At long last, New York and Boston gets to settle an overblown regional rivalry through the medium of professional sports. It must be very cathartic to finally get that opportunity.

Did you know that Week 9 against the Giants was the last game that the Patriots lost?

Were you aware that that very game ended with Eli Manning throwing a touchdown pass to Jake Ballard, who wears the same jersey number that David Tyree wore as a Giant? A David Tyree who made a Giant Snatch, which was the Official Bill Simmons These Are My Readers Most Luckiest Leg Sweep In Rocky IV History?

These will be IMPORTANT COINCIDENCES used to create an extra sense of drama for a game that doesn’t really need it, but you’ll be bombarded with them nonetheless. But it’s the Super Bowl. If it weren’t these, it’ve been something about Jack Harbaugh whipping both of his sons with the sticks that correspond to the colors of the teams they now coach.

I'm not sure I understand the motivation for going to the NFL anymore.

College and pro are almost completely different games, and it’s not like good college coaches at major programs don’t make bank. But then again, I hate the NFL, so…

I wonder if it's recruiting.

Some coaches don’t want to spent 12 months of every year enticing people to play for them?

by Attie Hat on Jan 23, 2012 12:19 AM EST up reply actions

I'm sure the challenge of coaching the highest level of players and trying to win a Super Bowl appeals to any competitive coach.

But for every Jim Harbaugh, there’s a Nick Saban or a Bobby Petrino; I don’t know that Kelly (or Jim Tressel, or anyone else who makes the leap) is that likely to succeed. As you said, they’re different games.

Perhaps.

Again, I’m very biased against the NFL, so it doesn’t make sense to me. Were I a coach, it might be different. I just question the fact that it’s the pinnacle of coaching these days.

That's a much different situation. Saban runs basically a pro-style offense and defense.

I’d like to see if NFL defenses could defend the Kelly offense. The knock has always been that in the NFL, defenders are too fast and too disciplined to run an option attack. I think, for a while at least, Chip could have found cracks to exploit.

Don't give up because of the $$$.

Some public universities have sponsored exchanges so that you keep your in-state status by remaining technically enrolled there while studying at the exchange school. And it looks like UM does have some special scholarships for study abroad. IIRC, you’re in a science/engineering program, so you might stand out a bit from another damn pre-law.

(I feel pretty strongly about this one. I managed to scrape together a poor man’s junior year abroad at Glasgow University, and it was — no exaggeration — the most transformative experience of my entire nine years of higher education.)

"

University of Oregon football coach Chip Kelly told a highly placed UO source late Sunday night that he has reversed course and decided to turn down an offer from the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The source told The Register-Guard earlier Sunday night that Kelly had reached an agreement to become Tampa Bay’s head coach. "It’s done," the source said.

Just before midnight, Kelly changed his mind, telling the source: "I’m staying."

Kelly told one assistant coach Sunday night that he had been offered the Tampa Bay job, but Kelly told him he wasn’t certain what he would do."

Today’s commuting fun involved fog and freezing rain. We’ve had very little snow this winter, but quite a few rainy days in the 30s, which, for my money, sucks worse than snow.

They went through three QBs before they got a decent one

And did you really expect Temple to have a top-quality QB in the first place? What he showed me at Temple is that he can adapt. They had a top-10 rushing attack there when he couldn’t rely on the QBs. I know he recruited Kiehl Frazier for Florida when he was there, so he already has a relationship with him. I look forward to seeing what he can do with him. Or with Zeke Pike or whomever they decide Auburn’s starting QB should be, next year.

It was in the press conference.

Said he focused on being DC for the bowl game, then turned to the DC search. After he hired BVG, he started the OC search. Loeffler said it was the most intense interview he’s ever had. I trust Coach Chizik to bring in the man he thinks is the absolute best fit for Auburn, and I think he did it. Loeffler said we’ll be multiple and run whatever it takes to win based on the talent we have and what we’re best at. We’ll be running some things similar to what we’ve done the past three years, but we’ll also take that big All-American FB who transferred from Illinois and be pounding it in a traditional down-hill running offense, too. I think that combined with the hire of BVG as DC will make us a force to be reckoned with.
