While should the ACC commish apologize for GT and Duke being good? In 1989, Duke (with the OBC) won the ACC title. The next year GT won the ACC/MNC. So its just a 20 year flashback. IMO, conferences which have members that never win are weak conferences. A Vandy-MSU SECCG would be good for football. That said, Im more likely to watch a Cincy-TCU tile game than a Texas-Alabama one.

When reached for comment, Pete Carroll said, “The game was a disappointment, but my naughty nurse costume went over great! Life is good!!!”

This is not a joke: Georgia Tech will have more trouble beating Duke than Georgia. Could the SEC please issue an apology for that?

3 – Not really. Vandy more than made up for any lackadaisical UGA performance.
by cantcatchuf on Nov 1, 2009 12:34 PM EST reply actions
Lets just say that rumor about UGA and Charlie Strong are true, does Georgia one up everybody in the mercenary SEC by hiring coordinators away from other SEC schools? Can anyone imagine the heights this rivalry would achieve if it was Charlie vs. Urban?
by ShaneTCU on Nov 1, 2009 12:47 PM EST reply actions
Hmm. If Charlie Strong goes to Georgia the Florida players are really going to need the shields on their helmets. oOr is ti tha the Georgia players will need such. Perhaps we’re being unfair. I am sure they they “teach” no such thing.

The last time USC played in Autzen stadium vs the Ducks (2007), Mr. Carroll had no problem expressing himself.
He was considerably more restrained last night in public. We appreciated that.

Sorry, should have added (as I gave the wrong impression) that that particular

Robot-arm-zombie Chris Todd had a pretty good day yesterday. He almost did better than the last three games combined…
by Philip on Nov 1, 2009 1:25 PM EST reply actions
Auburn is like that movie Surrogate, in which Chris Todd is controlled by a different person every week, the first couple of games being Archie Manning, and then the last three were Crompton (who was pimped to the highest bidder to raise funds to pay Monte his retention bonus), and then yesterday was Malzahn’s old buddy Mitch Mustain, who figured there was no point in going to Eugene. Surprisingly Brandon Cox, Kodi Burns, and Jason Campbell were all politely declined.

@1: This isn’t a real magazine cover, so the ACC commissioner isn’t really going to apologize. It’s funny.

Bad news for ESPN: A USC-Notre Dame rematch in the BCS Championship game is out of reach
Good news for ESPN: A USC-Notre Dame rematch in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia is not only within reach, but nearly a month sooner than that other game would have been.

I love that dig at Jim Tressel. I thought that NMSU +44 was a lock also. Who knew Tressel would go for beating that big a spread?

….all this eye gouging talk is really quite humorous, especially since the player who was “gouged” didn’t have any eye problems at all when this occured…..but Tebow did earlier in the game.
Georgia’s manufactured “chippy-ness” was also quite humorous….but not as much as that curb stomping.
….anyone remember who that linebacker was that choked the QB so badly in the pile that he had to leave the game and didn’t return. This occured years ago, and I think it was an Ohio State player but might be mistaken. Anyone?

interesting how there’s NO VIDEO of this incident anywhere to be found online.. Too bad, it was quite “impressive”…

@ 4. You, and a lot of the more worry-wartish bee fans seem not to realize that a football game has four quarters. Losing by 25 is not exactly upholding conference honor, especially when you give up almost 4(!) times your defense’s season average in points. Oh, and 600 yards of offense, 400 on the ground. Way to represent, ’Dores.

18 – Its Vandy. V-a-n-d-e-r-b-i-l-t. Imagine if UF or Alabama were losing to Duke (in a normal year) at halftime. The ACC glee would be unimaginable.
My only point was that it is silly for anyone to act like GT owns the SEC because they beat Vandy and Miss State. ESPN’s Heather Dinich of the ACC blog says “Georgia Tech made its case tonight for the country’s best one-loss team.” ….really? The team that struggled to score ten on Army made a mockery of your defense.
by cantcatchuf on Nov 1, 2009 6:14 PM EST reply actions
@25: You’re kidding, right? She actually wrote that? I guess she has an early bed time and missed a certain Pacific Northwest team play. Chances are she is worried about keeping her job in these tough economic times so if she has to write some pretty ridiculous things in order to make sure that the mortgage payments keep being made on time, so be it. Journalistic credibility doesn’t pay the bills!

@29….were you not paying attention when Tech played FSU???….our defense is young and terrible.
We’re the best one loss team b/c when we get the ball in the 2nd half, you don’t get it back until you’re down 21. Now in the first half, you’ve got plenty of time to run up and down the field willy nilly.
Score as much as you want, and we’ll probably score with you.
In the 2nd half, punt and you will lose.

for reference, it was tied at half-time 28-all [after GT was up 28-14 with 6 minutes to go in the half]
Vandy led by a FG for 10 minutes of the 3rd quarter after an opening drive FG and a GT fumble on the Vandy 4
It would seem that the GT defense allowed 100-190 more yards and an average of 22 more points than SEC defenses to Vandy
On the other hand, GT’s offense gained 170-270 more yards and an average of 23.5 more points than SEC offenses to Vandy
also, if we look at the common opponent data-points (Mississippi State and Virginia Tech) we see at half time:
13-10 in favor of Florida (to be tied 13-13 at 9:32 in the third) [final: 29-19]
28-17 in favor of GT (to be extended to 35-17 at 9:32 in the third) [final: 42-31]
in both cases, the games were in Starkville btw
on the other hand….
VT up 17-16 against Alabama at the half [finishes 34-24 bama obviously]
GT up 7-3 against VT at the half [finishes 28-23]
Trying to use Vandy only in transitivity arguments doesn’t really work because the offensive scheme at GT makes transitivity near impossible (see: wins of 38-7 vs MSU and 45-42 vs UGA last year compared to 34-24 win vs MSU and 58-28 loss vs UGA for LSU that led to that 38-3 result for LSU in the Peach Bowl)
I think no Tech fan would argue with the argument that the GT defense and kick coverage are terrible, but that’s clearly only around half of the game.

I don’t know who Cocky Scar is, but I know a come-on when I see one… and a lame one at that… Christ, my mom can put a drop shadow on text… try applauding something witty she wrote next time, you know, after your 9th grade choir practice.
As for the UGA/FL hate fest in the previous post (no point in replying there, that thread is past its freshness date), Florida fans calling UGA fans obnoxious is laughable. Seriously. This is from a disinterested Bama fan.
Yes, the “woof woof woof” is annoying, but in comparison to the rare bouquet of douchebaggery that wafts over Benny Hill Griffith Stadium, it’s a miniature terrier nipping at your heels. The last time I was in G’ville, not only were the offenders 5’1 girls, they were 15/16ish (admittedly had an 8yr old flick me off at LSU, but hey, it’s LSU). Being the good little representative of my school, I did not bash them upside the head with my trombone, as much as it might have helped adjust their attitude in a positive manner that might have helped them avoid being slapped by their “employer” in the future.
Seeing as that was ’99, it worked out nicely for me. However, as I turned back to share my feelings after the OT, they and the 40yr old sugar daddy they were with had run off.
Florida fans destroy the obnoxious meter. At least Tennessee fans have the sense to keep their mouths shut and stare in brooding silence until after the game is over.
I have no idea where all this vitriol is coming from… especially towards Cocky Scar… reading all this WLOCP hate is a bad influnce…

It never ceases to amaze me that folks who voluntarily visit a free – and in the case of EDSBS, highly entertaining – blog will show no shame as they display their unfounded sense of entitlement when they either disagree or don’t like the joke.
But, it is kind of fun to see those whose ACC/THEOHIOSTATEUNIVERSITY/etc. sensibilities get trampled respond.
Carry on.

This Fifteen-year-old female Bama fan was talking trash to me in Gainesville in ’91, but since we won that year (35-0!!!!), it worked out pretty well in my favor. Now nearly twenty years later I get to talk trash about it on the internet!!!!!!!!

@ Peterpumpkinhead – i was a graphic design major… drop shadows and lens flares aren’t “good design,” but for some reason clients still ask for that shit cause it is flashy and hip… and for some reason major publications (sports mags in particular) still do that type of stuff… So, my comments were in jest… sarcasm doesn’t really translate very well in type so i won’t say that you are an idiot for taking me seriously… but there was no need to bring Christ into situation, you aren’t Tebow…
And since you weren’t smelling what i was stepping in with my comment, let me break it down for you: i was making a jab at sporting news publications for their shitty design techniques by making a sarcastic comment about Holly’s overall piece of work… i know that she probably isn’t being serious with it, so i don’t think she would take the criticism to heart… did that clarify the situation for you?
damn, didn’t know you had to spoon feed bama fans… (that was a joke to because i know some fairly smart bama grads)

only in the SEC could someone hold a grudge like this for a decade over a 15 year old girl’s actions.
it never ceases to amaze me when a visiting team’s fans complain about the home team’s. Am I really supposed to be held accountable for the actions of every 15 year old girl in Alachua County because I went to UF? same thing goes for any other large SEC school. at some point, you need to recognize that not everybody in the 80k plus seat stadium are Alums (or in this case future alums).
I went to Ole Miss-UF in 2002. I had a bottle of jack thrown at my head, and we lost the game. it was still one of the top 10 weekends of my life.

You know the sad thing is, I was sober when I wrote that.
Cocky Scar, you’re right, I missed the sarcasm, and it makes much more sense now.
As for the people not getting the story about the Florida girls, go back and read the comments from the previous post between someone who claims to be a 5’1" Florida chick who was mortally harassed by Georgia fans and you’ll get my point. And it’s only one example, I could point to literally dozens over the years. It’s like LSU fans being intoxicated from 7am on during gamedays. Some stereotypes exist for a reason.

@41 Speaking as a representative of aforementioned school spirit organization whose uniforms were not made of wool and who is typing this on his 2-year girlfriend’s bed as she is stepping out of the shower and drying off with a towel in front of me…Donny, you appear to be out of your element.
Band rage is organized rage, which is something to take under advisement. We can make an act of assault look like an instrument malfunction and no one will care. :)
