Well

When you only play one team of that caliber every 12 games or so, I’d say they could compete with anybody in that respect. Now if they had to run through a Big 12/SEC/ACC schedule and take the beatings that come along with that, I’m not so sure they could play with those guys.

I prefer the Max Bretosian, “YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS” like he does for soccer goals.

If the ball goes just wide or short, he can hilariously cut short to a “no” at the end.

But I’m silly.

See, I want Boise State to run the table

Because nothing will lead to the demise of the BCS faster. Either 1) they’ll get shut out again and Congress will start raising hell about it again (which keeps them occupied and unable to screw up in other ways … hope that’s sufficiently apolitical), or 2) they’ll get to the title game and everyone else will start raising hell about it.

by SpartanDan on Sep 6, 2010 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

the most diplomatic way I can put it is:

Given how bad the BCS is, what makes you think whatever alternative they may implement will be any better?

That goes double if congress actually intervenes.

Mostly, I can’t think of any worse way to do it that isn’t so perversely awful that nobody even in their wrong mind would come up with it. Then again, I thought the Big Ten would do the obvious thing with their divisions (E-W split) instead of what Off Tackle Empire (the Big Ten conference blog on SBN) succinctly referred to as “Hodgepodge of Ass”. So maybe my cynicism isn’t fully developed enough yet.

Those of us from North Idaho resent the potato business. No potatoes in North Idaho, yet the folks down in Boise think nothing of making everyone run around with license plates that advertise ’em for them. Grrrrr.

Living in Boise helps...

Is it sad that my favorite thing about her right now is that she comes closer than anyone else on national TV to pronouncing “Boise” properly?

(General guidance: The less you sound like you could possibly be from New Jersey, the more likely you’re getting it right. Rendering the second syllable as “zee” rather than “see” always makes an Easterner stand out.)

No, there really isn't humidity in Idaho

I know it’s a reasonably temperate evening in D.C. And I know that they’ve hammered away at the humidity angle like the relentless WWL-bots they all are anymore.

But dammit, it is a shock to the system to come from Boise to the East Coast. Even 50% is awfully stuffy when you’re used to 15-25% in the heat of the day back home. Believe me on this.

If anything, it will reinforce the idea of “hey, you don’t have to be one of the 6 major conferences to win a national title! Look, BSU did it!”

See the post below, but I absolutely believe that BCS supporters would take the hit of letting a mid-major win it once in order to continue operating. “There’s no imbalance here,” they’d plausibly say. “Look at BSU.”

by jonfmorse on Sep 6, 2010 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Not quite.

I’m sympathetic to Boise and was pleased to see them win this one. But I also don’t see how the Broncos have proved their critics wrong. Just about everyone takes it for granted now that BSU can beat a top-ranked team at least twice a year.

But twice a year won’t cut it if you’re staking a claim to being one of the top two—or hell, even top five—teams in the land. Especially when you factor in the unfairness of having so many more virtual bye weeks than the top-ranked teams you beat.

Yes, there’s no easy way for them to ever satisfy their critics…but that doesn’t mean that the criticism doesn’t have a good basis all the same.

(Oh, and this game pretty much sucked all around in any event. Just like the big famous win over Oregon last year.)

by Blog Goliard on Sep 6, 2010 11:57 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not really about proving critics wrong

It’s that people complain that Boise State isn’t reaching their unattainable standard. Boise State is going to play WAC teams because they’re in the WAC. I don’t understand the point in directing vitriol towards Boise State over something they can’t control.

by okie for michigan on Sep 7, 2010 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I, for one, don't have a problem with Boise

being considered a top 15 team for their exploits. In fact, I think that’s fair. I have a hard time believing they are the equals of Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, or Texas though. When that is what ESPN is trying to push, then there is going to be some blowback for all the reasons stated here… like the schedule.

If Boise had to play an ACC schedule, playing Miami, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and North Carolina, along with another top non-conference opponent like Florida or Georgia or LSU, would they still be undefeated? I don’t think so. I think their depth would catch up to them, and they wouldn’t have several weeks to prepare for each big time opponent. I think they could be a 9 win team in the ACC or so… about the equivalent of VaTech. That should slot them around 15-20. I have no problem with that. Putting them among those aforementioned teams is just not warranted.

Also, the ACC’s only BCS game victory was over Cincinnati.

by elefantstn on Sep 7, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not immune to Boise's situation, I went to Arizona State.

The Devils beat the tar out of the WAC for the better part of two decades and got no respect for doing so. ASU founded the Fiesta Bowl to attract top flight competition, beating them more often than not. After five consecutive conference titles, an undefeated season, and still no votes for the NC as the only undefeated, we packed our bags for the Pac-10. The next time we went undefeated we went to the Rose Bowl and would have snagged the ’96 title had we been able to cover David Boston.

If Boise wants my respect they need to figure out how to get a big boy schedule. ASU actually tried to schedule them this year after Alabama bought out our contract with San Jose State but Boise wanted a $1,000,000 payout to give us a 6th home game without a return trip. So don’t come over here crying about not being able to play a better schedule.

You really think...

they don’t struggle finding 4 top ranked teams to play OOC?

They play one team, you say play more.
They play two teams, you say play more.
They play three teams, you say play more.
They play four teams, you say join a BCS conference.

You’ve seen their performances. You know they can play with who they’ve beat. So they’re not Bama or Ohio State? So what? Do you know how many BCS conference schools aren’t?

by okie for michigan on Sep 7, 2010 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Now we're just agreeing.

that is exactly what I’m saying. Boise has the peculiar situation the ASU WAC teams had- they’re good enough that a lot of top level teams won’t play them for fear of losing. Join a conference, play 8-10 BCS schools per year, and see where you sit. At A-State we have a hard enough time getting national respect as a Pac-10 team so we’ve been scheduling home-and-home series with the likes of LSU, UGA, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and Notre Dame ON TOP OF our 9 yearly Pac games.

Boise is in a tough spot but this is the hand they’ve been dealt. Again, if you want to be treated like a BCS team you need to join a BCS conference. I have empathy but not sympathy.

That was due to how the Big XII schedule broke down

Everyone was undefeated because they played all their non-conference games the first four weeks of the season. They didn’t play each other until late October.

The dude abides.

The early part of the conference schedule itself

was favorable, too. All the “good” teams caught the bottom half of the conference early.

I am now channeling Will McDonald's optimism.

Yeah...

It doesn’t happen every year.

Alabama did it last year.

But who were those 10 games played against?

This is where strength of schedule gets to be ridiculous.

The FINAL

At the time Va Tech was #7 and LSU was #9. The reason that they fell out of the top 10 was because Bama beat them…

You can only go by the final...

There will always be way overrated SEC teams at the beginning of the year.

Otherwise it’s just free Top 10 victories to whoever ends up drawing UGA early on.

No...

Then you’re actually punishing a team’s strength of schedule because they won the game. That doesn’t make any sense.

But you can't go by earlier rankings...

LSU being a prime example.

That team was dog shit.
