IT’S GROUNDHOG DAY

I have been stabbed by Texas, shot by Florida, poisoned by LSU, frozen by USC, hung, electrocuted, and burned by the media…and every morning I wake up without a scratch on me, not a dent in the fender… I am an immortal.
(See Chris’s post on Sweatervest at Doc Saturday. Jeremiad-y in its intensity, cold science in its accuracy.)

Don’t forget Penn State’s win last year, too.
Not that I take delicious schadenfreude in seeing tOSU beaten, again and again, by any quality opponent that dares show its face…

Coach the Coach Dept:
Serena Williams needs to go to Columbus (on her suspension time) and show Tressel how to show some fire on a big stage. Tressell being on “accountant” mode is not good for the troops when facing opponents with a pulse.

This is every bit as great as Chris Brown’s amazing take-down on Doc Saturday. Somehow Freek gets the same point across with a couple .gif’s. Bravo.

Excellent as always freak, but could tOSU do any better than Tressell? Who would they replace him with that could do better?
I mean, it’s Ohio. I give Tressel love for bringing in out of state talent to…..Ohio?!

I know this is the only good that comes from my Buckeyes losing.

Does Tressel call his own plays? If so, it’s like a lawyer defending himself.
Also, Chris’ explanation of containment plays is exactly how Tejas beat him last year – the safety blitzed & there was no one left to cover Cosby on the quick slant.

It’s a shame I couldn’t see the USC/tOSU game, being at the longest game on earth (UGA/USC-East). However, the pictures they’ve got up over at Doc Saturday’s just tell a horrible story. All I heard from tailgaters walking from the stadium was how great a game I’d just missed (given the one I saw, I’m happy to say I won in the end), but that’s just sad. I mean, that single picture of the uncovered slot receiver just makes my brain hurt. If Chris’ right, and that occurred a number of times, watching tOSU shoot itself in the foot all game would have been worse than watching Michael Scott in the Office, which just makes my heart hurt for idiots everywhere.

Counter Trap says:
Excellent analysis at the link. Leaving the slot receiver uncovered also goes by another name: Coach’s Contempt. Think Bama’s all-up against Miami or the fifty examples soon to be on display in the Meyer/Kiffin environs this weekend.
And it’s not just Tressel’s offense, folks. The defensive game plan against Florida for all the beans three years back was a whole different level of risk aversion. I kept expecting the OSU defense to assume the fetal position en masse.
As for “Who could do better?” I can think of a sackful of names right off the top of my head. The bar is set high at the Ohio States of the world–no, they can’t win them all, but they should win them all occasionally.

Dan says:
As a Michigan fan, I’ll warn the Buckeyes to be wary of Carr-esque symptons in their coach. You know, the one great coach with National Championship wins, undefeated seasons and the like who suddenly seems unable to win a bowl. It starts out so simple, that Bowl Drought, then quality OOC teams (such as Oregon) beat you when you schedule home and homes with them. Then a few other schools in the Big Ten start to figure you out and suddenly you’re not beating Iowa by the margins you used to, then bam one day App State is doing a victory dance at midfield. All because the coach, who still recruits top talent, hasn’t changed the playbook for ten years. Act now and vaccinate against the disease.
Also please give some serious though to rehiring Cooper. Or maybe consider John L. Smith.
Your loving conference mates from the north,
Michigan

Can we all just agree that tOSU s no longer an elite program? They rule a conference, the Big 10, which is obviously a second division league. Why they get voted Top 10 pre-season every year is beyond me.
Ohio State reminds me of Nebraska in the late 80s/early 90s. Dominated the Big 8, then got punked every January by Miami/Florida St. etc. It wasn’t until Nebraska started recruiting speed from places like Florida and California did the Huskers win their 3 titles in the Nineties.

@10, wait, wait…after the 18-15 loss to USC, NOW you want to agree OSU is not elite? It is clear that a whole world of shit is “beyond you”.
If OSU now reminds you of Nebraska in the late 80’s/early 90’s, are you predicting a dynasty for OSU in the next few years? Including an unlubricated ass-raping of Florida and Florida St? Please understand that OSU’s problem is not what state’s they recruit in, they are still recruiting top talent. It is the pants-shitting play calling keeping them in the stone age.

nope, tOSU is just a bandwagon program like bama was for a few years. every year they get a preseason top 10 reacharoundranking only to end up with 4-5 loses. After about 4 years the preposters got the message and left bama out of the top 25 and made them ‘gasp’ earn it

You know what’s really gonna piss you off……………….next year OSU get’s the shit off their back and guess who the “big” OOC opponent is…………the Hurricanes. I have to say, if I’ve had to put up with this bullshit for 3 and 1/2 years just so we can punk the Hurricons again, well, it might have just been worth it.

factchecker says:
80 of 98 players on tOSU are from Ohio, and Ohio is annually the 4th strongest state for recruiting (#1Cal, #2Florida, #3Texas, #4Ohio, #5Pa).
States with the most NFL players: #1Cal, #2Texas, #3Florida, #4Georgia, #5Ohio.
Excerpt from USA Today:
And while less than 4% of the U.S. population lives in Ohio, 15% of college football’s major-conference head coaches were born there. 14 of the last 18 teams to make it to the national championship game had head coaches with Ohio connections.

I think tOSU is only one step away from being elite; Terrelle Pryor being able to throw the ball accurately when needed. I was impressed by their defense. It was a close game and SC made the plays on their last drive.

The uncovered receiver bit happened more than once. The first time I saw it I thought to myself “whoops, here comes a cheap TD, that’s what happens when USC loses too much talent on D in one year”. I think the uncovered guy was even the wideout (not the slot receiver) when I noticed it. It would have been a pitch and catch TD, he would have been even more open than the GT fake FG reception from last week.

I’m boggled at all the hatred Tressel and tOSU get compared to even worse results for other teams, like say Oklahoma.
Is losing to USC really worse than losing to BYU? And how has Stoops been doing against Texas and in BCS games lately?

Gen. Stoopnagle says:
oc phil: I think you’re right. I’ve actually started to warm up to tOSU in a sort of “hey-maybe-they’re-just-like-us” sort of way. (ARP). But the OU love?
Why is it that tOSU and OU are *always* getting the benefit of the doubt? I can fathom it where the Buckeyes are concerned because while they might not win the so-called big games, at least those games aren’t getting dropped to WAC and MWC teams.
And still Oklahoma gets the benefit of doubt to get the nod over Texas or whomever? Makes no sense.
