To clarify, its not something that happens most tailgates, but you probably don’t have to look very hard to find doche’s like these. Its one of those things where they talk like this only after they’ve look around to make sure no black people are in the vicinity

Glad someone else thought that this wasn’t TOO out of the ordinary. As sad as that is to say, growing up in the south, you can find this attitude in a varying number of places, not just tailgates. I am not saying I advocate it, but it exists. I thought this was a little mild, especially after the warning I was given over on Deadspin. The north must be a happier place.

It’s not usually displayed in this manner because there usually aren’t people with video cameras asking these types of questions.

I’m sure the questioner has a certain objective here.

DISCLAIMER: I am white and consider myself as more liberal than my metro Atlanta peers.

However, having dealt with housing issues in several communities I do agree with one of the sentiments expressed by one of the individuals (the guy who did most of the talking at the beginning).

People do get accustomed to living in certain surroundings no matter how atrocious they might become. People who live in “transitional” housing or public assistance housing for any length of time will begin to identify that area as their neighborhood. People fearing change would rather stay where they are familiar. I’m sure some members of the populace are just fine with where they live because it offers a market for certain illegal activity, but that can happen anywhere.

Anywho, I’ve seen 80 year old ladies who refuse to even join the discussion about moving (temporarily) while housing conditions are improved because it’s “their” neighborhood. I’ve seen families refuse to cooperate with CDBG projects that would give them funds to fix up their own house because they feared the government was coming in to check on other things.

And maybe those feelings are somewhat justified given history.

So the N-word guy was blatantly racist, but I wouldn’t condemn all the others for expressing their disapproval of life in the projects.

And I just opened up a can of worms….

This is the exact reason I cannot stand the south. As an OSU fan, I had (for the most part) a good time down in New Orleans, however I saw so much shit like this going on and could not believe how absurd the entire situation was.

OSU and OSU fans often get portrayed as a bunch of uneducated drunken rednecks (especially by UM fans), but we have nothing on anyone from the SEC.

I agree very strongly with #15 above, how can these people have so much hate for black people outside the stadium but then support them so strongly inside the stadium? It really doesn’t make sense to me…..

The only reason you don’t see this more up northeast is a near-total disregard for college football there; replace the tailgate with a local bar though. . . . Now, I don’t know about the Midwest, but it’s a mistake to think this is a Southern problem. Imagine those guys with Southie accents, or Jersey accents, the scenario is equally plausible.

And I don’t say that as an excuse. Rather, we do ourselves and our society a disservice by pretending that the problem is regional.

As to the seeming paradox of hating black people and rooting for black people, it’s basically that racists in the south tend to dislike black people as a group but not on an individual basis (at least not simply because said individual is black).

Inferior Race Question Dept:

When I talk to people and they start complaining about how bad African Americans are (low test scores, low income, jail population numbers, death rates…) I ask them a simple question;

Are African Americans inferior to Whites and other races? The answer is always “No”.

Then I ask them what has contributed to African Americans having, as a whole, those statistics. The answers then come back as being from poor families, or single parent households, poor infrastructure (schools, housing, parks, blah, blah, blah).

So, people born on second or third base should feel fortunate that they started there in life, as opposed to other people that started out not even in the game to begin with…..

…enough of this stuff….too heavy……

Right…’cause there are no racists out west. Can I ask your opinion on South American immigration patters?

Also, I have friends in Boston who regularly say they are “glad there aren’t as many black people up here as in Atlanta”. I don’t know if that’s demographically true, but they say it.

Anyway, racism sucks. But, in my opinion, there are specific arguments about the actions of certain groups that are fair game. Though most of the LSU group in the video seems to prefer the former.

A couple of things. As a white male who grew up in the fine state of Alabama, this video was tame. The main speaker didn’t say anything that i haven’t hear about a million times from almost anybody, even the more cosmopolitan types with money. Is it sad, i don’t know, that’s the way it is.

They can hate outside the stadium the same way it probably happened during roman times when gladiators fought in the coliseum. Winning is colorblind.

And please don’t act like the south is the only place where this “racism” exists. A joke told to me by some college age Germans shows the rest of the world hates other countries and ethnicities in much the same way. ” What do you call a Swede on a bike? A thief.” For those not college educated the funny part of the joke is that the swede stole the bike he is riding.

Honestly some of the points that one guy was making seemed somewhat valid — not knowing anything about any of this. I wasn’t clear as to the woman who was filming’s purpose. If she paid so much in taxes as she claimed, then why would she want to be footing the bill for housing projects and the like?

Think of the odds of being more an American.

The problem with race relations in this country is that if whites are critical of the behavior of blacks then it is automatically called “racism”. Of course, the guy who piped in with the N-word comment was wrong to do that and there is no justifying using that hateful word. (Both the N-word and the C-word really are the two most imflammatory words in the English language , and should never be spoken aloud!) But the other guys were just expressing their frustrations with a subculture that refuses to do anything for itself, and then bitches when others don’t work fast enough to suit them. As a taxpayer, I too, resent wasteful welfare. These guys are fed up, and the bleeding heart lady who approached the testosterone & brew party with a camcorder and a question guaranteed to elicit anger from most honest TAXPAYERS, should be glad that one of those beers didn’t accidentally spill on her head.

Can’t we all just admit that what we don’t like are freeloaders? I don’t give a shit whether it’s a black guy in the projects, a white guy in the trailer park or an Indian on a reservation. At some point the statute of limitations on excuses for why you don’t have a job runs out.

For crying out loud, there are people who are paralyzed from the waist (or even neck) down who manage to earn money and not suck off the government. Do you have any idea what that takes to overcome something like that?

i love louisiana and i’m proud to say i’m from there but this is a viciously ugly fact of life about the place that makes it the sad reality i’ll probably never go back.

working at a newspaper in the middle of the state’s rural heartland i can assure you, this behavior is more common at every social level than one would feel comfortable admitting. and the incidents themselves were not what i found disturbed me to my core, but rather the fact they were not only permitted but, deemed acceptable by complacency.

so much so that it might be worth counting the number of responses in this thread where the folks admit this behavior isn’t even particular egregious compared to other examples they have witnessed. we’ve become inured to the behavior and that’s the true tragedy here.

lastly, it should be noted that the video shows a privileged white man in attendance of an event where young black men are prized for nothing more than their physical skill isn’t irony, it’s a sad truism about how little progress has been made in this country over the last 150 years.

One of the points made in the video, concerned “transitional” housing. This is housing which IS NOT an entitlement.

Similar in form and substance is “transitional” employment (i.e. minimum wage jobs) and “transitional” education (i.e. High school). These aspects should never be considered a permanent lifestyle, but rather a beginning to improve ones self.

The republican party loves it because of the economic boost it gives to the big money corporate interests (even though the rank and file hate it).

As a son of the South who went north to school and married someone from the west coast - I feel compelled to tell all of you - THE MOST RACIST PEOPLE IN AMERICA LIVE IN THE NORTHEAST OR IN THE WEST (ESPECIALLY CALIFORNIA). So many of these people have moved to Atlanta and for some reason they feel like all the white people who grew up here “must hate blacks and jews and hispanics” like they do - so they just spew it all the time around me. To cross into another area of the thread, instead of having the economics of the restaurant business dictate $5 / hour under the table to an illegal immigrant, let the restaurant pay $5 to a citizen, and have the feds add an extra $3 / hour on top. Not exactly a great wage, but cheaper than welfare.

Going back to our friends the illegal immigrants for a minute - they get jobs partly because they work off the books, and partly because they will actually pick up and move somewhere to get the jobs that exist. And they adapt their lifestyle to the wages rather than complain that it isn’t the other way around.

At the risk of playing into the hands of the yahoos in the video, I do believe that there comes a point where - if there are no jobs where you live - you either move or start something yourself. But people of all hues and economic strata don’t want to do that, whether they assembled cars in Ohio or cleaned toilets in New Orleans before they lost their jobs. And this is a free society, we can’t make people move.

So on that basis, like I said above, I’d rather see the government subsidize work or provide micro-credit to allow people to pull themselves up, but when the incentives are to sit in place and do nothing, I’m not going to allocate the blame solely to the butt-sitters.

DC, the idea that we should stop subsidizing unemployment and instead subsidize employment has merit IF welfare is stopped. However, “a government that bases its existence on robbing Peter to pay Paul, will always have the support of Paul”.

As for minimum wage jobs being “transitional”, I still think they provide a means of motivation and discipline, but should not be viewed as any semblance to maintaining a lifestyle.

Before I make a point:

The Bay Area is not a city. Get it right. Also, I graduated from Cal, and the main reason the College Republicans is the biggest group is because conservatives flock together at Cal due to the “liberal” atmosphere.

To move on, telling someone to get a job is a complete over simplification. I may have missed this point being made, seeing as there have been so many posts, but has no one even considered the past of this country in contributing to the situation? Racism was institutionalized in the South until the 1960’s. Furthermore, while the laws may have changed, the attitudes haven’t. Black people have been oppressed and have not been made welcome in most white, Southern communities. Why would they be inclined to leave somewhere, as rundown as it may be, believing that the system will not help them succeed.

Bottom line: We are all human beings, and we were given compassion as an emotion for a reason. Instead of hiding behind whatever emotions we may feel, good or bad, we should make an attempt to understand them. Maybe by understanding them, we can change our attitudes and become BETTER PEOPLE. Everyone needs to stop excusing these attitudes and justifying them. There are reasons for everything, but that doesn’t make them okay.

Uncle Verne Lundqvist, an EDSBS favorite, yesterday during the USC-ucla basketball telecast called USC’s OJ Mayo, “OJ Simpson”. Then he corrected himself and it was amaizingly funny. (USC, like in football, beat ucla again this year.)

At least Uncle Verne did not say: “I got confused because they all look alike”, like the LSU fans on this video thread might say.

Verne needs to get to SEC football games again, where he is really good, while in b ball he is ok.

I am, by no means, a SEC fan, but it is rather obvious to me that Verne certainly enjoys calling SEC football games much more than any college basketball game.

He won’t ever get Duke-Carolina as that is Nantz/Packer territory, assuming that Nantz is not calling a tournament at the beginning of the Florida swing like Doral, but I digress.

And, to think, Verne is the one that CBS uses in their promo from the ‘86 Masters, as he was the one who called Nicklaus’ birdie on 17.

Today I guess you could say he fits in a bit more in Athens or Gainesville or Knoxville than at the ANGC, but he could return back to golf prominence if he so desired.

And, for anyone that wants to tell me that Verne has had a booth at a hole at Augusta in April in recent years, I will respond that I have not missed a weekend round on the grounds in over 15 years. So, I would not know one way or the other…

Those projects in question, just like much of the 9th ward, were run down and in shambles way before the storms hit. There was no public outcry to change them then but now, 2 years after the storm, somebody wants to do something about them. The timing is perfect too seeing that the 2 year limit is up on the FEMA trailers. People should look toward Cameron parish, which was completely destroyed by Rita and see what they’re doing…they didn’t wait for the government, they go in there themselves and started rebuilding immediately. If the people protesting really want to go back home, they would have done so already. Though these guys said it in blunt term, they were right so y’all can look as this a racist and be blinded to the real issues at hand, or you can wake up, see what the real issue is, and do something about it,

WTF?!?!?

I take a few days of checking in on EDSBS to follow the political frivalties and then run into this lighthearted banter. Sheesh!!!

Some quick observations and facts:

1) I hope everyone is paying attention as Hill and Bill are ginning up the white vote against Barak. FWIW, I don’t think they’re reacists but nothing can be permitted to get in the way of Hill’s coronation.

2) It may not be easy growing up in the projects but I know people who started there who went on to Harvard Med, Harvard Law and the like and are doing plenty well for themselves, somewhat better than our cajun friends in the video I dare say.

3)

a) Anthony Ervin, a black man and fellow Cal alumn won the gold medal in the 50 free in swimming in Sydney in 2000 and held numerous NCAA titles and records.

b) Cullen Jones, who is black is one of the fastest swimmers in the world and one of the USA’s best hopes for sprint Gold in Beijing.

1) Nobody gives two shits, and like the majority on this board, I will be voting for whomever the GOP awards the nomination to. Regardless, I very much prefer Hillary to Obama because the Clintons will take care of the economy, not taxes but the economy, in the manner that I prefer AND, universal health care will pass over my dead body, among many other more influential persons.

2) Give me names. Of course there are people who went to Wharton for undergrad and grad, Johns Hopkins for med school, and received the opportunity to study at Oxford, post-grad, who came from poverty.

My regards to them. Do you know any of these people? Did you hang out with them in college, or did you merely allow them to bus your trays and wash your cafeteria dishes at Cal?

Limousine liberals are the biggest hypocrites known to man.

3) Nobody cares. I have never bought the “black people can’t swim,” that is until I went to football camps in high school and then realized that, black people “choose not to swim.”

I am not going to play the, “white Southerners treat black people, overall, much better than Yankees do” card like others enjoy doing, but last time I checked we all live amongst each other, and I have never feared or avoided dealing with a black man or woman in my life.

Granted, I have not been hanging out on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta around 3AM, either, but the last paragraph is probably more than I can say for all you douchebags spouting, “equality for all,” all the time.

Everyone can argue about what these people meant to say, what they see, etc. but there is no acceptable excuse for racist comments. Stop justifying it, regardless. It’s unnerving.

Furthermore, why do these people even care that much about what the black people in New Orleans are doing now? These people never made an attempt to help them during the devastation, but now have many comments on how those same people choose to deal with that situation, right or wrong. When you’re happy and content with your own life, you don’t have negative things to say about others. Overtly racist comments are often a sign of insecurity and illustrate a person’s need to feel superior based on arbitrary fact because they don’t seeing anything real within themselves that gives them value.

Maybe a little bit of a stretch and over-analysis, but to many degrees, it’s true.

Since were talking politics, just to be perfectly clear, I’ll vote for the Republican provided its not Huck whose inclinations to socialism, appeasement and impressive sleaziness one would be hard pressed to surpass. It’s all about supply side, a realistic foreign policy (read significantly more assertive than W’s in the last year except for in Iraq and, abviously much more effective), and constitutionalist originalist judges. The Hillary/Obama conflict is entertaining though and its worth noting that had any Republican intimated one quarter of what the Clinton campaign has he or she would have enthusiastically crucified by EVERY civil rights group and across 80% of editoiral pages across this country.

Yes, I do know some “of these people”, one of whom I work with quite closely. The other one is universally and justly regarded as one of the most impressive young infectious disease specialist sin New York. Grew up in the Harlem projects, single mom, didn’t know her dad, the works. 1450 on her SATs (early 90s - have no idea what the scores mean these days). No need for affirmative action here, got there entirely on the merits.

Might add that many beneficiaries of affirmative action are black kids who grow up in perfectly comfortable upper middle class circumstances (parents are professionals driving BWMs and such) and in some instances slack of because they know they don’t need to push themselves to get access to the best opportunities.

Nice going Orson! Here we are in the middle of crunch time for football recruiting and you trotted this out. Timing is everything I guess. These assholes don’t represent the university but that doesn’t matter right now. You can be sure the link to that video will find its way to lots of recruits. Well, no matter. Florida usually has a higher rated class of recruits than LSU anyway. Next time you attend a game in Baton Rouge stop by the Law School parking lot. Just holler Rifle. I’ll find you.
