What part of Orlando to stay in?
Hey guys, I'm going to be stepping into the flat wastelands of central Florida for the first time later this month for the Champs Sports Bowl (NC State vs West Virginia... feel the mediocrity!) and I was hoping y'all expert drunks at EDSBS could give me some tips on where to stay in that area.
I figure we will be drinking and parking at the Citrus Bowl Stadium for tailgating purposes, so within super close distance of stadium isn't needed but we don't want to be driving all the way across down either.
What part of Orlando should I look to book at hotel room in that would be within walking distance to quality bars or other hijinks without being super expensive?
Thanks for any tips.

I went to the Citrus Bowl when it was Purdue-Maryland
And we drove up from Ft. Myers on the day of the game without much trouble. That said, I’d go for something on the north side of town. Florida cities aren’t built for “walking distance,” so don’t kill yourself looking for something with a big bar scene. The Citrus Bowl is in a bad neighborhood, so don’t try to get something next to the stadium.
Look for something on the north side of town, that way you can take I-4 directly south to the stadium and are on the opposite side of town from Mouseland.
I'd say this is pretty solid advice...
The big nightlife spot is Church St. Station, which is downtown near I-4 to the intersection of Church St. and Orange Ave.
From the stadium it is a relatively quick little drive.
Also avoid Orange Blossom Trail. I would suggest looking for a hotel on Colonial Dr. anywhere from downtown east to Semoran Blvd. and/or to the north….it all depends on how far you want to drive going and coming.
Have fun!
But, but, OBT

My new blog: Those Other Guys. Critiques welcome.
Look into Altamonte Springs (North side of downtown).
Plenty of decent hotels right off of I-4 and it’s only about a 10-15 minute drive from downtown and the Citrus Bowl.

I asked Orson about this the first time I went to Orlando.
He told me the best place to stay in Orlando is Tampa. I should have listened.
Get a hotel in downtown Orlando. You’ll be fairly close to Church Street and the stadium. There are about elevety billion hotels and chain restaurants on International Drive, which is farther south near the attractions, but these are focused more towards the hordes of zombie tourists and their parents.
Also, watch the weather – I’ve been in Orlando in December before, and it was in the 40s every day.
Orlando ain't a walking town
Unless you’re a transient or one of the aforementioned OBT trolls.
Quality bars are few and far, far, far between. That said, some can be found downtown on or around Orange Avenue. There are few decent hotels in the area; exceptions are the Grand Bohemian and to a lesser extent the downtown Sheraton. The good news is that all hotels here have shuttles to downtown and, of course, Disney. Also, the public bus system (Lynx) is not entirely nightmarish downtown.
Under no circumstances should you venture about in the area around the Citrus Bowl; this can not be stressed enough. Even if you’re in the market for crack, there are safer places to purchase it.

I recommend staying downtown
For the aforementioned bar scene, and it’s the only area that is good for walking around. Do not walk to the Citrus Bowl. Plus there’s a free shuttle to the Citrus Bowl if you get too drunk and decide not to tailgate:
