Steve Kragthorpe: Hovering above Kentucky in a surly orbit, because whatever, man, he can get a job in the Coast Guard, like, tomorrow. They have Coast Guard in Kentucky.

All right, master teevee schedule is hyah, and don't miss the Grambling-Southern band battle on NBC (2:00 kickoff). Everybody upright after their holiday indulgences? Pour a weak one out for the fallen scourge of Krag1N1 and tell us how you're closing out the regular season con gusto.

In honor of Baby Rhino’s final Swamp outing, I shall be drinking the tears of a virgin…drizzled lightly over double-scotches.

At HQ Control here in the Metroplex.

The main event:

Arky @ LSU – Hopefully, this is the penultimate game of Gary Crowton’s career as OC, punctuated by his continued lack of creativity in playcalling.

Sterger @ Florida – There are only two more times after this to see the Baby Rhino in collegiate action.

The undercard is below.

Morning Session:

Wind Turbines @ Oklahoma

Afternoon Session:

Bayou Classic (Southern @ Grambling) – Southern’s band rule the Halftime Show. The football team needs to get back to winning this game, too.

Utah State @ Idaho – For the final time this season: Kibbie Dome, bitches.

Night Session:

UGA @ GT

ND @ Leland Stanford Junior University

On The Menu: Seafood Gumbo, with beer to cool it down.

Clemmonses at Sakerlina for the early shift, trying to be productive (and failing).

Then headed to tailgate on the Flats before Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate. My last game in the student section of Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field. Glad it’s for a night game where in the Jackets annihilate the mutts.

Sacrificed the early west-coast AM games to try and get my car running – which was successful. Catching 30 min of OSU / Okie and then slowly working my way to attendance at Stanford / ND. Which would’ve been a lot more fun had Stanford won last weekend… but oh well, Weis’ last game and booing Notre Dame still a fun Saturday make.

Now the only question is: what combination of bourbon and other liquids do I gather on my trek to Caltrain for the 30 min ride to Palo Alto and ample tailgates there? I’m thinking a tallboy of light beer (gotta get my water in!) and a toddler sized Crown.

Right now: Florida State @ Florida.

I should start cracking beers and mixing cocktails in the next hour or so. I’d have started earlier, but I’m sort of in-charge of this 9 month old boy. Some might say it’s time to start drinking heavily anyway and at times, I’d agree.

At 8 there is only Clean, Old Fashioned Hate and one last chance for the Dawgs to redeem themselves for 2009.

Then I’ll make sure that I’m good and hung over tomorrow by drinking my way through this mini-fridge of 2 Shiner Bocks, 3 Dale’s Pale Ales, 2 Coors tall boys, 4 cans of Miller High Life, one Carlsberg and a half a pint of Crown Royal while watching USC-UCLA.

So, apparently, USC and UGA will be meeting in Tampa next week for the ACC Championship. The All Clown Conference’s two best teams lost to two schools who were 6-5 going into the game. From the first week of the season (USC over NC St., Alabama over Va Tech) to the last week of the season (Florida, Georgia and USC all beating their instate ACC rivals), the Southeastern Conference has owned the ACC all year.

Easy on the SEC crap. Biggest bunch of vicariously swinging johnson I’ve ever heard of. If we are to follow your same logic, Duke would have beaten Florida last year… Take a downer. It’s never as good or as bad as it looks…

Now, it GT can take care of business, the loss won’t mean much. We’re 10-2 they’re 7-5. WE still BCS elligible, they’re not. Good for us. Hopefully this saves WM job for another drubbing next year.

Brian @ #62:

As Chris Rock (or somebody) once said, “A slut fucks everybody; a bitch fucks everybody but you.” So I believe what you meant to write was, “Enjoy the win, bitches.”

But yeah, keep complaining about Georgia’s alleged lack of class. That’ll solve your defense.

by Doug on Nov 29, 2009 10:32 AM EST reply actions

I’m starting to wonder where all the defensive recruits in Georgia are going. Tennessee? Florida? Not sure what’s wrong with that state. Like Orson said in the Alphabetical, Derrick Morgan, Morgan Burnett, and nine tackling dummies dressed as small white kids won’t get it done.

I don’t think there’s anything to “solve” on defense, like Georgia for example. Tech needs some breadth and depth first on that squad.

in lieu of a back and forth yes/no battle with you like a three year old, I’ll play the better man. Go ahead and bark. Congrats! You won.

We’ll still be ranked ahead of you. You have all year to wallow in a hollow superiority enjoying the PapaJohns inconsequential bowl. We’ll play in a better bowl with a better payout regardless.

by gespacho on Nov 29, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions

I dispute the idea that the Georgia game is all that matters at Tech. Aren’t we well into the Acceptance phase?

It always sucks to lose to a dreadful team, but as a Florida fan I understand that rivalries can be lopsided for a long time. Each year I know they will beat UGA and FSU, then lose to some goofy SEC West team. It’s just how it is. Tech also seems to be a contender in their division now — as weak as the ACC is, it’s still something else to look forward to besides trying to ruin the season of your bigger and stronger archrival. I’m also pretty satisfied that the stubborn fucking redneck, Paul Johnson, won’t put up with another 8 out of 9 like some coaches who play Reggie Ball for 4 years, for example.

I think the ACC fanboys need to give it up this season too. I’m actually less concerned with losing the two rivalry games — Richt clearly had this game circled more so than, say, the Kentucky game due to the loss at home last year. On the other hand, Clemson losing to Maryland is simply embarrassing because it sums up the futility of this horrid conference. At least Tech took care of the true dregs in the SEC, Vandy and Miss St., but otherwise it’s a down year of a down existence for the ACC.

by Tim James on Nov 29, 2009 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Re: Gespacho @ 75:

Congrats on your success and best wishes against Clemson. I’m glad to see Tech get over the malaise of the Gailey years, and I’m hopeful that it bodes well for some great late season interconference matchups going forward.

Tim sums it up succinctly: winning the ACC may get you a BCS bowl bid, but that and a dollar will buy you a candy bar. The conference will really need to start beating the Big East and mid-major champions to get the level of respect you want.

The ACC conference post expansion has so far failed miserably to live up to expectations.

Regarding bowls:

I’m tempted to see how the bowl picture shakes out. The win last night definitely helps UGA. Very probable we can still end up in the Peach Bowl which would be a damn fine way to end this season.

by Red and Black on Nov 29, 2009 1:50 PM EST reply actions

@76: Right. If Clemson hadn’t lost to Maryland, UNC hadn’t lost to Virginia, and VT hadn’t lost to UNC at home on a Thursday night (DAMNIT DAMNIT DAMNIT — how the hell do you get outcoached by Butch Davis on gameday?), the rivalry fail wouldn’t matter as much — Clemson and UNC would be solidly ranked still and VT would be very much in the discussion for a BCS at-large bid.

As it stands, though, the top-ranked ACC team is going to a third-rate bowl at ~#11 without much chance to move up. And the league’s actual champion will head for the BCS as either (a) a bad team or (b) a team hoping last year didn’t mean that their dominant regular-season offense is easy to figure out when the other team spends a month preparing for it exclusively. Don’t get me wrong, my man-crush on Paul Johnson’s coaching is as strong as anyone’s, but if they get their butts whipped again the ACC has a problem that I’m not sure it’s equipped to solve.

by JoshC on Nov 29, 2009 1:54 PM EST reply actions

@68: If UCLA doesn’t think the game’s over, then I don’t see why USC has to act like it is. I feel dirty defending USC here, but if you try to end the game by taking a knee and your rival takes a timeout despite the fact that they won’t get the ball back even if they do, just to prolong the game for no purpose, go ahead and give ’em hell.

by SpartanDan on Nov 29, 2009 2:04 PM EST reply actions

Paul Johnson still hasn’t had a chance to get his players in there on offense full time. The only insurmountable problem is recruiting defenders, which is a challenge given the smaller pool and proximity to SEC teams. There is still some hope that local recruits will choose Tech despite the rivalry loss since UGA seems to be declining, but then they have to fight with schools like Tennessee. Maybe winning the championship and bowl game would help that but who knows.

I don’t think Tech’s bowl game problem last year was LSU’s preparation, just trying to run the triple option against a good SEC defense with Chan Gailey recruits. As long as they don’t get matched up against Florida or something ridiculous, I think they’ll look better at the very least.

by Tim James on Nov 29, 2009 2:05 PM EST reply actions

@75
I fail to see how our worst team in a decade beating your best team in two rings of “hollow superiority.”

Rings pretty solid to me.

Only at Tech would the game with the better payout matter. Guess you need it since your athletic department operates in the red. UGA uses Ulysses S. Grants for toilet paper.

by Silver Britches on Nov 29, 2009 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Haha, Tech is behind VT now in both polls. What a joke.

by Tim James on Nov 29, 2009 2:46 PM EST reply actions

Chan Gailey recruits? What? Johnson was very lucky he has had Nesbitt, Dwyer, Burnett, Thomas et. al. Hell, 95% of their offensive production is coming from Gailey’s 07 class, which was very good, especially for Tech. Johnson will have a much easier time recruiting D talent than he will getting O talent especially those with the same skill set as he has right now. Without a Nesbitt running that show, they are a .500 team, not too many Nesbitt’s beating down the door to play in that kind of O.

My point being, for Tech, enjoy this year, b/c this is as good as it gets with CPJ. Next year, the dawgs O will be improved, we have a qb you will learn about named Aaron Murray, and our D and special teams (with new coaches) can’t go anywhere but up. But that’s fine if you want to keep thinking the dawgs are on the decline.

by BKDawg on Nov 29, 2009 3:18 PM EST reply actions

Thanks, I will indeed keep thinking that. As I am also an SEC fan, I have a larger perspective on Georgia’s ineptitude, but like I’ve said my hats off to them for keeping the rivalry lopsided.

by Tim James on Nov 29, 2009 4:07 PM EST reply actions

@ 84:

All right, TJ, I’ll bite.

Pray tell, inform me of why Georgia is in decline.

by Red and Black on Nov 29, 2009 4:54 PM EST reply actions

It’s a dead weight thing. I’m willing to concede they will be better next year with fresh coaches and a redo on things like turnovers and penalties, although you never know. If they can beat Tennessee and Florida next season without dropping the SEC East upsets I’ll be impressed. I don’t say it with much malice; the Eastern division has been pretty crappy for a while and it’s healthy for the GT rivalry when both teams are good unlike this year and last when it was only one of the two.

I felt the same about Auburn but it’s possible that Georgia can turn it around without needing a 7 loss season. I may be letting myself read too much into one down season, since I always say it’s silly how much we try to generalize based on the vagaries of a single football game. Good luck in the Peach Bowl.
