SPIKES SUSPENDED FOR HALF OF VANDY GAME
We're still Alphabeticalizing, but this needs mentioning: Spikes has been suspended for the first half of the Vandy game by Meyer. Commence overreaction in both directions, please.

Hmm.
Corch thinks this is harsh, Rich Brooks thinks this is bullshit, Nick Saban just doesn’t have time for this shit, Peter Carroll is stoked, and Lane Kiffin isn’t surprised it didn’t get called.
Just to cover all of that.

Seems like an appropriate punishment for getting caught. And not at all like a mere attempt to keep the SEC from suspending him for the entire game.

Would that be the half he committed the infraction in? Or the other half? In unrelated news Bowden appeals to vacate half-games rather than whole games.

How much time has Spikes missed due to injury? Maybe the full-game suspension was pro-rata

Surprised he wasn’t suspended for the second half when the game will already have been decided. That Corch Meyer is a real disciplinarian!
by Crabapple Buck on Nov 2, 2009 1:05 PM EST reply actions
Absolutely ridiculous that he is getting away with half game suspension, against a team that they should be able to beat if they don’t run any plays against, whats so ever. I’m not saying kick him off the team, or suspend him for the year (yeah I know its the same thing), but he did get caught trying to BLIND someone, on National TV. And if I’m thinking correctly, that would be a form of assault, which if the said UGA player wanted to, he could press charges. I know his arguement is that someone did it to me earlier, but that still doesn’t give him the rhyme or reason to return it, much less the fact that it was him who is obviously caught on close-up, especially on ESPN where they single out everything with a glowing disk. Grow up kid, soon you’ll be making mega millions, and you’ll have to just grin it and bear it as you get pounded in the NFL.

He should be suspended for an entire game for stupidity, alone. Anyone who has played a down of football knows what goes on in piles, and we are all fortunate to still have usage of our eyes and more precious parts…
but in broad daylight? Again, stupidity.
Also, these SEC refs continue to give ACC refs solid competition for ineptitude.
Otherwise, who cares.

I was unaware that over 258.73 football players in Division I-A football (suck it FCS) were blinded each year by heinous acts just like this one! Sonofabitch, it’s an epidemic!! It’s the swine flu of football!!!
If you’re going to throw around sentences like “he did get caught trying to BLIND someone,” you’re going to need at least one example of a football player being blinded by being poked in the eye in the last, say, 20 years. Because I’ve got to say, I watch a lot of football, and there are a lot of these incidents that happen by open admission of anyone who ever played the game, and never once have I seen/heard of somebody actually being blinded. So that’s your challenge: find a college football player blinded by such an action, and perhaps the indignation will become righteous. But I doubt it will happen.

by Gator Bone on Nov 2, 2009 1:39 PM EST reply actions
Well, Crabapple…are you asking if I would poke someone in the eye in a pile? or if I would suspend a player for doing so?
The term “gouging” is sensationalism at its finest.
And my answers would be, no and yes.
Unfortunately, all the players on the field in Jacksonville who undoubtedly engaged in a little extra-curricular poking, punching and twisting will not be subject to the same suspension.
That’s life. Easiest way to not get caught is to not do it.

Mike and Mike go off on him. It’s easy to say Georgia fans are overreacting to this, because you hate us and we hate you. But these are not Georgia fans, and Golic doesn’t sound too pleased at this. I enjoy the moralizing that people try to do after football games like any of it matters. Truthfully, I’m happy Ealey wasn’t hurt. I’m also glad that nothing serious occurred to hurt Spikes, since he is claiming (and I’m not denying the possibility of) that a Georgia player did it to him. I would like to think I’d act the same way if the video showed our guy doing it to you, but I can’t promise it. However, using that as an excuse to argue for the light punishment is bad on your part, Swindle.

I would liken the conduct of the Bulldogs to the money changers at the temple. Brandon’s reaction parallels that of Jesus.
I don’t mind the suspension, though. When I rip off Varsity Blues again at halftime of the Vandy game, it will be extra-meaningful to Brandon.
Have a blessed day.

“Mom!, Brandon poked me in the eye!” What a bunch of cry babies. The only reason this is a factor is because it was caught on tape. This type of stuff happens every play. Had Georgia not been “Supplying the butt” for THE LAST TWO DECADES, this would have been brushed off the shoulders. The new uniforms, by the way, look like a goddamn prison squad. The whole time Im waiting for the ninja to throw the ball at Dunlaps crotch a la Burt Reynolds. Instead he repeatedly threw it to the Gators, who then used the change of possesion to rack up more points.(Also, to break historical records, held dearly by the UGA faithful, as a symbol of their antiquated glory)
Hey at least now, thanks to the City of Jacksonville, the sullen ride home to Athens doesnt take as long.

I don’t think this sets a good precedent. Are we going to review every game for things like this?
For example, there are helmet to helmet hits in every game that result in a real injury (not a possible eye injury) that not only aren’t called on the field but aren’t punished later after flim review.
Not defending what Spikes did, but it seems a little too much to me.

Indignation is especially awesome when its done selectively (ie, being pissed about Spikes’ actions without uttering a word of disapproval amout identical/similar behavior of your own players). Seems like any earnest dialogue about sportsmanship can’t begin until your public outrage results in Richt suspending some of your guys, too. Until then, excuse the rest of us for laughing at you.

Can anyone prove intent? Check the Darnell Dockett/Earnest Graham/Rex Grossman case. In that incident Graham was injured and unable to play the next week. The OBC wanted UF Admini to sue Dockett. When they refused to pursue the case, SOS took all the heat and left for the NFL. FSU took no action. “I’ve never in my 47 years had a coach accuse my players of dirty play,” said Bowden. “But now this is twice he’s done it. Sad, really.”

I’m not surprised by Meyer’s actions. He has always been light on punishment.
But I am surprised by the reaction of the incident by the Florida fans. I would think you guys would care.
Once again, I do not care if everyone else does it, it doesn’t make it right.
Everyone in Rwanda likes to rape and brutalize women, so if I go on vacation there, it’s cool, right?
BTW, Italian Gator, here ya go: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1028914/index.htm
I really hope that the SEC drops the hammer on him, but not for the reason of him doing it (although that is enough reason to throw the book at him, metaphorically), but because of Meyer’s bullshit “suspension”. Mike Shula caught shit fron SEC fans for his bullshit supsensions, it should be no different.
I’m not a Georgia fan. Let me make that perfectly clear.
And if all this shit has been going on for twenty years on every play, how come, in the world of 900 cameras on the field, with review, super slow motion, overhead cameras, etc., has this never been caught?
I guess though if the guy wasn’t blinded permanently, then everything is cool.
I hope Saban calls for Terrence Cody to do a fucking belly- flop on Tim Tebow’s knees for the first thirty plays in the SEC champsionship game.
I mean, even if he blows out both of his knees, it is cool, since it will only temporarily inconvience him.

It could be worse. Michigan’s nut-punching Mark Ortmann tried to de-man Illinois’ Corey Liuget with a quick uppercut to the jewels after a fumble recovery. Now THAT is how you bring shame to your program.

@40 -
The differences being that in Spikes case it was an individual acting alone and whose conduct was immediately disapproved by the coaches and fans, whereas the Celebration was a collective effort, orchestrated by Richt and widely endorsed the Uga fans in the crowd that afternoon. I don’t think anyone is standing up for Spikes (at least not seriously). Certainly not me. But that’s a different point than the one I think Orson is making, which is that the whining coming from the Uga side can’t be taken seriously unless its also directed at its own players.

An eye injury caused by a ref hurling a projectile? That’s your comeback?
How many people are injured by unlicensed drivers each year? I think arrests for that warrant a suspension from at least a half.
I mean if we’re going to over-react…let’s really OVER-REACT!!!!!! Look at what California has to say about these LAW BREAKERS!!!! OMG!!!!!
Legislative Findings
14607.4 – The Legislature finds and declares all of the following:
(a) Driving a motor vehicle on the public streets and highways is a privilege, not a right.
(b) Of all drivers involved in fatal accidents, more than 20 percent are not licensed to drive. A driver with a suspended license is four times as likely to be involved in a fatal accident as a properly licensed driver.
© At any given time, it is estimated by the Department of Motor Vehicles that of some 20 million driver’s licenses issued to Californians, 720,000 are suspended or revoked. Furthermore, 1,000,000 persons are estimated to be driving without ever having been licensed at all.
(d) Over 4,000 persons are killed in traffic accidents in California annually, and another 330,000 persons suffer injuries.
(e) Californians who comply with the law are frequently victims of traffic accidents caused by unlicensed drivers. These innocent victims suffer considerable pain and property loss at the hands of people who flaunt the law. The Department of Motor Vehicles estimates that 75 percent of all drivers whose driving privilege has been withdrawn continue to drive regardless of the law.
(f) It is necessary and appropriate to take additional steps to prevent unlicensed drivers from driving, including the civil forfeiture of vehicles used by unlicensed drivers. The state has a critical interest in enforcing its traffic laws and in keeping unlicensed drivers from illegally driving. Seizing the vehicles used by unlicensed drivers serves a significant governmental and public interest, namely the protection of the health, safety, and welfare of Californians from the harm of unlicensed drivers, who are involved in a disproportionate number of traffic incidents, and the avoidance of the associated destruction and damage to lives and property.

Sure wish I would have DVR’d the game, so I could spend countless hours compiling clips of the bullshit tatics the Georgia players pulled, starting with Brandon James’ head being nearly twisted off his head by a facemask that occured at least 5 yards after he stepped out of bounds.
Then there’s the Tebow hit 5 seconds after he handed the ball off, then Demps with a facemask full of paw, then Spikes helmet being pulled off, then the too many to count UGA players running their mouths, pushing, etc after nearly every play.
On second thought, I don’t have that much time.
Can’t wait till next year when Brantley will be allowed to pass the ball.
Why, oh why didn’t Urban call a timeout and kick a field goal. 1968 Vince Dooley (that piece of dog shit) would have FINALLY been paid back.

@46: I believe most people are thinking it did happen to Tebow since he got up and had to get his eyes cleared out. Just no cameras. We’ll never know for sure.

It’s just like Gary Danielson slobbering over the SEC and Tebow: it’s embarrassing but you’d run out of breath trying to apologize for all the stupid shit Brandon Spikes and other young men have done over the years. I honestly see no difference between Kiffin and Meyer, except Kiffin will at least come out and say it, Meyer just sends his messages during games, not that he told Spikes to gouge out his eye, but I’m sure he didn’t reprimand him on the sideline, nor would the suspension come if the video clip hadn’t blown up all over the internet.

Do you want the middle linebacker, and leader of the defense, for your favorite team and/or alma mater to have a bit of a nasty streak? Yes.

Winning isn’t good enough for either of them, they both try to publicly humiliate the opponent at their own expense. Richt is too blame for that dance two years ago. This shit doesn’t happen between OU and UT, though alot of the fans would endorse it. I’ve been at the bottom of a lot of piles and I can’t remember anyone intentionally gouging an eye. My old man says that kind of thing happened, but he played in the early 70s when the head slap and clothesline were still legal and he was coached to step on the hands of opposing players. In any event, whether it happens all the time or not, Spikes got caught. Lots of shady stuff happens all the time (I’m planning to steal office supplies THIS VERY DAY) and the guilty go unpunished (let’s hope) but that doesn’t mean those who get caught should similarly go unpunished. You suspend a guy for half-a-game if he’s late to meetings or skipped study table. Trying to intentionally injure an player opposing player has to be worth at least one full game.

Jesus Christ people, you would think Spikes reached in and pulled out an actual eyeball.
The guy didn’t even look like he had been hit in the eye or hurt in any way. Has anyone thought for a second that it was probably more of a hockey “face-wash”? Like he was saying, “tell the rest of your team that if they keep taking cheap shots and poking people in the eye, there is going to be retaliation.” Spikes is a big man, if he wanted to hurt the guy, I think he’d be hurt right now. If he wanted to “blind” the guy, he probably would have come up clutching his eye like Tebow and Spikes did earlier in the game. Quit overreacting because you hate Florida. For $1,000? And all that happens is you stick your hand in my facemask, and I don’t miss a play, and you don’t even cause me to grab my face in pain? This is supposed to be a bad deal for me because…?

El Kabong @ 90:
So, for $1,000, you will rub some spit in my face after I first spit in your face? While nasty, please sign me up!!!!
/Shinebox. Fetch.

El Kabitch, I will do that for $20. It’s happened to me before for free, I might as well get paid. OH NO, I would have to be slightly uncomfortable for five seconds?! Never! I think everyone who is upset about this is just afraid that it will somehow happen to them vicariously, because that is how awesomely savage Mr. Spikes really is.

DHC, I think that all this kvetching is a stalling technique. I think theyre trying to cover up the fact that they misplaced the shinebox.

It bears repeating, NOBODY does ‘bitter’ like Georgia.
That shinebox isn’t going to find itself, fellas. Suggest you gget to steppin’.

- - I think ND fans are more ‘bitter’ and more delusional than UGA fans. I think they made one of those “Real Men of Genius” beer commercials about ND fans.

Does no one else think DHC’s incessant demands to UGA fans to “go get your shinebox” as fucking stupid as me?
A. It’s still no funnier even after repeating it three times. Plus it really relegates you to message board moron status.
B. It’s seriously dated. I mean, it’s a line from Goodfellas. It’s a great movie but it came out in 1990. Seriously, find some new material, man.
C. Finally, you seem to be using it wrong anyway. In the movie, Billy Batts is busting Tommy DeVito’s balls, just kidding around with him talking about how he used to be able to shine shoes really well as a kid. Tommy DeVito gets pissed and says he doesn’t shine any more and so on and evenutally kills Batts when he says “go home and get your fucking shinebox” as a final insult to him. In the scenario you present, wouldn’t Billy Batts be Georgia and Tommy DeVito be Florida since Florida used to be Georgia’s “shineboy” back in the day? Now of course Florida doesn’t shine any more, correct?

still don’t understand the fuss on either side. Spikes got caught pulling a bush-league stunt. don’t see how that doesn’t cross the line into thuggishness, i.e. something you’re embarrassed to see on the team you cheer for. nor should this incident deflect from Georgia’s crappy game, crappy season, and crappy direction of the program.

1/2 Game Vandy Penalty Dept:
Giving Spikes half game off seems like a reward rather than a penalty.
Why waste time, effort and risk of injury against Vandy?

Oh yeah, I’m sure he was just rubbing spit back in his face.
Orson, you’re the winner. I hope you have a keyboard in braille. It would be a shame to see such a promising career ended on something so stupid as people defending Brandon Spikes’ action in the game, instead of saying, “Wow, that was dumb on his part. He shouldn’t have done that.”

I vote for Spikes being suspended for the SECCG. Can I get a second? And suspend Tim Tebow, his roommate/life partner, and a random fast black dude.
by Mr.Pelican Pants on Nov 2, 2009 7:29 PM EST reply actions
All you stupid Meyer cocksmokers are missing the point….By him only giving Spikes a half-game suspension (and the SEC agreeing with it), he and Mike Slive have virtually guaranteed blood-shed in next year’s game. Spikes will be long gone, but Ealey will be there and have the rest of the Dawgs ready. We have Idaho State next year following the WLOCP, so none of the players are gonna give a damn about missing a half. Next year, when the eye-gouge is being returned, I want to hear absolutely no bitching coming from the gators here.

I feel like I lurk around here on a fairly regular basis. I see the same names pop up in the reply sections, I get to know what to expect from one poster or another. And of course there are always new people and anonymous people to keep me from expecting everything. Nonetheless (and if I missed this in the past, I apologize), I had no idea that Daniel Day Lewis was a Dawg. And to think, to this point we’d been hanging our hats on that blonde lady on 20/20 or whatever news-o-tainment program it was… I guess I’m kind of glad that Spikes fondled Ealey now.
by Sparrow on Nov 2, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply actions
If the refs had seen this there would’ve been a 15 yard penalty. Possibly ejection and suspension for the first half of the next game. Since they didn’t see it he should be punished more?
There are actually rules governing in-game misbehavior and corresponding punishment. Some here want to get torches and pitchforks…rules be damned.

….Spikes gets a half game for brushing grass off some puppy’s cheek.
FUCK YOU MIKE GOLIC, and rest of you MUTHA FUCKING IDIOTS….precedence was set in 2003 by Jim Tressel and the Big 10….
Ohio State Buckeyes linebacker Robert Reynolds chokes Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Jim Sorgi, injuring Sorgi’s trachea, after the play had been whistled dead. Sorgi was unable to play for the remainder of the game, struggling to breathe and unable to speak.
Midway through the third quarter, Sorgi scrambled for an eight-yard gain before being brought down by a convergence of OSU tacklers. After the play was called dead, Reynolds crushed Sorgi’s throat with his hand as Sorgi lay on his back. Sorgi’s vocal cords were bruised, he had a hard time breathing, and he was unable to speak. He would not return to the game. Reynolds was not whistled for a foul. The Badgers came back to win the game.
After the game, Big Ten commissioner James Delany commented, "(Reynolds’ actions) have no place in our game." Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said "Robert’s conduct was totally unacceptable and has no place in intercollegiate athletics." Ohio State suspended Reynolds for one game and Reynolds issued a public apology

Here is what I have gathered from this comments on this post
Florida fans – It’s just another case of THE MAN keepin’ us down! That Corch Meyer is harsh!
Georgia fans – Wait til we get even next year! They should have kicked him out of the SEC! Sieze him!

@ Sparrow…
I’m not a dawg, simply a college football fan. If you would have read the impostor DDL’s post, it was obviously an underhanded reference to my last movie, “There Will Be Blood.”
If I was a dawg, I would undoubtedly bow out to Newman from Seinfeld as the best actor to graduate from UGA.
Thanks and continue,

Is there any chance all of this ruckus means an end to the unrelenting, ad nauseum,

El Kabong obviously has reading comprehension problems. Here, let me say this for you: Wow, that was dumb on his part. He shouldn’t have done that. We never said he should have. We aren’t condoning it. We don’t want it to happen to Florida players, Georgia players, or even FSU players (ok, maybe Dockett). The point is that the outrage is ridiculous. Even if he had been caught in game, he might have not even gotten the suspension. Prob a personal foul, and possibly an ejection. When we say “this type of thing happens all the time”, we don’t mean he shouldn’t be punished at all. People roll stop signs all the time, and when they get caught, they get a ticket, not 30 days in jail. If you think that half a game against Vandy does not matter to Spikes, I think you would be very wrong. He only has a few games left to increase his draft stock, and what better way to do that than by padding some stats against a crappy team. It might not matter to Meyer, but I can almost guarantee you that it means something to Spikes.

What should have UGa fans in an outrage is that this is being handled through whining. There are ways to properly handle this type of behaviour from opposing teams.
Richt doesn’t seem to understand. Maybe if you had hired Hugh Nall before the season……

Ok, so I want the opinion of the Gators fans here.
For the sake of argument, lets say that Spikes attempted eye gouge and Marcus Vick’s stomping on the knee of a defensive lineman were both essentially the same risk of permanent injury.
Spikes was suspended for a half against a lightweight. Vick was thrown off the team.
Which coach was right?
