West 150, East 139, 3 Ties
East however is 10-6 in the championship game.

I’m surprised that it took SEC teams this long to figure out that “Tebow off right guard” is the Gators short yardage default setting for over two years.

Just for the record, Bama’s team dna matches that of just about every National Champion over the last ten years or so.
1. Head coach in his 2nd - 3rd year at a big name school (Tressel, Meyer, Miles, Carroll, Stoops, Coker, Saban).
2. Team has a solid or senior QB (Tressel, Stoops, Meyer, Miles, Brown, Carroll, Saban).
3. Unbelievable run defense.
The only missing piece for Alabama is a staff full of assistant coaches destine to be head coaches.
Let it also be duly noted that each of the coaches mentioned above have failed to either get back to the NCG or to win another one. Carroll is the only exception as USC won 1/2 of the NC.
I think there is a clear reason for this trend. Usually, these teams have some talent and potential for a lot of success. What it usually needs is a quick infusion of new talent via recruiting and the mix up of a new staff of coaches that know what they are doing. I believe this gives said program the opportunity to catch everyone off guard; make it hard for other teams to prepare for them, etc.
Over time, we all know that coaches and teams become somewhat predictable. Florida certainly has; so has Ohio State. And at this point one of two things happen: 1. the team (coach) continues to do what they do with the mentality that “we are going to do what we do and see if people can stop it.” or 2. the team (coaching staff) decides to mix it up and bring in new coordinators, or even a new coach. See Auburn, Florida State, Texas, etc.
I think it is going to be very hard for a program to dominate like programs used to back in the days of Woody, Bear, Bowden, JoePa, etc.
Carroll is the only coach who has come close to cracking the mold of the coaches who come in and win big in the first few years and are able to sustain their success.

I hate having to take solace in not being alone in shitting the bed. The most annoying thing about it all is that Bama wil probably end up dropping two or three games down the line and I’ll wonder how the fuck Georgia managed to get raped by John Parker Wilson. Just shows that no pressure and soft coverage can make almost any quarterback look good. Georgia still has the potential to win out, but if the pass rush remains spotty at best it ain’t gonna happen.

Pants, you are correct. Had tOSU done what UGA or UF did, we would have been dropped from the rankings. If any other team had to play without their best player and start what amounts to a backup, they would suffer the same fate as tOSU in LA. The difference is that SC and the SEC teams get a pass. PSU will be hyped until we smoke them in Columbus, again, then everyone will say that they are overrated.
Go ahead and polish those turds Georgia and Florida. At least my Buckeyes don’t lose to the unranked. They only lose in spectacular fashion to the highly ranked. Now we fly under the radar. We may get a rematch with SC again in the Rose Bowl, and with Terrelle Pryor and a healthy Beanie Wells, that Rose Bowl win will be no surprise to me. Should SC get the nod for the NCG, I’m sure this would be a good year to face an SEC team in that same Rose Bowl.

Another Ole Miss personally witnessed fish hooked-throat gagged-hate fucked roundup:
1) So nice to be the only Gator alum in a family whose Ole Miss alumni list includes father, mother, brother, uncle, uncle, cousin, cousin, grandfather, grandmother, and 3rd cousin (off the top of my head). Hearing about Eli Manning, at least once, 90% of every waking day for 3 years was fantastic. This? EVEN BETTAR!
2) Surprised at the police presence and overauthority, Rebba fans? So was my sister on her first visit to the Swamp. I’m not sure “impressed” would be the word to describe her emotional state when I pointed out the Florida Highway Patrol, Alachua Sheriff’s Department, and University PD flavors as they poured onto the sidelines. Anybody that’s ever attended school in Gainesville, and was there, also knew that the Gainesville PD must have been left out because somebody’s gotta patrol the streets for open containers.
3) Jerrell fucking Powe. Unbelievable. The dumbest human in the entire fucking stadium was giving his version of the “loser” symbol to us seated in the endzone. It was an unholy mix of the “thumb to nose and wiggling your fingers” thing from childhood, and the “L” sign with the back of the hand to the forehead. Basically, it was the “L” sign, but with the thumb to the forehead and the fingers not wiggling. Does that even mean anything?!? Did Powe just break fresh ground in the physical gesture taunting world?
Summary: Pain.

Crabapple-
Let’s be real honest here, you were missing a RB not a QB so while its a devastating loss its not like you were screwed for the get go, additionally, Florida lost by 1 on a blocked XP, OSU could have lost by 50 and probably would have if Carrol didn’t play the 2nd and 3rd string the entire 4th quarter.

@ 21 - Georgia didn’t lose to an unranked team either; it lost to a team that may very well be as good (although certainly not as deep) as USC. OSU got dropped 9 spots after USC; UGA got dropped 8 spots after Bama (sure, we’re tied for 10th with USF, but they didn’t get anally raped over the weekend). The biggest difference is that USC then went out a dropped one to an unranked team. That is why I’ll be rooting for Bama to roll everyone else this season as well.

Bama - Socratic et al
No team is ever as good or bad as they seem, except Syracuse. If you insert a seasoned Terrelle Pryor and a healthy Beanie Wells, the offense is better by multiples. The NCG is really only possible with the total collape of many teams in front of us, like last year.
SC had their chance to control their destiny and fucked up. They aren’t out of the national picture because they aren’t the only team to lose to an unranked opponent. They just had the good sense to lose on the road. I’m sure they don’t want to rematch with a “new” tOSU that will see them again next fall in Columbus.
But if the Buckeyes win out in convincing fashion, they will get no credit for a mid-season QB switch, beating Wisconsin at night in Madison, or beating a PSU team that everybody today thinks is for real, until tOSU wins. Then everyone will talk how overrated PSU is, though they may only lose one game. This season looks to be very compelling.
As far as meeting Bama, somebody is going to be our first SEC victim in a bowl game, may as well be you guys.

“At least my Buckeyes don’t lose to the unranked. They only lose in spectacular fashion to the highly ranked”
tOSU’s NC losses over the past two seasons were to teams that had a combined 3 losses in SEC play. If LSU lost two games in conference last year, how many would have Ohio State lost if they were in said conference? Also keep in mind that LSU needed practical miracles to beat Florida, Alabama, and Auburn last year. Would have Ohio State even made a bowl last year if they played in the SEC? Alabama didn’t, and they were a couple of fumbles away from beating the eventual national champion.
