UGA TO HAVE SPRING GAME ON ESPN

Congrats to Georgia for getting the instant recruiting bump of getting your spring game on ESPN. Avoid trying to one-up Florida's sun-dappled extravaganza complete with sprinting contests, etc., and just point the camera at the stands. At the girls. Not the white kids in blackface.

THAT'S RACIST!!!

To combat these harmful stereotypes, very white us will be the ones handing out fried chicken at a tailgate at the game, partially because of this post, and mostly because fried chicken is really fucking good.

Hmmm…soul food. Or, as we call it where I come from — food.

What? No watermelon?

When one’s school colors are red and black, one would probably expect black face paint at some point.

(Did I just defend U(sic)GA? I need to go take another shower)

If eating southern fried chicken is wrong, I dont want to be right…

You mean Florida’s carnival? All that was missing was the yak lady and a tilt-a-whirl.

They mentioned this prior to the season, but ESPN said that how the season played out would have a lot to do with whether they would cover it. I thought that meant SEC and/or NC, but apparently disappointment = ratings.

by Silver Britches on Jan 23, 2009 2:35 PM EST reply actions

The tilt-a-whirl was fun until Ronnie Wilson shot it to pieces because he was threatened by the lights and loud noises.

Al Jolson is not impressed, he would slap yo’ mammy….U Crackas be Trippin’…..I hear Georgias having a Blackout…..from drankin’’’wooooooo….I wish Alabama could do a version of the Blackout and call it the “Bloodbath” and have a cool mascot bark like “ARP ARP ARP”, but the trumpety sound an elephant makes, is kinda hard to spell….
And nothing beats Harts Fried Chicken, its the greasiest…..and nothing washes it down better than a 40 oz of a Colt .45 Malt Liqura, or Mo’Fuggas, take your pick.

Example 2,212 that ESPN hates Nick Saban….we break the record for attendance with 92k fans for a Spring game, and will bust at least that again this year wanting to see how McElroy and Star Jackson are doing, just out of curiosity, and they give it to Georgia, a team without Moreno and Stafford? WTF is that? Hell, why not cover Auburns?-they are the ones who need the most help……..I would have gone with Ole Miss or Tenn, just for the unedited entertainment value of Nutt and or Orgeron…..

by Mr. Pelican Pants on Jan 23, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions

At 8:

I think you just answered your own question. From an appeal standpoint, ESPN probably thinks it’s more intriguing to see how UGA replaces Stafford and Moreno as opposed to Bama replacing Coffee and JPW. It must be about replacing star power, because it’s damn sure not about how they fared in 2008.

It’s not because the media has it out for Saban or Bama. The media starts fondling themselves when Bama gets to about 3-0, so I don’t think that’s it.

by Silver Britches on Jan 23, 2009 3:01 PM EST reply actions

I have to say, I was pretty surprised that this was still on. When they announced the intention prior to last season, it made sense: if UGA didn’t win the NC, then they probably would be a favorite this season, what with Stafford and Moreno returning and Green entering his second season. With the losses we’ve taken, though, it’s just kind of baffling.

I guess the best thing about it (besides recruiting exposure) is that, even with ESPN visiting Athens, we’ll definitely win this time. Hell, break out the Blackout jerseys just for shits and giggles.

Who’s Corso going to pick, red or black?

by The Snake will Drive Again! on Jan 23, 2009 3:13 PM EST reply actions

I never knew fried chicken was a “black” foodstuff until I got to college. I just assumed (I’m pretty sure, correctly) that it was either Southern or universal.

by This Guy on Jan 23, 2009 3:19 PM EST reply actions

What is eluding us at this point is a blackout blackface. None more black. I mean photographs of this guy would be just spectacular.

The WWL’s in for some tough sledding, ratings-wise, what with scheduling against the final round of Tiger’s comeback tour in Augusta.

Hey, you wanna know what they call me at the Church’s Fried Chicken in Bessemer?

“That white dude that eats here.”

by Daywalker trailer park on Jan 23, 2009 4:12 PM EST reply actions

Thanks for the excuse, Techie (@ 3), but I’m pretty sure that’s a red afro wig so, um, er, ah plausible deniability may be a little difficult to maintain.

And to Herb (@ 1): Amen. I may be the whitest white boy in America, and it’s perfectly natural for me to order (or cook) collards and throw a little chopped onion on my black-eyeds. And as for that fried chicken? Yep, but pass the hot sauce, please — I don’t care if it’s Red Rooster, Tabasco, Texas Pete, or whatever. This is not soul food. It’s food.

(sigh) Living in Midtown Atlanta, it’s hard to find good food without someone having thrown a rĂ©moulade or coulis all up in there.

@14 The final round will be on the 12th, and that game is on the 11th. But still, Saturday at the Masters is still pretty popular around those parts. Why does UGA schedule their spring game that weekend? Tiger or no Tiger, that’s what I’ll be watching that weekend.

#16: Head west on Marietta Street to Carver’s Grocery. Eat whatever suit you, but I can vouch that the fried chicken, pot roast, meatloaf, collards, and macaroni and cheese will slap you in face and make you beg for more.

by Ltrain on Jan 23, 2009 6:57 PM EST reply actions

Thanks for the correction, Brian.

However, Woods could render the final round irrelevant this year.

2008 = 6 starts, 4 wins, one 2nd. Second in money.

He may be frighteningly dominant in 2009.

Usually the CBS Masters coverage doesn’t start until 2 or 3, so with the game at 1 no one should miss out on either.

by korndawg on Jan 23, 2009 8:10 PM EST reply actions

NRBQ, If there’s any year where Woods is beatable, I think it’s this year. Especially the Masters, since it’s early in the season, and he’s still not back from injury. I’d be happy take a field bet on the Masters this year.

by Brian O'Blivion on Jan 23, 2009 10:50 PM EST reply actions

this is genius….they have the spring game so you can see what the team would look like before the couple dozen summer arrests and academic dismissals

Don’t they show hotdog eating contests on espn too? I wouldn’t watch that either unless a few UGA coeds were in it. Coeds on campus eat plenty of hot dogs on campus but it usually winds up on porn sites.
