JUST BEAUTIFUL, REALLY: IOWA/ND 1939

--Iowa, Notre Dame, 1939, Nile Kinnick goes off.

--No sound, but we'll fill in for you: harumphharumphISAYTHEREGOODSHOWharumphharumphYAAAAAYYYY. Fill in any blanks with thumping oompa tubas and bass drums.

--It's chilling to think how many people on the field were killed in World War II. One was Kinnick.

The life of Nile Kinnick was far too short. Even Buckeyes hold him in the highest regard.

The first thing that came to mind was Vince Lombardi yelling, “What the hell is going on out there? Everyone grabbing!” BTW, wouldn’t it be cool if college football had a Throwback Saturday, where everyone in college football, from the players, coaches, refs and fans, all mimicked a great era like the 30s, 40s, or 50s (minus the segregated teams, of course.)? It would be great to see fans in trenchcoats and hats, and women in dresses.

Hey, no sound is better than Tom Hammond.

Easily the coolest thing I’ve seen all day. Thank you Orson and thank you BHGP.

My Buick was the fourth on the left, the brown one next the black one. Ironically, I wore a black cashmere overcoat and wouldn’t you know it, the chap parked next to me wore a brown camel hair overcoat. We had quite a laugh that day. We lit a couple of Lucky Strike and the gal he was with offered to blow me. Whoa, those were the days.

@#1, I think all of us in the Big Ten hold Mr. Kinnick in the highest regard.

Nile Kinnick didn’t die in WW2. He just had his Presidency cut short.

Always nice to see my high school (or at least its namesake) get some quality affection.

For those not familiar, #24 for Iowa is Nile Kinnick. He won the Heisman Trophy in 1939.

Wow! Depression era football! Some of those guys really did have “crazy legs” back then. There were some nice rugby tackles too!

Iowa punted so many times on third down that I started wondering if Rick Neuheisel was their coach.

Landshark, I’m a stone’s throw away from Yo-Hi (Nile C. Kinnick High School, on the Yokosuka Naval Base here in Japan) as I type this from the food court. I’m Army, not Navy, and not stationed here, but reading this and viewing while here made me smile. Kinnick’s quite a story, and I can even forgive him for running all over my Irish. Great to see.

NBC should look into getting the announcers from this game to replace Tom Hammond and Pat Hayden. They’d be a marked improvement.

I have lost track of how many people thought Nile Kinnick was going to be President someday. I see no reason to think he wouldn’t have done it, nor that he wouldn’t have had the same success as he had in everything else he chose to undertake.

This is why we watch, folks.

@2 – You want to see women in dresses? Go to an SEC game.

The awesomest/most otherworldly football commentary I ever heard was on a drive back from Morgantown, WV to my home near Frederick, MD. The Frostburg State (MD) team was playing somewhere up in NY state, and the obviously substance-impaired AV nerds were ready at the mike for the kickoff, broadcast by the nearby college radio statiion (commentary is from memory):

“And here’s the kickoff to [New York team]… [pause] um… er… [long LONG silence]… Well, THAT’s not good. Touchdown [New York team].”

Thank god for the modern passing game and integration. How fucking boring watching a bunch of slow white guys move the ball 2 yards every play.
