That’s a genius twitter stat. There are only 4 Pac-10 states (that would be 8% for you, Andy). I guess if the Pac signs 16% of BCS players then the Pac-10 is better than the SEC. No room for argument. Numbers prove it. Pac-10 should win the next 4 MNC since it has signed twice the number of states in its conference.

I didn’t read every detail in the Tuscaloosa News article, but they need to throw out the all time bowl appearances. From roughly 1920 – 1949 the Big Ten did not allow teams to go to bowl games (Michigan didn’t participate in a bowl from 1902 – 1948. In addition, once the Big Ten allowed teams to go to bowl games, the same team was not allowed to go to the Rose bowl 2 years in a row. Alabama on the other hand was eligible to go to bowl games every year it wasn’t on probation – hence the only reason they have the all-time bowl appearances record…I always chuckle when I see that stat. There also needs to be a penalty factor in their equation for NCAA infractions.

I think it’s interesting that the Opelika-Auburn News rated college football’s best teams last year. They weighted the previous 6 years and 1957 at 80 percent. Auburn still finished 7th best in the SEC.

The twitter numbers aren’t all that amazing or exciting. When looking at BCS conference signees, realize that while 33.8% may be from SEC country, SEC states have 27.7% of all BCS schools(18). Going a little further, 56.9% of BCS schools are in or border an SEC state.

The “modern era’ of college football goes back to the 1920s in Tuscaloosa (a) because football in 1929 so resembles football since about, say, 1967 or (b) 1925 happens to be when UAT won its first Rose Bowl.
