The SEC has just won their 6th consecutive BCS title guaranteed

Now that Oregon, Clemson, Oklahoma State, have lost today, the BCS Championship Game will have two SEC teams guaranteed.  (Oklahoma is about to go to overtime as i type)  Oklahoma has lost as well.

New Poll is

1. LSU

2. BAMA

3. ARKY

distant 4. Virginia Tech

5.  Oklahoma State

6. Stanford

Assuming LSU beats Arkansas, then LSU will be in BCS even if it loses to Georgia because they won the west.  They will then face Alabama in BCS because Bama beat Arky head to head.

Assuming Arky beats LSU, who wins the west?  I think it will go to Arky, if it does, then they win the west and go to bcs even if they lose to georgia, and lsu gets in over bama because of head to head.

if it goes to alabama, then bama wins the west and is in bcs even if it loses to georgia, and face arky because arky beats lsu head to head.

if it goes to lsu, then lsu wins west and goes to bcs even if loses to georgia, and face bama because they beat arky heads up.

So, I think it is fair to say, whoever does win the West, goes to BCS even if they lose to Georgia, they shouldn't get penalized for playing the extra game.

And the second team in the BCS is the winner of the head to head match up between those two teams.  I doubt a one loss LSU/Bama/Arky could possibly be lower in the polls than anyone, even if Virginia tech wins the ACC(like that's a prize)

I can't imagine if Oklahoma wins this overtime game vs Baylor could leap them ahead of the SEC triumvirate. Oklahoma has now lost.

I'll take the bait.

I still think the Fightin’ T. Boone’s control their own destiny, at least if LSU beats Arky (thus eliminating the Hogs). Okie Light still enjoys a sizable computer advantage over Bama, which will only increase if the Pokes win Bedlam. If there is ANY sort of voter push toward an anti-rematch/anti-conference runner-up position, the Pokes are in prime position to leapfrog Bama based on the computer rankings.

There’s also the chance that Georgia could win the SEC Championship game, in which case only LSU or Bama (or Arky, in some strange bizarro world like the one we wormholed to today) would get to play for the title, as only two BCS teams can come from the SEC, and Georgia would be one of them.

if only okie state and the big 12 had a championship game

but when the voters sit down, while both bama and okie state lost in overtime, bama’s loss and bama’s wins are better than okie state’s. i think we all think alabama is the second best team in america. however, you are correct, in my mind, conference championships should mean something, and okie state would be one, whether we like it or not. so, i think you might be right, and okie state could stay above bama. i think i stand corrected.

I'm not so sure Bama's wins are better than Okie State's...

In the scenario outlined, with Okie State beating OU and LSU beating Arky, here are the wins, in what I consider descending order:

Bama: Arkansas, Penn State, Auburn, Florida/Vandy
Okie State: Oklahoma, Kansas State, Baylor, Texas/A&M/Mizzou

I’ll give you that the Arkansas win is a better win than OU, and I’m even willing to grant that Penn State is likely a better win than K-State (although that might depend on the last set of games), but after that Okie State’s schedule is miles stronger. Not only do they get an additional conference game, but they’re gonna end up with wins over eight/nine bowl teams (OU, KSU, BU, UT, TA&M, Mizzou, Tulsa, ULL, maybe TT), compared to Bama’s likely six-eight (Arky, PSU, AU, UF, maybe Miss St./Vandy/Tenn/Kent St.). Okie State also didn’t play an FBS team (even a good one, such as Georgia Southern).

Bama’s loss is, of course, much better than Okie State’s loss.

What it comes down to, at least in my mind, is a debate of whether the best teams should play or the most deserving teams should play. I think everyone agrees that LSU and Bama are the two best teams this year, but I think – even with the loss – that Okie State has a legitimate argument to being a more deserving championship game candidate than Bama.

Bama's loss, yes.

Wins, not even close. Florida is Bama’s third best win. The same Florida that got a hell of a fight from Furman today.

Bingo.

Unless Alabama is a unanimous #2 in the polls, OkSt (if they win Bedlam) passes them on the strength of the computers, and pretty easily at that.

Top 2 in BCS overrides conference limit

I also think Oklahoma State is still alive if they beat Oklahoma. However, if the Cowboys lose and Georgia defeats LSU in less than a blowout, the SEC will likely be the first conference to have three teams in the BCS. BCS #1 Alabama (11-1) vs. BCS #2 LSU (12-1) would play for the national title, while Georgia would play in the Sugar Bowl.

Welp.

Color me shamed. And scratch that second hypo off the list.

If you don't win your conference you shouldn't play for the title. Same goes for not winning your division
