ONE BRAVE STATION: IT'S CUTCLIFFE
WFMY and sister station WBIR in Knoxville are reporting that Duke head coach David Cutcliffe is headed back to Tennessee. No, you cannot make them make out, Oops Pow Surprise, though if you could that would be so sweet brah. The same stations are also hedging those reports, too, so hold at arm's length.
David Cutcliffe also has a thumb for a head. That is all for now.

Mark Richt: Hello? I may finally be ready to announce our new Defensive Coordinator… Hello? Is this thing on? Why is everyone at UT and USC?

Red and Black @ 2,
Yeah, right, like we’re ever going to hire for that position.
In the meantime, Cutcliffe at UT is bad news. He’s owned UGA regardless of who calls the defense.
by Gen. Stoopnagle on Jan 14, 2010 5:08 PM EST reply actions
Well that just sucks. Duke football finally starts to exist again, and Lane Kiffin can die in a fire. I have to thank Coach Cutcliffe for making the program relevant again and I hope that Kevin White will spend money to bring in a high level coach to finish the job that Cutcliffe started.

@ 4 Gen. Stoopnagle:
I concur, bad news if true.
On a more general note – Thumb head? I’m not sure how to take that…

Meanwhile, the Bowden boys are calling each other on their cell phones just to make sure that their phones are working.
[Name Redacted] won some games for TN – can’t he be considered?

Houston Nutt is perturbed that Jimmy Sexton was too busy with Tuberville, Muschamp and Kiffin to randomly insert his name into any of the recent coaching vacancies.

Anything to get the Peyton Manning Cutcliffe Mojo back in the building I guess. Sounds like it would be a solid no nonsense hire to me.

Well, this seems like the perfect gig for someone who’s had heart bypass surgery.

To zord,
Of course kevin white will make a good hire. I mean, he got Charlie Weiss, right?
by gatorbat on Jan 14, 2010 5:32 PM EST reply actions
Zord,
Well, Cutcliffe certainly owned Martinez in a battle of OC-DC. But that seems a little like a heavyweight beating up on a retarded boxer from a lower weight class. He didn’t own Georgia when he was coaching Manning the Lesser at Ole Miss.

Kevine White will hire his favorite coach – a man of integriTY. Duke players are about to be molded.

Prior message was meant for Gen. Stoopnagle. My apologies for being a fucking idiot.
by Biggus Rickus on Jan 14, 2010 5:42 PM EST reply actions
Didn’t this job give him serious heart problems last time he took it? To the point that the unrealistic expectations of Ole miss and ND seemed like a break?

Somewhere there has to be a producer who knows what I do: Mike Leach. Duke. Reality show gold.
This must happen.
Oh, and if Tennessee actually had an option apart from Cutcliffe, I was unaware of it/him/they/she.
by Counter Trap on Jan 14, 2010 5:48 PM EST reply actions
Gatorbat and Daniel,
It’ s kind of admirable to kill a legendary program like Notre Dame, but to do the same at Duke would be infanticide. It’s hardly worth the effort.
/hopes for Leach, or for Spurrier to come back
/resigned to getting Coach [redacted]

Ron Prince is still available! Dookies — those power towels won’t swing themselves.

Joe-
Yes it did. And he said a large part of why he chose Duke was to coach in a less stressful place. That said, it’s one thing to go away from being an OC because of stress/health, but UT is the guy’s dream gig. It may have been the only program that could have pulled him away.
by Zord on Jan 14, 2010 5:52 PM EST reply actions
There’s something satisfying about Duke* football being a stepping stone program (Spurrier, Cutcliffe).
*Substitute Tennessee here

Last Duke coach to leave the pine barrens of Durham for the SEC did so well, he ended up as the one and only picture on the banner of this website , so UT has that going for it.

We can’t be far from a “No I will not coach your legendary football team” t-shirt in eye-searing orange, can we?
by PAK on Jan 14, 2010 6:14 PM EST reply actions
Cutcliffe? Awful, Fulmer-light. This will not fire up recruits or UT fans, not even a little bit. “Didn’t suck, much, at Duke” is not anything to get fired up about. They would have had a major upgrade with Dooley.

In addition to Spurrier, Wallace Wade used Duke as a starting program as well. I think he won an NC with Alabama, but he coached Duke at the only year the Rose Bowl was held outside California.
by Joe on Jan 14, 2010 6:40 PM EST reply actions
Wallace Wade left Alabama for Duke because he thought the fans expectations were unrealistic.
Really.

Calhoun, then Cutcliffe. Do they have some alphabetical list? If so, it would be pretty funny to see them work all the way down to Coach [redacted].

Whoops. My history is apocryphal. My family of Dookies had always told me Wade went to Alabama.

Negotiations fell apart because of “staff concerns.” Cutcliffe lost his job at Ole Miss because of his loyalty to his staff, and he continues to march to that beat. And the next candidate is……..uhhhhhhhhh……
