Trebek's Stupid Playoffs, First Draft

So. Since the playoffs seem inevitable, I figured I'd tell you what my hypothetical please-let-it-happen massive playoff system would look like. THE RULES:

* There are 16 spots. Why 16? Because:

* Every single conference champion automatically qualifies.

* Each of the five top conferences from the previous season gets a second team in.

* The 16th spot goes to an Independent if one ranks in the Top 16 of the computer polls (that use an open-source system; as not enough exist at this time, we'll substitute Massey's College Football Composite, which makes up for transparency with quantity); otherwise, the final spot goes to the top remaining team from the lower five conferences.

* Seeding is done by the computer composite mentioned above.

* If a conference with two bids has divisional play, both division winners get in.

* Two teams from one conference cannot meet in Round 1. That's the only way we cheat from true seeding.

REASONS:

Every team has a chance to make the playoff. This is foremost in my mind. I know it means a huge playoff, but so what -- it's the price we pay.

Round-robin is sacrosanct within conferences. Whilst the conferences themselves don't have a full RR, divisions do. That's why the "division winners" byline is in there.

Independents have a way in. If Notre Dame or BYU earns a Top 16 spot, they will have their chance. I'd include Army, but who's kidding who here? (Navy, as an AAC member, is covered.)

Non-conference scheduling affects seeding. Computers don't care who you are, but they do care who you played. Names are just strings of characters to them, so they'll be able to judge SOS based on results. FSU's win over Notre Dame matters completely, and the SEC West winner will have a huge advantage over, say, the Conference USA champion.

And remember the name: Stupid. I expect there will be flaws with this. (BSP already discussed with me in private what he saw as things he didn't like, particularly the "runners-up get in" clause. After thinking about it, I decided to run with it anyway.)

So, this week's TSP is:

(16) Toledo at (1) Mississippi State
(9) Arizona State at (8) Nebraska
(13) Boise State at (4) Georgia
(12) Duke at (5) Michigan State
(15) Georgia Southern (because the heck with transitions) at (2) Florida State
(10) West Virginia at (7) Notre Dame
(14) East Carolina at (3) Oregon
(11) Marshall at (6) Kansas State

As a reminder, this is for entertainment purposes only and provides a different snapshot from the one the CFP committee will release. Thanks for reading!
