It’s time that the University of Michigan cuts its ties with coach Rich Rodriguez

Tuesday was one of the lowest days in Michigan football history as the NCAA delivered its notice of allegations against the program.

The NCAA listed five violations against the Wolverine football program under Rodriguez.

Michigan has played football for more than 100 years and has never had a major violation against its program.

Agreed...

and the Les Miles talk below confuses me. After his national championship, sure. But as of now, the luster has really come off his shine. He looks more inept by the game, and takes more foolish chances than anyone in memory.

But Rich Rod should have stayed in West Virginia. He had that system rolling down there, and no one was gonna mess with him in state.

Not to make this about Miles, but...

… if you’re saying this that Miles “takes more foolish chances”, particularly given how friggin’ conservative his gameplans were last season, you obviously don’t watch much LSU football. Miles had his problems last year (terrible clock management springs to mind), but taking crazy chances was certainly not one of them.

OK...

how about change it from “foolish chances” to “foolish decisions”. That takes into account both stupid 4th down attempts AND bad clock management. Either way, if I was in the market for a coach he would be nowhere near the top of my list, especially with someone like Harbaugh as a “Michigan man”.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 25, 2010 5:09 PM EST up reply actions

Foolish 4th downs?

LSU ranked LAST in the SEC in 4th down attempts. Both Tennessee and Mississippi State had twice as many.

The Riverboat Gambler reputation in no way resembles reality. Most of Miles’ problems have stemmed from being too conservative, not too risky. Which would make him fit right in at Michigan.

The amount is not at issue...

it’s more a time and place subject as for the “foolishness” of the 4th down call.

by Mr. Sanchez on Feb 25, 2010 5:33 PM EST up reply actions

There are plenty of reason to criticize Miles

but taking stupid chances on fourth down is not one of them. Seriously dude, do you even watch LSU football?

Not going on 4th is often...

a foolish decision. So Miles doesnt get out of it that way either.

There really wasn't a non-alumnus coach better matched to his school..

…than Rich Rodriguez at West Virginia.

You may interpret that any way you like.

That 17-year-old Hokie sitting in the rafters in Greensboro didn't see any of this coming.

Sorry Josh, you are mistaken

Rodriguez is a WVU alumnus. He played DB for Don Nehlen from 1982 to 1984.

You may have heard of the Detroit Free Press,

who were the ones investigating these violations practically before the NCAA was, and who really seem to have it in for RichRod.

They definitely have the pitchforks out for RR.

by blanx73 on Feb 25, 2010 3:29 PM EST up reply actions

No major FOOTBALL violations,

not to be confused with their basketball violations. Ed Martin made sure that the Fab Five was well compensated, especially Chris Webber. RichRod isn’t long for AA. After this year, where they will be doing well to go 6-6, and receive a thrashing in Columbus, there will be a change. Vacating wins (only 8), or bowl eligibility (none so far and none on the horizon), leaves only scholarship reductions. The rebuild in front of Harbaugh to return UM to the mediocrity of Lloyd Carr may take longer than it took RichRod to screw it up.

How did you find the Dowagiac News?

A small-town paper so small that even I, living 10 miles away in Kalamazoo, did not know it existed.

I’m not even mad, I’m impressed.

I root for the Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings and yes, the Lions.

Thank you for rebutting yourself, Dowagiac
Now we are unclear as to whether or not these are considered major violations, but regardless, in less than a year Rodriguez has brought shame to the program.

All the good parts of our fight song were taken.

dowagiac?

I understand there is a war between UM/Mgoblog and the free press, but the dowagiac daily news??? this comment will be read by more people than the dowagiac newspaper on a typical day.

besides, that editorial is coming from a small town newspaper in Notre Dame country. it could very well be some elaborate brian kelly sockpuppetry concern trolling (not really, but that would be hilarious, no?)

This is what's charming about the smaller-market papers.

They can go freewheeling and screamy where the larger outfits have to at least feign restraint.

except for the Freep ...

where eventually a headline will read LACK OF INSTITUTIONAL CONTROL AT U-M LEADING TO DEATH OF BABIES.

And somewhere underneath yesterday’s baseball scores, there will be a very small item: “East Lansing – Dantonio scheduling spring practice in Jackson to accommodate new recruits.”

in other words...

smaller no market newspapers are the comments section of yesteryear!

Mr. Chinese Secret, I would move the operations to Benton Harbor/St. Joe – there is an element of crazy there that would provide cover for anything coming from it.

Damn.

We’ve been found out. Time to move this operation to the Niles/Buchanan Census-Designated Area.

I also don’t think that people understand the degree and scope of the attacks on Rich Rod from the Freep. Drew Sharp, a notorious U-M hater, in addition to “writing” for the Freep, also hosts an afternoon drive sports radio show. There is a bizarre echo chamber in the local media.

by blanx73 on Feb 25, 2010 3:32 PM EST reply actions

the michigan media is stupid

and no one whose opinion matters is calling for rodriguez to be fired.

but another underwhelming season and they’ll be looking for ways to show him the door.

In Dick-Rod's defense

At Alabama I doubt you’d have had students or newspapers attempting to doom him to failure. Players at school’s other than Michigan never complain about “working out too long” or “the voluntary stuff was mandatory”. Read into that what you will but if Michigan players/parents think they were outworking other schools they’re crazy.

Granted Dick would have probably have needed to get some sort of a handle on paperwork. Given Bama’s previous compliance issues I’m sure they’ve got a guy for that.

Yeah BoYeeEEeeE

Agreed that they are being little whiny bitches.

That said, I am pretty damned happy with the coach we got instead of RR.
