Pick This Year's Appy State

We all know the story: Appalachian State 34, Michigan 32. First win by a FCS program over a ranked BCS team, yada yada yada. Can it happen again? That was rhetorical; in an infinite universe not only CAN it happen again, it MUST come to pass over and over and over again (this is a theory embraced by conference doormats, who hope only to live long enough to witness the inevitable Vandy-Duke title game.) Will it happen THIS year? Probably not, but if it does the pant-shitting will likely occur in the first week, as seven ranked squads will be snacking on yummy, yummy FCS cupcakes.

So the question I pose to my fellow fans of forecasting fail, which of the following matchups is the most likely to be "Appalachian'd?"

Florida A&M @ #13 Miami

Youngstown State @ #4 Penn State

Samford @ #20 Florida State

Eastern Illinois @ #9 Iowa

South Carolina State @ #16 Georgia Tech

Coastal Carolina @ #25 West Virginia

Tennessee Tech @ #17 Arkansas

Actually PREDICTING an upset grants you eternal boasting rights here at EDSBS, as well as years of hate mail and burning bags of dog crap from otherwise civilized alums (note: does not, obviously, apply to fervent Miami fans, as even in an infinite universe some things do NOT exist.)

FanPosts are user-submitted, and thus NOT representative of EDSBS editorial or any of our opinions unless posted by us ourselves. Please refrain from posting blatant spam or self-promotion, because this makes us hate you. Thanks!

None of the above

PSU or Iowa are the closest. PSU is going to be starting a sieve at QB, but their running game and D should easily overpower Ytown. Iowa is a team full of 2* talent coached better than anyone else in the nation, ergo they can always get a stiff challenge from a lower division foe (see N.Iowa last year).

A sifter at QB?

I can see that analogy working for the offensive line, but for a QB? I’m not expecting Heisman level numbers (LOLZ), but choosing between a 4* from Michigan and a 4* from Virginia should keep us in at least the Youngstown State game.

Youngstown State has been scrambling in the offseason to find their QB starter as well.

Yeah, Iowa

because everyone knows coaching is irrelevant in college football. Just assemble a group of highly rated high school students—because by age 17 we can see clearly what you will amount to as a football player—and toss them out on the field and the rest takes care of itself.

Im going outside week 1 and going with what would be the greatest upset in college football history

Georgia St over Alabama.

Hmmm….is that bigger than C6H0?

I don't even want to consider what would happen

if that event occurred.

I imagine a black hole would form in the depth of Saban’s heart and swallow the world. Clearly, those would be the end times.

Curry has beaten #1 Alabama with bad teams before

1981, GT started the season beating #1 Bama (it was Bama’s 2nd game). GT finished 1-10.

Bama was No. 2

Notre Dame was No. 1 when Curry’s 1-9-1 1980 team tied them. So if history is any indicator (and it isn’t), Bill has a couple major upsets in store for his first two years.

Gah, that would probably mean they’re going to lose to Shorter tonight, and I’m going to that game, so never mind.

Tied?

We beat Notre Dame 3-3 in 1980.

Ive seen the headline.

Doesn’t have to be week 1. The Gophers will never be ranked this year, so I couldn’t pick them, and the Jacks are a respectable 1AA team. Don’t go all devidee on me.

Sagarin rates Georgia State No. 243 out of 245

So, yeah, that would definitely be a bigger upset than App. State over Michigan. Probably would do something really bad to the space-time continuum.

Trap Games

First of all, none of these upsets are going to happen. That said, Penn State has to at least be looking ahead just a smidge to #1 Bama’s visit the following week. Ditto for Miami and their #2 Buckeye guests in week 2.

The sweetest upset, at least for one man, would be FSU going down to Samford. Seeing his alma mater slay the school that (in his mind) pushed him out too soon would have to give ol’ Bobby some level of pleasure.

That will be my excuse if PSU loses to Alabama

PSU was caught looking ahead to the game against Kent State the following week.

The answer is Richmond over Virginia

but since you’re going with ranked teams, there’s a chance that “also receiving votes” Temple will lose this weekend to Villanova.

otherwise, none of these I-AA teams can hold a candle to Appy State, which is the most important factor in picking FCS upsets.

Also, Penn State is #4? News to me.

I dont think Richmond pulls it off

London knows his former team to well.

Villanova beat Temple last year, no reason they couldnt do it again. While Villanova is equivalent to App St, Temple is no Michigan.

Teams in top 120, preseason sagarin

Colonial – 7 out of 10
MAC – 9 out of 13
Sun belt – 4 out of 9

SoCon is 2 out of 9 (App St and Elon) if anyone cares.

Name one bad-loss upset of a Paul Johnson-coached team, in the past 13 years

I’ll wait. Tech will win that game by three TDs, if the defense is as mediocre as I expect it to be, unless Nesbitt gets hurt. Then they win by 10 points.

by Golden Hand on Sep 2, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Furman in 2000?

They werent a bad team, they made the playoffs, probably because they beat GSU. Bad. But, Johnson won the title that year, so shouldnt have lost that game.
