You may recall that last year we highlighted the early punting efforts of Miami Redhawk Zac Murphy, hoping that he would shatter the NCAA records for punts in a season (101) which has stood since 1969. Murphy faded down the stretch and only finished with 79 punts on the year, which wasn't even in the top 5. It's possible we were a little too eager, since we projected Murphy's numbers based on two games.
But we have a new champion - Hawaii's Scott Harding. Harding has 41 punts through five games and has punted at least seven times in every Rainbow Warrior contest. That puts him on pace to finish with 106 punts this season, excluding any bowl game ok fine Hawaii's not making a bowl game.
This is what's left of Hawaii's schedule:
Look that over. Now realize that it doesn't matter at all, because Hawaii's offense is terrible. Ranked 121st amongst FBS teams in third down conversions. 126th in yards per passing attempt and 106th in yards per run. You need a team to break records like this, and Hawaii, well, has it.
Let's do this, Norm Chow. For HISTORY.
