ALABAMA IN DISCUSSIONS WITH SHULA OVER EXTENSION

Despite going 4-9 and 6-6 in the last two seasons (which is rightfully blamed on the way Alabama football was left to him), Mike Shula might have a contract extension on the horizon. Currently, Shula is under contract for $900,000 per year until 2009, but the contract calls for a review this season to head off speculation of a lame duck coach during the recruiting wars. It would surprise us if Shula does not get a nice extension as Alabama believes it needs some stability in the program as it emerges from sanctions and tries to get competitive again in the SEC West. Plus, Shula's brand of bland football (were you can get by with defense and only 2 offensive plays that work) is better suited to college than the pros anyway.
