My uncle actually took over his battery after he was killed. My uncle spent a total of one day at Firebase Ripcord before he had to be evacuated. But in that day he earned two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. The first Purple Heart and the Silver Star were from loading wounded troops onto MEDEVAC in the middle of a mortar barrage (shrapnel to the neck). The second Purple Heart is for the mortar round that nearly killed him, and left him with large portions of muscle from both legs missing due to the shrapnel damage.
