Next week, we'll be driving along I-80 from Illinois to San Francisco. A lot of people on EDSBS seem to have done portions of that drive. (I can recall several long sub-threads about it.)
We want recommendations for places to eat along this route.
- "only the locals know about it"-type places. Often, this is the best road trip food.
- regional chains we may never have heard of, being from the South. An example of how EDSBS has already helped us is that lots of you vouch for Culver's.
The best places are ones that also are
- have healthier options
- good for takeout and eating in the car
We'll be stopping in Omaha, Cheyenne, Salt Lake City, and Reno. So if you have good dinner places there, share those, too.
Well, here's what we did. Mixed bag.
First, I would recommend all these places:
Cheyenne dinner: Shadows Pub and Grill
Salt Lake City dinner: Red Iguana
Reno dinner: Brasserie Saint James
The place in Cheyenne was well below the other two, but it was certainly OK as a food/beer place.
Next, lunch was always fast food. Of those, Culver's in Quad Cities was the best. We discovered a West Coast sub chain for Elko lunch: Port of Subs. Nothing awesome but perfectly acceptable. Doesn't smell like Subway, so that's a plus.
Something else: North Platte, NE, and Elko, NV, are these odd town-oases that attract everyone on the road. They're crowded at lunch time. It's just something you'll have to deal with. Rock Springs, WY, was the best of the three lunch spots West of the Mississippi. For whatever reason, it didn't feel so congested and terrible compared to the other two.
