Around SBN: Keith Hernandez Reacts To Gary Carter's Passing

IN DEFENSE OF SPORTS SLUTS

Our piece on the joys of being a promiscuous sports libertine in the season of the Winter Olympics is up over at SBN, complete with footage of the greatest downhill run not ending in a German guy doing cartwheels at 80 mph over boulders: Franz Klammer's gold medal run at the '76 games in Innsbruck.

you can always tell that franz klammer is coming your way...

because you can hear his giant brass balls banging together when he walks.

Amen to that.

The guy won four times at the Hahnenkamm at Kitzbühel. That’s like beating Ivan Drago four times.

Great piece, Orson

Might there be a Klammer Spicy Living segment headed our way? Could there be? I want to believe that guy was an Alberto Tomba-style swordsman off the slopes in addition to a complete badass on skis.

Hallucinogenic love drugs, sir. The pagans were taking them. We were trying to fit in.

The Winter Olympics...

… are the Dim Sum bar you only remember to visit once every four years.

It takes a lot longer than your average meal, but you’ll be damned if you aren’t going to sample every item on the buffet.

Love the Olympics so much that we have a bi-annual Olympic theme party, complete with costumes, events, and medal ceremonies. Of course, this year we can’t have it on the traditional middle Saturday, since we’ll be at the olympics in Vancouver, taking in curling, speedskating, and luge.

The Winter Olympics are not quite their Summer brethren, because there is no soccer — but Olympic-rules ice hockey suffices nicely, and so does every manner of downhill.

I understand the Olympic haters who get on figure skating and gymnastics, etc. But there’s too much weird yet good stuff to be enthralled by that gets broadcast at the dead of night. Now, the only thing bungling it is NBC’s insistence on tape delaying EVERYTHING.

I remember seeing that Klammer run when it was first broadcast. He became my go-to mental image whenever I went skiing and took on a slope beyond my abilities. I think he got me down alive a few times. Thanks for dredging up some good memories.

I remember watching Wide World of Sports...

and I loved it. And you’re right, the college football season is way to short for us to be faithful all year long. I’ll definitely be watching the olympics just like the rest of ya’ll. Glad I’m not the only slut in the room.

Watching that run by Klammer gave me chills even when I knew he would win gold. Amazing.
