MUSTACHE WEDNESDAY: RICHARD PRYOR
We’re having a bit of a moment: tired beyond all belief due to staying up for the better part of two days for the Badwater, exhausted from the effort of staying away from the tables in Vegas, then frazzled by working an East Coast day on West Coast time…we need something, some inspiration, just something to get to the end of the day–
–oh, fuck yes. That will do quite nicely. After the jump, Pryor brilliantly addresses the issue of destroying your own property.

The fact that Dane Cook claims to have the same profession as this man makes me want to pull a Lloyd Carr on a bucket full of kittens.

And with that, West Virginia fans received all the justification they need.

5 minutes of Richard Pryor will cure what ails ya. I don’t know if the rest of y’all are PBS nerds, but recently they re-aired a fantastic series called “Make ‘Em Laugh” that’s all about the history of comedy in America. It will give you a real appreciation for the fearlessness and humanity running through guys like Richard Pryor. That’s in addition to being essentially a highlight reel of some of the funniest things ever said. I think you can get it on Netflix. Worth your time.

The funniest moments in the history of American comedy are when Pryor does his Mudbone character. It will give you stomach cramps from laughing.

I agree, Trap. And the best part is, his mustache seems to be such a big part of Mudbone’s diction.

I started sneaking the Richard Pryor albums in the fifth grade. It shoaped most of my social interactions. This explains a lot. ” I worked five years in a row when I was in the joint.”

I’m sure Richard is looking down and saying, “Happy Mustache Wednesday, Motherfuckers! And try not to set your ’stache on fire.”

If you want a measure of the man’s influence on comedy, think back to the best western comedy ever written – Blazing Saddles – and realize that every one of the lines for Clevon Little was written by Richard Pryor. He was actually was Mel’s first choice for ‘Sheriff Bart’, but the studio heads said ‘no’ due to his noteriety. While Cleavon Little’s performance was superb, I’ve always wondered how it would have been with Richard in the role.
NOT included in the film is Sheriff Bart’s response to Madeline Kahn’s “It’s Twue, it’s Twue!!!
” line. Reportably it was Sheriff Bart’s voice saying “Uh, that’s my ARM you’re sucking…”.
Classic. A thousand Gin and Tonics to the man.
