Looking back in time: Fun Facts about Ohio State's 1897 7-loss season

The last time Ohio State had a 7-loss season...

-Facial hair was manly and encouraged, and Every Week was Mustache/Beard/Sideburn Week

-Reconstruction was still an issue in elections...

-...and Grover Cleveland was President

-Idaho was the flagship university of the state, because it was the only university of the state...or should I say, Territory?

-A strapping young coach named Urban Meyer banned his players from reading newspapers or posting telegrams.

-Germany had a Kaiser, Russia had a Czar, Italy had a King and Austria-Hungary was a single nation under the Emperor. All had lineages going back for some centuries

-China still considered itself the Middle Kingdom

-The Ottoman Empire ruled the Middle East

-The United States was an industrial power, Germany had the best army, Britain had the best navy, and Harvard-Yale was the best football game of the season.

-Norway hadn't gained its independence from Sweden yet (not until 1905)

-The Second Boer War hadn't been fought yet

-Men like Fearless Leader were exploring the interior of Africa and hunting the fine predatory animals of the African wilderness, for sport

-Speaking of Africa, there were only 4 independent nations (5 if you count the Ottomans): Ethiopia (Abyssinia), Liberia and the two Boer Republics.

-Horses were the mode of transportation

-THE IVY LEAGUE WAS THE BEST CONFERENCE, PAAWWWLLL

-More than just a handful of football players died...a lot did.

-Cameron Newton had nothing on the fact that players would be bought off at halftime of some games and switch teams.

-The Olympics were barely one year old.

-Oil? Please son, stop your ridiculous dreams and keep shoveling that coal

-Baseball was a'ight

-The United States had only 45 states (with Utah being admitted the year prior) and had possessions called the Philippines, Cuba and Hawaii...oh, and Alaska.

-The Socialists were a major political party (I know, quite spidery)

-Occupy Wall Street had nothing on the labor strikes in those days

-The Sons of the Confederacy...were literally the sons of Confederate veterans
