The tallies from the first day of the EDSBS/Fanblogs Charity Drive are in, and the SEC and Big Ten lead the way: Team Donation Standings: 1) Michigan - $1,000 Conference Donation Standings: 1) SEC - $1,315 Today is the final day for donations to count in the positive for your team or conference, so get them in today to one of the three highlighted charities: the American Red Cross, the International Rescue Committee, or CARE. All three are engaged in the very serious business of relief for the tornadoes in Georgia and Oklahoma and typhoon relief in Burma, and all three are quality organizations with excellent ratings in terms of operating efficiency. (Check for yourself at Guidestar.) Tomorrow: Spite Against Blight, where your charitable contributions (reported to kevin@fanblogs.com) count against the team of your choice. Never has athletics-based animosity been turned to such a good end, dear reader. Excellent NFL Minor League; terrible BCS squad. The ACC is a muddled middle of parity, but it at least does the NFL draft well: The NFL draft is what gives the ACC credibility these days. Commissioner John Swofford spoke to the ACC’s coaches Monday and told them that the ACC’s 25 first-round picks the past three years are more than any other conference had over the same period. “If you’re looking for the validation of football and the quality of the conference, that’s a pretty good statement,” North Carolina coach Butch Davis said. “The draft pretty much tells you where the talent is.” Mm-hm. The same conference loaded with NFL talent also finished 12-13 in bowls over the past three years; either it’s a daming indictment of moribund ACC coaching, or NFL scouts hate to travel off the eastern seaboard. Rick Neuheisel explains it all. He, like, owns the freaking Rose Bowl if you listen to him talk about it.
“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air lives across the street.” He had some trouble back in Philly, mind you, so he had to move out to LA to live with his auntie and uncle in Bel-Air with his amusingly articulate cousin Carlton. SMQ highlights something else people neglect in their calculations re: strength of schedule: the bearish slate Georgia faces in the SEC could, when pitted against a slighter undefeated schedule coming out of the Big Ten or Big 12, likely tip the scales in favor of the Bulldogs if/when bowl slots and national poll jockeying begins. USC does it by stacking their out-of-conference schedule and it pays off; Georgia’s doing it, too. If properly executed, you have to be perfect to trump it in the polls, and even then it’s a tough pick between a three-balled one-loss campaign and a nutless but undefeated run. Australia: it’s beer for “country.” |

UCLA did beat the shit out of Alabama twice…one of those times Alabama was ranked 3rd in the country.
I think OU beat Alabama twice in a row right after that UCLA series.
Then Hawaii and Northern Illinois got in on the action.
I guess that is why Alabama’s OOC schedule since then has been Western Carolina, ULM (loss), Duke, Florida International, etc.
F-Alabama.

The Rose Bowl is the Granddaddy of them all…it’s just a shame that the SEC and the BCS has done everything in its power to dissolve the Rose bowl and its tradition.
Instead of getting behind and supporting PROFESSIONAL football in the southeast, you fuckers have done everything you can to turn the SEC and college football into a semi-pro league, complete with a free agency and a playoff.
College football is just about the only sport where teams only play their Rival once a year. In my mind, it should be the most important game of the year and anything that diminishes a Rivalry is not good for college football.
There is no feasible way to settle the matter of declaring a national champion that is fair and equitable for all 118 teams, and that also keep the tradition of Rivalries and academics in tact.

okay…. if you HAVENT had a team blown out in a national title game in the last 2 years, and still find the Rose Bowl relevant, raise your hand…
The fact of the matter is Buckeye fans… that you’re the only ones that are so obtrusively against a playoff because you know, while you sit your perches and besmirch other teams and conferences, and talk of you’re academic and athletic superiority, you’re no longer major players…. Everyone outside of the the dying rust belt sees the same erosion in your football talent that we see in your local economies. The fact that the Big East has won more BCS games since 2005 should be a wakeup call. Yes, you’re playing in the Championship game, but you’re also noncompetitive in said game.
How bad is it for the Big 10? Well, at least when the ACC sucks, they can point out articles that prove their players get drafted and completely turn the attention of this thread back on you…

Hold the phone brother. Michigan is 5-2 against the SEC in their last 7 games and Penn State is 4-2…Wisconsin 3-3….Ohio State is the lone boat anchor in the Big Ten vs. SEC. It should also be noted that said games, the vast majority of them, have been played in the south or in warm climate. Granted BigTen teams are no longer built for 3 yards and a cloud of dust and the snow, but there has to be something said for having the game on home turf or out of the Southeast.
In terms of eroding football talent, you obviously don’t keep up with the NFL or the draft. Ohio State has more NFL draft picks and current players in the NFL than any school not named Miami.
It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that we live in a mobile society now and people relocate all the time, whether it be for work or for climate…the fact that it snows up North and most people don’t want to deal with the snow does not mean that the people of the south are better people, as often implied, it just means you don’t have snow….
Have you ever given any thought to the idea that all of the Midwesterners relocating to the south could have something to do with the progress the south has made in terms of economy? That and foreign auto manufacturers realizing they can establish manufacturing plants in the south and not deal with workers unions, as they do in the north.

You’re making it sound like but for the rust-belt there would be no success in the south and its just not true.

I am not an OSU fan and I do not support a playoff. But yeah, the rose bowl is just another bcs bowl now. Anything more is an illusion of grandeur.
Let me say this, I take no sides in this debate, but SEC, if the tide ever turns, like a midwestern team again beating your undefeated champion and probably that school’s best team of all time 62-24, there will be hell to pay.

tOSU is a fair target for fans of Florida, LSU and any team that has lost fewer than 3 games in the last 2 seasons. Other than that, not so much.
tOSU has a loaded team this year but they have to play USC in LA, where only Stanford seems to have the kryptonite. That is going to be a great game.

The ACC may have good players drafted, but who can name any lately that have made an impact?
Big 10 is good for O/DL lineman and linebackers, one really good 6th round QB from Michigan,
the SEC does pretty good for RBs and inside-outside linebackers/DE speed rush types, and QB’s named Manning-Back to back World Champions in the same family from a championship Conference….. PAC-10 does pretty well for WR’s, QB’s and DB’s….
The question everyone is asking Reggie Bush about the difference between the NFL game vs his USC days, and he said the fact that by goin to the NFL, he had to take a pay cut……..

tAFKAsAnSOB makes a vaild point, many people, when given a choice to spend their college years in mostly cold weather or warm weather, will choose the warmest. I think Miami may have the record for most talent taken in the top 5 rounds there in the early part of this decade, that probaly still start in the NFL as of right now,and that says something for Butch Davis and Larry Coker…..Miami when they were good would be one hell of recruiting trip, especially going to South Beach as a top rated Miami player in the “heyday”
To get Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Hester, Portis, Gore,Shockey, Winslow(he’s a soulja),Mcgahee, Andre Johnson,Vilma,Dorsey in a 5 yrs span much less on the same team…….you had to have naked chicks in the dorms is all I’m sayin

really?? loaded?? REALLY???
Todd Boeckman? Those two 160lb WRs that couldn’t get open? Your **STAR** defensive player couldn’t stop Hester and Holliday… and that team is loaded?? I mean, Chris Wells is a nice running back, but theres about a dozen guys on his level playing bigtime ball…
I mean not to talk up USC, because God knows they don’t need it, but how ridiculous is Joe McKnight going to make that the Buckeyes’ defense look?

One trick ponies? We’ve got 7 National Championship trophies dating back to the 40’s (Ohio State doesn’t count the mythical NC that were awarded 20 years after the fact by some farmer’s almanac)…there is more tradition, national championships, Heisman trophy winners, first round draft picks and all-americans that have come through Ohio State than most of the SEC teams combined - that includes LSU, Florida, Auburn, Tennessee, and Georgia. In 2005, Ohio State had more 1st round draft picks (5) than the entire SEC combined…so don’t tell me about 1 trick ponies.
And yes, how quickly everyone forgets Nebraska dismantling Florida, one of the greatest teams to ever come from the SEC. And when it happens again, yes, there will be hell to pay.
You might be on a little run now, but that is only because you schools have the highest paid coaching salaries in the country and the vast majority of your coaches have zero integrity and push the recruiting violations envelop to the extreme.
