The awesomest/most otherworldly football commentary I ever heard was on a drive back from Morgantown, WV to my home near Frederick, MD. The Frostburg State (MD) team was playing somewhere up in NY state, and the obviously substance-impaired AV nerds were ready at the mike for the kickoff, broadcast by the nearby college radio statiion (commentary is from memory):

“And here’s the kickoff to [New York team]… [pause] um… er… [long LONG silence]… Well, THAT’s not good. Touchdown [New York team].”

I have lost track of how many people thought Nile Kinnick was going to be President someday. I see no reason to think he wouldn’t have done it, nor that he wouldn’t have had the same success as he had in everything else he chose to undertake.

This is why we watch, folks.

Landshark, I’m a stone’s throw away from Yo-Hi (Nile C. Kinnick High School, on the Yokosuka Naval Base here in Japan) as I type this from the food court. I’m Army, not Navy, and not stationed here, but reading this and viewing while here made me smile. Kinnick’s quite a story, and I can even forgive him for running all over my Irish. Great to see.

For those not familiar, #24 for Iowa is Nile Kinnick. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1939.

My Buick was the fourth on the left, the brown one next the black one. Ironically, I wore a black cashmere overcoat and wouldn’t you know it, the chap parked next to me wore a brown camel hair overcoat. We had quite a laugh that day. We lit a couple of Lucky Strike and the gal he was with offered to blow me. Whoa, those were the days.
