MUSTACHE WEDNESDAY: GORDON LIGHTFOOT
Today's Mustache: the very grizzled Gordon Lightfoot, seen here with the immortal 'stache/dark aviators combo essential for all manbears from 1978-1982.
Cuddles went to see Gordon Lightfoot two years ago, and said that "he wasn't as familiar with Mr. Lightfoot's catalog as he should have been" before sitting down to watch him for two hours. Well, who besides the most devoted Canadian folk-rock fan is?
And you're damn right "Sundown" is after the jump.

I’m a big “If You Could Read My Mind” guy, as everyone who has only heard one Gordon Lightfoot song but wants to join the conversation probably is.

I actually heard “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on the radio over the weekend.

Woohoo! Cancon in two of today’s posts. Keep it up Orson and you might qualify for some cash from the Canadian government’s web fund.

Not to mention that Mr. Lightfoot is one of the most notorious of drinkenest mofo’s out there. Rumors are that he sobered up (some, if anything) but legends abound about complete blackout-drunk performances back in the day. That earns cool points right there! Add a mustache and boom goes the dynamite!

Never forget “Care Free Highway”… saw GL two years ago and rocked for a guy in his 60s… and BTW, if you take a female friend to this concert and she is over the age of 30… YOU WILL GET LUCKY..
but of course, few songs hit as hard as Sundown — I can see her lying back in her satin dress, in a room where you do what you don’t confess…"
That’s it, calling GF taking afternoon off….
PEACE OUT PEOPLE…

Gordon is a good choice. It takes a real man to sing “Pussywillows, Cat-Tails” and not sound completely gay.

Gord’s Gold rests near the top of my collection of “greatest hits” albums. All his songs translate perfectly to bluegrass, a quality that he shares with Dylan and Prine.

Memories of rolling through Grand Rapids, Michigan in my mom’s Aerostar are filling my mind. Goddamn am I glad we moved to Georgia. The pain of attending 10 straight GA/FL games and only winning 2 is nothing compared to the joyless life of an MSU/UofM fan. I am pretty sure The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was actually a prediction about the post-Saban era in East Lansing.

For those who mock Gordon:
My parents said they saved their money for weeks when they were first married in order to afford tickets to see Gordon Lightfoot. He was playing in Cedar Falls, IA.
My parents said that he was completely shitfaced and he couldn’t remember the words to his songs and was mocking the audience when they requested “Carefree Highway.”

He’s touring both New York and Canada this year; and no, the years do not appear to have been kind.
Happy Mustache Wednesday, motherfuckers!

OC – I’m with ya. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald is…strong…to quite strong.

Holy @ #7…I second your posit that any woman over thirty loves when sung up with GL…at least the ones who were with me hearing it make it happen…I don’t have the ego to think it was all my innate charm…oh, and two of them were georgia dawgs, so there…

Lightfoot’s great, but there is a reason they call him “Four-Chord Gord.”

Point of order, please? Those look more like square, gradient pornographer shades, not true teardrop, Ray Ban, old school southern Sheriff “You in a heap o’ trouble, boy…” aviators…Ja?

Ruffled shirt under the tux (even poking out of the sleeves!) makes the look complete.

I have many many hours listening to Gord’s Gold under my belt, which is as described above, except that it
doesn’t have Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which is his best song, but that line from Sundown is one of
the greatest in songwriting.

I beg to differ on the greatest line from Gord, “But still I won’t deny or mistreat you, baby if you let me have my way.”
It should be quoted directly on the list of Man Rules.

This was when Gord still had his teeth. He’s had a upper plate for quite some time now and it has effected his singing. He sounds more nasally now, whereas before he sang with a slight lisp.
