No, no, come on to Florida. Urban will be right back, we promise. He is just resting so he can come back and coach you even better.

South Pittsburgh? Just drive over to the Lodge outlet, by yourself a big cast-iron skillet and smack yourself in the head with it for a while. You’ll feel better.

This is a most impressive display of regime destabilization by the Kiffins.

Jedi Master Monte just used an old mind trick on Urban to blow up UF’s fan base and recruiting.

I’m worried now that Georgia will hire some sort of Tennessee plant as a defensive coordinator.

Wait…maybe MARTINEZ WAS THE PLANT! DAMN!

by CincySooner on Dec 27, 2009 4:38 PM EST reply actions

This is wimpy BS. Deciding to resign or even take a leave is one thing; working through one’s emotions in public is a poor example, poor leadership, and unfair to all involved. How damn disappointing.

by Pat on Dec 27, 2009 4:39 PM EST reply actions

So I guess Brian was lucky that he wrote his most poignant piece (Eleven Swans before the 2006 UM/OSU game) about someone who could not change his mind.

by maskedavenger on Dec 27, 2009 4:44 PM EST reply actions

So, he only knows how to coach one way, the way that sent him to the hospital on more than one occasion.

And, NOW, he will coach less, or spend less time working, with no Mullen and no Strong, not to mention no RC, Gonzalez.

Yeah, the above makes sense.

Garner, Saban’s stable, Kiffen’s stable, etc etc etc need to be smelling blood and pillage Florida’s recruiting class.

Heck, we might even steal someone from Florida. Nah, probably not.

I actually feel bad for Florida. Nothing about this situation is good —at least for the near future. Meyer went from sounding admirable and thoughtful for his family to selfish and oblivious to the consequences of his actions.

That press conference – wow. At least they didn’t make Butch Davis do a presser after he had his nervous breakdown. Poor Urban was out of it, and his evasiveness regarding his “health” (read: mental health) issues was telling. What a disaster for the Gator Nation.

Also, who, exactly, decided that Bob Stoops is now a serious candidate for every major coaching job in college? Strange.

by Ancient Chinese Secret on Dec 27, 2009 5:53 PM EST reply actions

Urban treats his health first, and your emotions second.

by Kevin@LSU on Dec 27, 2009 5:56 PM EST reply actions

This was all a ploy by Urban to get Kiffen to lay off him. Now if Kiffen jumps on him again, it will look real bad on Kiffie. Unlike Saban, who answered Kiffin silently by getting the verbal from the best player out of Memphis in the upcoming signing class. This happened the very day after Kiffie took a swipe at Saban and Lance Thompson claimed Saban would not get any players drom their territory and was gonna build a fence around Memphis. Kiffie learned his lesson with Saban real quick, better to laud Lord Saban and try to lull him to sleep than throw rocks at the beast. His approach with both Saban and Meyer almost worked for him this season. After Meyer made his health issues public, now Kiffin will look like the ultimate douchebag if he continues his public verbal sparring with Meyer. Saban probably told Meyer, “I am sorry my son, you are unable to take the same approach as me to shut up the Kiffikins, you must find another angle, here is how you do this.” Then Saban started handpicking the recruits on UF’s verbal list he wants. Hey, it works out for all parties involved. Even Kiffie will get a couple of the thugs from UF’s upcoming signing class, who will eventually hold up a church during collection, with water pistols filled with Courvoisier.

I would say that this will hurt recruiting, but then again if someone wants to go to a football school in the state of Florida, the Gators could hire Jim Zorn and things would just fall into place. The Noles and Canes don’t have a flux capacitor.

by Mark on Dec 27, 2009 10:10 PM EST reply actions

@31 – after December 5th, perhaps he should. Conversely, perhaps Saban will learn from Urbs and schedule Charleston Southern or the Citadel.

by The Tusk on Dec 27, 2009 10:14 PM EST reply actions

So here’s what’s going to happen.

1. The Gators have a semi-legitimate non-conference game with USF in early September.
2. Through some amazing combination of Addazio’s incompetence and the Bulls’ annual tradition of peaking in the third game of the season, USF will pull off the upset.
3. FULL-ON ADDAZIO SHITSTORM GOES HERE
4. Urban decides it’s time to end his vacation, Addazio is run out of town on a rail, Gators return to kicking ass.

by TampaGatorGal on Dec 27, 2009 11:25 PM EST reply actions

This is obvious people.

(option 1) UF realized it mis-managed the situation. Urban, “restated” the situation, now they can look for a new coach “under cover” while Meyer continues to recruit, so as not to lose your recruits.

(option 2) Either that or Urban is the biggest drama queen in college football and since he got the smack down from Saban, is now doing everything he can to get attention.

I’m leaning towards option 1 at this time, although Urbie’s consistent ability speaking out of both sides of his mouth makes everything suspect.

by atepesm on Dec 27, 2009 11:28 PM EST reply actions

(option 3) Urban actually did succumb to the stress of being the highest profile head coach in college football and decided to resign. The UF athletic department shit itself at the prospects of hiring a head coach and talked him into just taking some time off so that he doesn’t go into cardiac arrest midway through the first game of next season.

I almost left graduate school and my department pretty much insisted that I instead take a leave of absence just to be sure leaving is what I wanted to do. I can imagine that Urban Meyer is slightly more important for the Florida athletic program than I am to my graduate program.

@52 It always amazes me at how fast the worm turns in college football. One season you have 13 All-Americans on your team, have the coach of the year on your sidelines, recruiting is going great, the fan base is motivated, playing with regularity in the top 5

…the next season, you are an also-ran who’s coach just left for whatever reason, your All-Americans are inellegible or left for the NFL, your recruits don’t produce due to lack of coaching.

Seen it everywhere, regardless of conference or team pedigree. It’s absolutely amazing.

For all the flak Urban has been getting, what people are missing here is someone who has excelled at every facet of his career to reach the very top of his profession is showing us all just how difficult it is to balance the near complete sacrifice nearly everything to a career and the very real human need for a stable home life.

Most of us will never have such a profession. About the closest I have ever seen personally was as a US Army company commander of about 200 troops. You simply cannot do such a job well without 16-hour days and a complete subjugation of everything you know as ‘self’. The toll on families and your own health is incredible. Long term sleep deprivation is only the first brick in the path.

SEC rivalries aside, here’s to Urban being able to have his health, his family and still continue to coach. He’s a fundamental part of this current ‘Golden Age’ of SEC football that we’re all enjoying.

War Eagle!

Sullivan013

P.S. How JoePa has managed to do this at age 83 in his SIXTYETH year of active coaching (let that sink in for a minute) is a freaking miracle.

But I hope Urban Meyer has a Heart Attack, preferably at the instant whoever’s kicking for Auburn in 2011 kicks the game winning field goal, and have you ever BEEN to East Alabama Medical Center? Not exactly the Mayo Clinic
And I hope Kiffin gets Alzheimers so he lets the clock run out before kicing the game winning field goal, hey it worked for les Miles.
Thats what SEC football is all about, hating your enemies, using their warm slippery guts to grease the treads of your tanks.
