Why college football is better
1) Dumb decision to return results in bone-crushing hit and almost a fight afterwards
2) Next play is a flea flicker

Well
When you only play one team of that caliber every 12 games or so, I’d say they could compete with anybody in that respect. Now if they had to run through a Big 12/SEC/ACC schedule and take the beatings that come along with that, I’m not so sure they could play with those guys.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
Point taken
Even so, it’s not like BSU is some kind of surprise at this point. Even if they are facing the big boys only once every 12 games, they win those games.

Navy-Maryland question
With the way Navy moved the ball up and down the field, why did they go for the win instead of OT? Your on the cusp of being treated like a big boy school, you need to act like it.

131 yards in their last six possessions
After the first quarter, MD went INT-Punt-Punt-Punt-Fumble-FG.
Navy punted twice and had seven drives of 59 yards or more.

I was wondering that too.
I also hated the play call. That tight/heavy set just brought more guys into the box.
Could just be because the B back crashed in to block...
… but it really looks like the pitch would have worked on the play. No one on the outside.
"I've made a huge little mistake." - G.O.B.
I think it was a called keeper play to follow the FB in.
I didn’t understand why you wouldn’t just call the full triple option, especially with the safeties diving in.
Might not have been the right play, but 4th and 1 to win vs. going to OT ...
… I’m going for it every single time.
If I think an OT win is 50-50 or less, yes
If I think I can move the ball at will in OT, and I’ve kept the other team out of the end zone the entire half, I would probably kick the FG.

See, I want Boise State to run the table
Because nothing will lead to the demise of the BCS faster. Either 1) they’ll get shut out again and Congress will start raising hell about it again (which keeps them occupied and unable to screw up in other ways … hope that’s sufficiently apolitical), or 2) they’ll get to the title game and everyone else will start raising hell about it.
This strikes me as a strategy Neville Chamberlain would love
"I've made a huge little mistake." - G.O.B.
the most diplomatic way I can put it is:
Given how bad the BCS is, what makes you think whatever alternative they may implement will be any better?
That goes double if congress actually intervenes.
Mostly, I can’t think of any worse way to do it that isn’t so perversely awful that nobody even in their wrong mind would come up with it. Then again, I thought the Big Ten would do the obvious thing with their divisions (E-W split) instead of what Off Tackle Empire (the Big Ten conference blog on SBN) succinctly referred to as “Hodgepodge of Ass”. So maybe my cynicism isn’t fully developed enough yet.

Now we have to listen to a whole season of this disgusting bullshit from the media. Every moderately decent team BSU plays just shoots themselves in the foot with no provocation, and they get to act like they did something important. A whole fucking season of every smartass sports writer and TV robot regurgitating the lie that BSU is in any way relevant to the national title game.
This may be what the BCS wants:
1) Boise State runs the table.
2) At most one BCS-conference champion is undefeated (even better, only one has fewer than two losses).
3) Boise State gets into championship game.
4) Championship game is competitive and entertaining.
5) Voila! Proof that the BCS can arrange the right title matchup, and give a fair shot to the have-not conferences when they deserve it, and needs no fixing!
Meanwhile, afterwards at BCS headquarters:

"...when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to."

In fairness
that might make the WAC more competitive at this point.
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
Not quite.
I’m sympathetic to Boise and was pleased to see them win this one. But I also don’t see how the Broncos have proved their critics wrong. Just about everyone takes it for granted now that BSU can beat a top-ranked team at least twice a year.
But twice a year won’t cut it if you’re staking a claim to being one of the top two—or hell, even top five—teams in the land. Especially when you factor in the unfairness of having so many more virtual bye weeks than the top-ranked teams you beat.
Yes, there’s no easy way for them to ever satisfy their critics…but that doesn’t mean that the criticism doesn’t have a good basis all the same.
(Oh, and this game pretty much sucked all around in any event. Just like the big famous win over Oregon last year.)
by Blog Goliard on Sep 6, 2010 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions
It's not really about proving critics wrong
It’s that people complain that Boise State isn’t reaching their unattainable standard. Boise State is going to play WAC teams because they’re in the WAC. I don’t understand the point in directing vitriol towards Boise State over something they can’t control.
by okie for michigan on Sep 7, 2010 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

by okie for michigan on Sep 7, 2010 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions
I, for one, don't have a problem with Boise
being considered a top 15 team for their exploits. In fact, I think that’s fair. I have a hard time believing they are the equals of Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, or Texas though. When that is what ESPN is trying to push, then there is going to be some blowback for all the reasons stated here… like the schedule.
If Boise had to play an ACC schedule, playing Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina, along with another top non-conference opponent like Florida or Georgia or LSU, would they still be undefeated? I don’t think so. I think their depth would catch up to them, and they wouldn’t have several weeks to prepare for each big time opponent. I think they could be a 9 win team in the ACC or so… about the equivalent of VaTech. That should slot them around 15-20. I have no problem with that. Putting them among those aforementioned teams is just not warranted.

So
non BCS teams should never be ranked above 15-20. no matter what.
what’s the point in those teams even playing football then?

why anybody who played or plays in college does it
It’s fun and we’re (are or were) good at it, sometimes better at that one thing than anything else we do.

Because if you play like them, you'll earn respect.
That makes you mad? Your BCS conference school can’t get to a BCS bowl and Boise can? Sit in the corner and cry.

As a Georgia alum...
I have fond memories of 1) playing Boise and 2) playing a WAC team in a BCS bowl. That is all.
The dude abides.
Of course...
…if you put them in a BCS conference and they start out winning 10-11 games a year, they’re going to start getting even more recruits, and then they actually will be a threat to run the table.
Which, of course, is an end result that BSU would fall all over themselves to latch onto, were it ever to happen.
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
You are right.
Boise State is not the equal of the schools that you mentioned. Not just in perception, tradition (whatever that is defined as), money, facilities, recruiting, etc. So the problem has been stated, what are realistic and practical solutions?

This.
I understand the problem. Believe me, I do. There’s just no point in getting so upset and mad over something that isn’t anyone’s fault but the BCS – and taking out your bitterness on Boise State, who only do what they’re asked to do.

I agree with you
I am not against the points that you have brought up.

Move into the MWC
Make that an automatic qualifying conference, and play and beat big boys regularly. You are almost there. I just don’t think you’re there yet. Be satisfied with the BCS bid until the conference develops sufficient legitimacy to warrant a spot in the title game.
The dude abides.
wasn't aware you can just move into the MWC

but apparently it isn’t enough?

I dunno
On the basis of their performance so far this season they may be the equal of Florida or Texas. Both of them played like crap, but against incompetent competition.
It’s likely it won’t turn out that way over the whole season, of course. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t wait and see how it turns out.
SCREAM RAGE MESSAGE BOARD VITRIOL is more fun, of course.
I agree with the
SCREAM RAGE MESSAGE BOARD VITRIOL. It is fun to make people react.

Boise St has more BCS wins than the entire ACC
(not counting wins by current ACC schools when they were in other conferences)
Also, the ACC’s only BCS game victory was over Cincinnati.
I'm not immune to Boise's situation, I went to Arizona State.
The Devils beat the tar out of the WAC for the better part of two decades and got no respect for doing so. ASU founded the Fiesta Bowl to attract top flight competition, beating them more often than not. After five consecutive conference titles, an undefeated season, and still no votes for the NC as the only undefeated, we packed our bags for the Pac-10. The next time we went undefeated we went to the Rose Bowl and would have snagged the ’96 title had we been able to cover David Boston.
If Boise wants my respect they need to figure out how to get a big boy schedule. ASU actually tried to schedule them this year after Alabama bought out our contract with San Jose State but Boise wanted a $1,000,000 payout to give us a 6th home game without a return trip. So don’t come over here crying about not being able to play a better schedule.
You really think...
they don’t struggle finding 4 top ranked teams to play OOC?
They play one team, you say play more.
They play two teams, you say play more.
They play three teams, you say play more.
They play four teams, you say join a BCS conference.
You’ve seen their performances. You know they can play with who they’ve beat. So they’re not Bama or Ohio State? So what? Do you know how many BCS conference schools aren’t?
by okie for michigan on Sep 7, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions
Now we're just agreeing.
that is exactly what I’m saying. Boise has the peculiar situation the ASU WAC teams had- they’re good enough that a lot of top level teams won’t play them for fear of losing. Join a conference, play 8-10 BCS schools per year, and see where you sit. At A-State we have a hard enough time getting national respect as a Pac-10 team so we’ve been scheduling home-and-home series with the likes of LSU, UGA, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and Notre Dame ON TOP OF our 9 yearly Pac games.
Boise is in a tough spot but this is the hand they’ve been dealt. Again, if you want to be treated like a BCS team you need to join a BCS conference. I have empathy but not sympathy.
If Ohio Sate goes undefeated, they will play in the BCS national chamionship
and they will not have played more than two top ranked teams. Texas as well, in fact, they’ll be lucky to play two ranked teams before the Big 12 championship.

Florida and Bama only can by playing each other twice, most likely.
It’s a standard that nobody but outsiders is held to. Nobody got their panties in a bunch about USC playing one good OOC game and then a WAC-level Pac-10 in the mid-00s.
that's a tad revisionist
UCLA, Washingon, Wazzu occasionally, Cal, and Oregon were all on-again off-again teams that could challenge USC

Wat?
Miami
Iowa
Wisky
Penn State
All ranked.
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
top ranked? should have made that more clear- top 10 teams
Iowa, Wisky, maybe (just maybe) penn state

Who the fuck...
is going to play 4 top 10 teams?
It doesn’t matter how many football games the SEC wins. We will always look down on you.
That was due to how the Big XII schedule broke down
Everyone was undefeated because they played all their non-conference games the first four weeks of the season. They didn’t play each other until late October.
The dude abides.
The early part of the conference schedule itself
was favorable, too. All the “good” teams caught the bottom half of the conference early.
I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.
Counting the SECCG
Alabama did it last year.

The FINAL
At the time Va Tech was #7 and LSU was #9. The reason that they fell out of the top 10 was because Bama beat them…

There will always be way overrated SEC teams at the beginning of the year.

No...
Then you’re actually punishing a team’s strength of schedule because they won the game. That doesn’t make any sense.

But you can't go by earlier rankings...
LSU being a prime example.
