MEYER'S SI COVER, IMPROVED
Urban Meyer wasn't pleased with his SI cover, mostly because they used the equivalent of the "high school yearbook leather jacket photo" on him. This version, however, is much improved. (click for beeg)

Fans who wished their team mattered enough to be cursed…check

zzgator,
It’s just a joke. It’s not as if there is a real curse. Like wikipedia says:
“The most common explanation for the perceived effect is that athletes are generally featured on the cover at the pinnacle of their careers, so future performance is likely to be less impressive by comparison. This decline in performance would then be perceived as being related to, or even possibly caused by, the appearance on the magazine cover.”
So, the gators aren’t cursed. It’s just that Meyer’s future performance is likely to be less impressive by comparison. (See: Moreno, Knowshon, 2008).

And somehow you didn’t get that mine was a joke as well?

No, I know it was. Just engaging in a little pre-season smack talk.

This could turn flamey very quickly, since I’m focusing on a small bit of Glennon’s post, but, Knowshon was on the cover of ESPN The Magazine last year, not SI. Unless you count the one also featuring Stafford and Ellerbe. Knowshon and Stafford both had record-worthy years and improved upon their 2008 numbers.
My understanding was that the cover curse applied more to team performance rather than individual. In which case it’d be mostly accurate, except that Florida also had a cover last year…

And by their 2008 numbers, I meant 2007. I guess I jinxed myself with the name.

Hmmmm…a possible Meyer cover jinx…this seems all too ripe for a new LSUFreek installment.

I think the proportion of the curse is directly related to the doucheiness of the pose/picture; but since this one is super cool, you’re probably ok….

@ 13
Come on, man. Nothing says, “class,” like Meyer’s member’s only jackets, his downright odd interest in leather clothing, and his choice of plastic timepieces that Nike makes for $2 and charges idiots $50 for. The sunglasses surely follow suit.
The guy can flat out coach, and I guess when you spend most of your time in Ohio or Michigan or wherever and move to Florida you fit right in regarding apparell, but when you are making over $4MM a year, just maybe think about picking up a Breitling or a Patek Phillipe or even a Rolex like the masses? Just a thought…

Lane in the sunglasses reflection is the piece de resistance. My only hope is that when I get my copy in the mail that he is actually in the reflection. Fingers and toes crossed.

you really think on a SEC preview, regional cover that also had lane kitten, houston nutt and nick saban versions are going to invoke the curse?
That’s like saying this cover invoked a curse..

Dear Urb,
I approve of the “Sunglasses pulled down on the nose” pose from the 80’s.

So what does that make Saban? Guido, the Killer Pimp?
by Mr. Pelican Pants on Aug 11, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The effect in that photo would only be complete with a neon yellow “NO FEAR” logo somewhere on Meyer’s shirt.

Of course it is photoshopped. It was made by a poster at our board.
We have a good one of Saban as well.
