The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents.
We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have thus far harmed us little; but some day, the piecing together of dissociated knowlege will open up such terrifying visions of reality, and our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation, or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
I didn't always believe this. It wasn't until I received a journal from my late uncle, documenting an obscure cult, that I began to put the pieces together. I don't know if they will find me, and assign me to my fate, but I feel it is something I must do.
The journal begins with a nightmare, seeing a large, dread figure with a gaping maw, which seemed to disobey the very laws of space and time. He kept hearing words, repeated over and over, but no words he had ever heard before. The sounds were chaos personified. If they were forced to be written in our language, the best approximation would be "Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Les'Miles B'ton'rouge wgah'nagl fhtagn".
Uneasy at the dream, he sought out the rumored cult that lived in the nearby bayou, only to be shocked and disturbed by what he found. A primitive, brutal society. One which seemed to subsist on cruelty, deep fryers, and the clothing of late 70's blaxploitation movie pimps. The two constants were the colors, yellow and purple, and the chaos. The unending chaos.
My uncle made it out alive, but only long enough to chronicle the event, and send it off to me. Soon after, he passed on. Some say it was a natural death, but I have glimpsed the chaos, and I know its root cause. I fear I have not much longer on this plane, at least not sane, but heed my warning: do not try to investigate the chaos. If you stare into the chaos for long enough, the chaos will stare into you.
(With apologies to H. P. Lovecraft)
