OPEN THREAD: OPENING NIGHT WITH STEVEN AND MATTHEW

Opening night thread, commenced. A few necessary things must be mentioned. You need a Rootability Index, since it contains Dave Wannstedt Camaro jokes and the info you need to decide who to root for tonight. You need the Starter Wife showing you to make Bacon Bourbon Popcorn because THAT'S JUST HOW PEOPLE FROM PITTSBURGH FRICKIN' ROLL. You need to know we plan on liveblogging at least one game this weekend, but this is a holiday, and we too will be celebrating and commenting below with the rest of you before we decide which ones.
You need to raise a glass, motherfuckers, and enjoy the carnival since we hereby declare it open for business.

The convo started off about how ridiculous pre-season polls are
And then Craig said that based on sakerlina’s offense and Garcia in this game they should be given top 25 consideration. Rece basically said “No offense, but this is Southern Miss”.
That would be like saying UGA deserves to be ranked top 10 in the country when we beat our cupcake on Saturday like a drum like we’re supposed to.

Good point.
Though I guess I should point out that Miss. St. didn’t actually lose to a I-AA team last year… can’t remember when it was they lost to Maine, but it was still pretty bad.

He's definitely warranted some PT. Kid's looked good tonight.
As far as our D, there’s really no way to know until they get in a game situation Saturday. By all accounts, 80-90% of the playbook is installed. I still think we’re a little thin at the LB positions for the scheme and it’ll take a couple years of recruiting to catch up. All I know is if Grantham coaches half as well as he talks the scheme, we’ll be decent on D this year. I think there will be more turnovers, but they’ll also get burned on a few big plays.

Oh, yeah, they'll be remembering last year's Georgia game...
… because all of the Georgia/Carolina games of the previous 20 years weren’t basically exactly the same.
Yeah, they’ll be remembering last year’s game.
That said, they’re still going to whip our ass.
Do you really think so?
I would take a 3-2 win, as long as we come out on top.
If I were a neutral, I think I could see picking Carolina to win (17 returning starters, HFA, first road and SEC start for FR QB, new D scheme), but all the "Oh noooo!’ results against Georgia over the last 10 years have sapped my optimism from any South Carolina-Georgia matchup.
Are you (and TKK, and everyone else) really pessimistic about the outcome, or are you just trying to rein in your own expectations?
by GwinnettGamecock on Sep 2, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I think we're all just tempering expectations
We all got way too excited about ‘08 and learned our lesson. Eternally pessimistic means you’re either proven right or pleasantly surprised.
http://hobnailboot.wordpress.com/
A little of both.
After the 2008 debacle, my pessimistic football nature has been confirmed. (Though, to be fair, since I was raised in the era of Dooley and Munson, I come about it honestly.)
If you always expect the worst, your only two options are to be proven correct or to be pleasantly surprised.
With that said, though, SCAR has more returning starters, more returning coaches, and 1 very important returning QB. I don’t think it’s overly pessimistic to think that they’ll be clicking and we’ll be still experiencing growing pains.

The closest parallel I can come up with to this
MSU-Indiana one year during the JLS era. We gave up an early safety and led 7-2, then went for two twice in a row to make it 23-2. (Indiana then pulled the old “score a TD then let the other team block the PAT and run it back” trick, resulting in by far the weirdest halftime score I’ve ever seen: 25-8.)
That just fucking manly
