Schnellenberger to Tennessee?

LATimes.com/sports columnists are killing Kiffikins. This is so joyous, I will stop smoking legally bought medicinal marijuana for the day. <——-recruitin' advantage for Da Coacha O.

Hmmmm. Orson late night post + West Coast InsomniaSchadenfreude = earliest commentary # post on EDSBS for me ever.

Between that one shot and the whole The U thing, can ESPN get some sort of Nobel Peace Prize, or something. Or a Pulitzer?

Feel bad for Tenn football, all kidding aside.
   Their fans are really good.
   Hope they can recover quickly.

Back to kidding time:
How about Charlie Weis for Tenn coach?

What a douchebag.

Looks like Muschamp is their top choice, which would have to be an upgrade over Kiffykins. Question is, does Will want to be a head coach now, or does he want to be in Jimbo Fisher limbo for an indeterminate number of years.

Here’s to karma biting USC, HARD, when Kiffykins jumps to an NFL job next year. You know Dan Snyder is just that stupid.

by Golden Hand on Jan 13, 2010 8:10 AM EST reply actions

It is certainly good to see Meyer out and about (and clearly texting rakroots).

A friend of mine asked me if I thought Gruden to Tennessee made sense. I said “No, not near as much sense as Tony Franklin.”

Hahaha! All you dam Gaytorz and Volz are gone go down! It just shows at Urban Meyers and Lang Kiffins were both skeered of Saban and the mighty Rollin Tide of Alabama! Look out SEC! Look out World! Alabama is back where they belongs, and we coming for more national championships!

My only regret is that Les Miles never got to meet him on the field.

by Kevin@LSU on Jan 13, 2010 8:41 AM EST reply actions

No, it is a GREAT morning.

Tony Barnhardt is saying USC is not a better job than Tennessee. I guess his logic is based on the all the recruiting advantages Tennessee has over USC plus an easier schedule. Yeah, it is easier to face Alabama, Florida, and Georgia, annually than Oregon, Cal, and Stanford.

I guess you have to go with your reader base, but who are you are kidding?

by Coop on Jan 13, 2010 8:43 AM EST reply actions

It’s exactly like the Grinch’s slow, evil smile… except instead of stealing gifts and Christmas trees, Urban’s stealing the souls of the Rocky Top faithful.

by Carface on Jan 13, 2010 8:44 AM EST reply actions

I think Urb Meyer is vert happy, not about getting Kiffin out of his hair,
but,
happy that Ed Orgeron is gone. Orgeron is the best recruiter
in the business, or close to it, racking up top 10 classes at will.
The Original Gangster is back in the South (Univ of Southern Cal, that is).

Can there ever be a post that is not soiled by Alabama fans screaming ‘looky here’?

Isn’t there another Wal-Mart due for a tourist visit in Alabama right now?
Leave the commentary section alone for at least a while, while real Men and Women discuss the serious and not so serious issues of the day. Prego?

I second the motion that His Gentlemaness Mr. Schnellenberger be sent to Tennessee within the hour.

It is only at Tennessee that Schnelly will gain the experience and wisdom to finally complete his Magnum Opus, The Whiskey Compendium: A Comprehensive Experimental Study.

That chapter on Tennessee Sippin’ Whiskey isn’t gonna write itself… cheers, Mr. Schnellenberger.

This makes me smile bigger than Urb. Of course, Urban doesn’t smile near as much as I do, so it hurts him a little every time he does.

by Boatdrinks on Jan 13, 2010 9:08 AM EST reply actions

What a total douche nozzle that guy is. If there is any karma in the world (and it’s L.A., so you know there is), Kiffikins will instantly get reamed with years of sanctions when we find out that Reggie Bush took a pay cut when he went to the Saints.

Two Things:

1. Kiffykins has a losing record against UCLA.

2. On June 8, 2009, the Raiders organization issued a statement about Lane Kiffin’s hiring at Tennessee. The statement read: “Lane Kiffin is a flat-out liar. He lied to the team, he lied to the fans, and he lied to the media. He will try to destroy that university like he tried to destroy the Raiders.”

Prior to Kiffykin’s departure I was hoping the Detestable Mr. Leach would surface in Columbia with the sudden departure of Spurrier to greener fairways (does anyone doubt he’s mailing it in at this point, only staying to retain access to Augusta National?). That said, Leach at UT would be awesome for a couple of reasons:

- force the conference to innovate on both sides of the ball, much like Spurrier and Urbz did.
- creating the most dysfunctional division in the nation with Leach, Urbz, Spurrier and Richt (Evil or Good) playing each other week in and week out and having ready access to media outlets to slam each other freely and openly (Mike Slive be damned).

Leach, Kiffin, Urbz and Richt would have been better but Spurrier’s biting commentary is almost as good as Kiffin’s unintentional comedy act.

@17 – um, that’s referred to as parody.

by Counter Trap on Jan 13, 2010 9:51 AM EST reply actions

Coop:

A 1-loss USC team was blatantly overlooked to go to the BCS title game both in 2007 and 2008 in order to place an SEC team there, the SEC team having the same amount of losses. That will happen for the foreseeable future. If both USC and UT’s goal is winning championships (hold the laughter on the latter name for now) then in today’s day and age it’s a better job because UT will be picked over USC for a slot in the BCS game when they have identical records.

by Terry Bowdens Shoe Lifts on Jan 13, 2010 9:59 AM EST reply actions

rjsplow,

I wouldn’t call them “blatantly overlooked.” They just didn’t do anything more impressive than the SEC champ with the same record. They also don’t have a conference championship game to build on their resume, which is a distinct disadvantage.

Also, when was the last time Tennessee had as good a record as USC? 2001? It is far easier to be good every year at USC than it is at Tennessee, which has to recruit more regionally than Florida and Georgia or even LSU and Alabama. It’s not impossible obviously, but provided the other five major programs in the SEC have at least decent coaches it’s harder to make it to the national title game for them. Rarely will any team in the Pac-10 have the same talent level as USC.

by Biggus Rickus on Jan 13, 2010 10:10 AM EST reply actions

After his comments about USC grads pumping gas I’m shocked they hired him.

I understand Kiffinkins moving on, next year UT is going to be bottom bitch in the east but what is the deal with Monte?Guilt for sleeping with ta secretary at NC State?

“Sorry boy I will make it up to you, someday I will be too old to be hired and I promise I will move on the drop of a dime and save you from yourself. Just don’t tell. We good, now go on and get daddy is working on the cover two.”

by CougarAce The Band on Jan 13, 2010 10:10 AM EST reply actions

@ rjsplow

USC had 2 losses in 2007 that prevented them from going to the title game.

by Kevin@LSU on Jan 13, 2010 10:18 AM EST reply actions

Not sure of the answer, but in, say 1992, would there be an argument that USC is a better job than UT? 1997?

by Ltrain on Jan 13, 2010 10:23 AM EST reply actions

I see what you did there, Dark Knight. Meyer gets lumped in with Pete Caroll, seeking the strange out.

@ 36 – that is what sends you to Tennessee over USC? The notion that, if both schools have one loss, Tennessee will get to play in the BCS title game?

Yeah, the above will keep you warm at night.

I, and any unobjective human being, would prefer USC’s recruiting advantages, USC’s schedule advantages, and the comparable paycheck.

Oh no, I may not get to play for the national title, one year. Wooptie doo. I would prefer to have legitimate job securtiy and not be bothered by a bunch of inbred hillbillies with less than 20 teeth putting my cell phone and home address on the Internet after every loss.

Southern Cal is a superior to job to Tennessee according to me and, apparently, Lane Kiffin. Granted both of are judgment could be questioned from time to time, but not on this score.

by Coop on Jan 13, 2010 10:23 AM EST reply actions

correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the SEC teams in 2007-2008 win the championship?
USC’s back was broken in the 2005 game when Pete Carroll failed on that 4th-and-1

by jdub on Jan 13, 2010 10:25 AM EST reply actions

that said, Coop’s right – USC is a better job, all things being equal, from the average coach’s perspective.

by jdub on Jan 13, 2010 10:26 AM EST reply actions

rjsplow,

In order to make a case for all the arcane stupidity that is the BCS generating something “blatant”—you are going to have to try harder.

Anyone seen Holly around? Should we send someone to check on her?

by Wooderson on Jan 13, 2010 11:08 AM EST reply actions

1) I made an error in my previous post- I meant 2006 and 2008, not 2007 (they did have 2 losses in 2007).

2) The PAC-10 isn’t SEC-level deep but it is improving. This isn’t 2003-2005 anymore. USC got beat up by Stanford this past season, for fuck’s sake. I don’t think USC can take a conference championship for granted for the foreseeable future, no matter how highly rated their recruiting classes are.

3) My original post, while inarticulately crafted, was only to point out that while USC is in a better position to win conference championships, UT is in a better position to play for and win a national championship…provided they first win the SEC.

4) USC might be a better job objectively but until the hammer comes down from the NCAA (and I wonder at this point whether it will) no one will know how hard the school will be hit with sanctions. Tough sanctions could tilt the issue significantly.

5) I was just ::trying:: to make the argument based on what Barnhart claimed. I don’t really know what I believe at this point. Assuming he doesn’t’ become the coach of the Bears in a year or two, I suppose we’ll just have to see what happens.

by rjsplow on Jan 13, 2010 11:11 AM EST reply actions

It is how you call it? Water-from-sky today in Southern California for the first time this year. Not an omen. Nope. No sir.

Either God is weeping for the SoCal faithful, or the Golden Boy’s tears are showering us with relentlessly optimistic tears of joy.

by dogtown gator on Jan 13, 2010 11:13 AM EST reply actions

@37- Was Tennessee the SEC team picked over Southern Cal in either of those years?

A 12-1 Tennessee would likely get picked for the national title over an 11-1 Southern Cal. That’s not the point – so would a 12-1 Vanderbilt. The point is Southern Cal has both a richer recruiting base and an easier path to victories and conference titles. They are also a bigger name than Tennessee in about 35 out of 50 states.
