WASHAUN EALEY CLEARLY HATES GEORGIA FOOTBALL AND COMMON DECENCY
In addition to hiring the driving coordinator potentially saving Georgia players thousands of dollars of fines and missed games annually, Georgia may want to consider a short-term hire in the messaging and media relations department.
Ealey says he doesn’t agree with those who have said the suspension was not stiff enough. He said on Tuesday Spikes "shouldn’t, I think, get suspended at all."

Okay…I know we’re supposed to be all snarky and witty on here, but this issue has really opened my eyes yet again to how dumb the general internet using populace really is at its core. People never look at things for themselves. They never comprehend what they read or understand the basic meaning of words in the English language.
Makes me appreciate Orson all the more because he is clearly a sophisticated and erudite individual.

If Brandon Spikes wants to gouge your eyes, then Brandon Spikes will gouge your eyes. Does Mr. Ealey still have said eyes? In good working order? With no injury? Then Brandon Spikes did not try to eye gouge anybody and was just playing ticklefacepeekaboo.

Where is the post about the Oregon-USC game that was supposedly so much more important than eye-gouging? Sounds like that Arp Brigade Media Relations Dept. is savvier than you think, Orson.

Thanks for the Online Athens link. The AP article was a joke.

I gotta hand it to this freshman for being a reasonable sportsman here. I’ve been surprised over the years how dirty the Florida-Georgia game compared to say, Tennessee or Florida State. Maybe I wasn’t paying attention but it seems like those teams lately have just showed up to play the game (or not, when Tenn players allegedly gave up that one year). Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

SEC: What’s going on here, you two?
Spikes [sotto voce, to Ealey]: Be smart.
Spikes [to all, normal volume]: Aw, nuthin’ wahden. We was just playing’ around, just goofin around, see?
Ealey [nodding in desperate agreement]: Yeah, yeah warden. We was just playin! Just playin!
SEC: Well, alright then.

And even though I am a Gator forever, I should say that while Spikes’ hands may have been nowhere near Ealey’s eyes, I’m still pretty sure Spikes was not intent on Ealey’s best interests. Frankly, I support the suspension, regardless of intent even, on the basis of the terrible optics (ahem) of the situation for Meyer, etc, recruiting, etc.
by jdub on Nov 3, 2009 5:07 PM EST reply actions
Again, since it couldn’t be seen whether any eyes were actually gouged in the video clip, this treads on what was Spikes’ “intent.” Not much according to Ealey. First half suspension is good enough. It’s Spikes’ reputation which has suffered and will now follow him into the NFL draft. Of course that means his stock has astronomically risen on the Oakland Raiders’ board. I expect to see him taken without hesitation or remorse by the He-man Woman Haters Club.

re: the question of whether eyes were actually gouged:
See Codge, supra:

I suggest that this test will take its place in jurisprudence beside strict scrutiny and other yardsticks of judgement. And well should it.

So when we see something dangerous done towards players on our team, we’re supposed to use our judgment and look at the big picture, and compare possible injury with a dance, all the while avoiding group-think.
Now, when we’re exercising our independent thought and happen to disagree about the basic problem in the case, you criticize us for that.
Whatever, Swindle.

Just for your edification: (from David Hale’s awesome Georgia blog)
"It was a hard-fought game," Georgia linebacker Marcus Dowtin said. "Stuff like that, it happens. People try to play a little harder than another person. I’ve got no hard feelings toward (Spikes). He’s a great player, he works hard. What he did I don’t think was smart, but stuff happens in a game."
Spikes’ teammates in Florida, however, have pinned the blame for the incident square on Georgia’s players, saying the eye gouge came in retaliation for actions the Bulldogs made earlier in the game.
That’s news to Richt, who said he reviewed the film from the game looking for any examples of poor sportsmanship from the Bulldogs and came up empty.
“The only thing I noticed that I could think of is there was a time in the game when, (Spikes’) helmet comes off quite often, and there was one time where his helmet came off in the middle of a play, and he actually got hit with his helmet off," Richt said. "It was totally unintentional. Everybody was just playing ball. And that might have got him bent out of shape, but I don’t know. I have no earthly idea about all that.”

I’m seriously sitting here laughing in a very classy manner at this sentence…“That’s news to Richt, who said he reviewed the film from the game looking for any examples of poor sportsmanship from the Bulldogs and came up empty.”
Richt said that with a straight face? Did he miss the personal fouls that were actually called and/or pointed out on national television by the commentators? Or was he just saying that other than those instances his players were choirboys?
by zzgator on Nov 3, 2009 11:03 PM EST reply actions
@ 47 -
Reaching, sir. If every single personal foul and foul in general is a “dirty play” in the same way that trying to blind someone is, you’ve just become spokesman #1 for the NRA in America today.
“Stepped on my lawn? That’s why we gots our gun rights, yankee!”
by Will on Nov 3, 2009 11:29 PM EST reply actions
@49
I wouldn’t interpret zz as saying sticking a hand in a face mask isn’t high up on the list of dirty plays, just that Richt is smoking some nice peyote if he can’t find a SINGLE play where UGA may have played outside the rules. Kind of guts any righteous indignation if you can’t admit your players may have also done some not so nice things, even if not Spikesian in level.

@49
That would be “ma’am”…and you made that NRA crack like it was an insult.
by zzgator on Nov 3, 2009 11:55 PM EST reply actions
There are two pretty obvious reasons for Richt et al to play the “it’s just a game” card; first, UGA has evaded scrutiny in the press for their “activities” on the field, so they can afford to be magnanimous, and second, UGA undoubtedly wants to avoid turning this into a contest of duelling “greatest hits” clips, which would be the inevitable result of pushing their current perceptual advantage. Frankly, between good luck and prudent management, UGA has come out of this much better than anyone could have expected (though there’s no telling what the two teams involved have heard in private from the SEC.) And Richt must be very relieved indeed that this has been the post-game narrative, rather than… oh, I don’t know, losing by three touchdowns. Again.
by peachy on Nov 4, 2009 12:01 AM EST reply actions
Funny, I don’t remember all of this righteous indignation from the media when Darnell Dickface twisted Earnest Graham’s knee – an act that actually ended up injuring EG, and quite possibly cost us an SEC title, a shot at the national title, and led to Spurrier quitting and leaving us with [name redacted] as head coach.
So, forgive me if I’m not ready to jump all over our player for what, in the end, is really not much more than an illegal hands to the face penalty. But then, I guess I’d be bitter too if my generation had lost 17 out of the last 20 to a team that every previous generation had beaten like they were owed money.

It seems that the only people all wound up about this are fans. Clearly, the hand went in the mask on purpose. The players involved don’t seem to give a shit. Why should they, its not like he was dancing. Cause when players start dancing, that’s when things cross the line.
Right, ZZ?
by Mr. Tu on Nov 4, 2009 10:36 AM EST reply actions
Actually, it seems that sports “journalists” are the ones really wound up…moreso than the fans.
Again, the dancing prompted a league mandated public apology by the head coach. Dumbass actions on behalf of a fired up individual player…not so much.
