So it's January 21, 2011. You're an EDSBS reader, part of the commentariat. Your head is pounding, you have the cottonmouth, you've Fucked Clemson as hard as you can, and it's time for the off season. How to fill your time until college football envelops us in its sweaty embrace again next fall?
Here's a modest suggestion of things to read/consume. Remember, kids, this is a very literate group. We're smart, snarky, exceedingly well informed, over-educated, and usually drunk. We require you to bring your A-game, all the time. Look back on the Presidents thread- we do not trifle.
Of course, this list is not complete, and suggestions are welcome. I need new things to read, too.
I've divided the suggestions into a couple of different categories: a Western Canon, if you will, for EDSBS. Stuff that gets referred to, either explicitly, or implicitly.
Foundational texts
Bulfinch's Mythology.
Norse Mythology.
the Bible
the Bhagavad-Gita
Beowulf
Blazing Saddles
Airplane
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, by Douglas Adams
The Monty Python films
the Simpsons
Pat Conroy's works
Lewis Grizzard
David Foster Wallace- not just Infinite Jest, but also the other stuff- e.g. Consider the Lobster
Hunter S. Thompson, obvs. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, but also the good doctor's sporting columns for ESPN.
Things I've read recently
I'ma pimp some of the stuff I've liked:
Edmund Morris' Colonel Roosevelt- really, his whole trilogy on TR.
Ok, I got bogged down with work, and with facing the daunting task of compiling all of the stuff what gets referred to on this site. So, I'm open to suggestions on style/format/content/whatever. Here's the start, have at.
