Has USC EVER lost a game?

by elno lewis on Jan 2, 2009 10:53 AM EST reply actions

Yeah, USC usually loses A game, elno—the singular nature being the point. However, for those who do not like the idea that Carroll, Saban, Meyer and Stoops (with the occasional Mack Brown sighting) are about to make the college game their own private club, might I suggest the English Premier League or the Food Network as a new pasttime.

It’s the 1970s again, you only have to sub Meyer for Parseghian (until he leaves UF for ND, sorry Orson). Though one would hope Stoops is not batshit crazy like Switzer.

I have a feeling we’re going to lose one of those coaches— Meyer, Carroll, Stoops— to the NFL in the next week or 2.

All this foolish talk about a split national title would be absent if the WWL (ABC) had the national title game. As it is, they don’t, so they go with what they had. Now they are done. Next week no one will care about USConvicts anyway….

Pete Carroll and his staff outcoached Tom Bradley and Galen Hall.

Joe Paterno had a nice view of the game too. Not that he could see the field from there.

@PW,

I don’t see a fit for any of those three in the NFL openings.

I think USC could beat Oklahoma, I know they cant handle Florida. Alabamas defense would have held them in check, but Bamas offense is lacking in firepower to match up with USC’s defense, where Florida has enough to spare, plus they have Tebow and more speed that USC has ever seen on the field at one time, hell they couldnt handle only 1 quarkback in Jaquizz Rogers, Florida has 4 of them and they are smoother, shiftier and faster…….although I would like to see a Taylor Mays hit on Demps , straight on at full speed and see what happens….

USC plays great in big games. If they had to play next week, look out for the letdown loss (see Oregon state following tOSU win). Lucky for them, the season is over. One has to wonder if in a playoff, where they would have to be mentally up multiple weeks in a row, if they are up to it.

by Crabapple Buck on Jan 2, 2009 12:38 PM EST reply actions

Crabapple buck @ 10 -

I couldn’t agree more. When USC turns it on, they will beat anybody. They turned it on in the 2nd quarter, and coupled with some uncharacteristic PSU mistakes and failure to adapt the defensive game plan quickly enough, it was 31-7 just like that.

By the way, glad to see no Big 10 bashing, especially from the SEC fans. Any of the other top teams (Texas, OU, Florida, Alabama) would have done no better. Sanchez would have shredded OU’s D and Texas’ D, Florida would have kept it a little closer but would have lost by 10+, Bama would have been done by the end of the 1st quarter. When USC wants to play, especially in the Rose Bowl, there’s not another team in the country that can beat them without an absolute perfect game. I hate it, but I’m afraid that’s the reality…

by PSUfanNYC on Jan 2, 2009 12:47 PM EST reply actions

Why do the commentators even bring up a split natiional title, and in the process fan the flames USC hate?

The 2003 AP title was a result of USC being No. 1 in both polls BEFORE they went out and killed Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Those two elements together is what got them the AP title.

It doesn’t matter how great of a performance they put on these days in their bowl game. They were No. 5 before the Rose Bowl, so the AP title will never happen, and everyone knows it.

I’m an USC fan, and believe, like many that they could win the BSC title game. I honestly think they could handle Oklahoma, and if the offense was close to what it was againt Penn St., could make things very interesting against Florida (not saying a win would be sure thing in either circumstance). They really a great team.

But, any honest fan knows that the fuck-up losses have to stop for USC to get another legit chance at a title. Actually, the OSU loss isn’t that bad in retrospect and if another Pac-10 team would have been ranked higher than 15 on game day or ND was ranked at all, I’d argue that USC really should have been in the title game. But, one of that happened. Past years’ UCLA and Stanford losses are completely inexcusable. USC knows they need to stop fucking up the small games to play for the title.

So, every year we get this overreaction on the part of the commentators that USC is playing good enough to win the title. But, that doesn’t really mean that they deserved to play in the title game.

ON another note, USC has to get another non-title game BCS matchup. It’s not their fault that the Pac-10 won’t let the Rose Bowl go and they certainly should try to win their conference. But, it would really be great to see USC in another context. USC-Texas in the Fiesta Bowl, or USC-Alabama in the Sugar Bowl would have been great.

@ PSUfanNYC -

To suggest that UF, Bama, Texas, or OU would have turned out the same result is to imply that PSU is just as good as those same teams. Penn State may have had a good year, but its performance wasn’t on par with that of the other teams you mentioned. And I say this as a person who has nothing but hate in my heart for the four listed teams. Could USCw beat Florida, Bama, Texas or Oklahoma? Maybe. Would it be embarassing? Not a chance.

Rory Sparrow Dept:

#15: You forget that a few years ago USC gave OU a whooping worse than it gave Penn State yesterday.

Bama could not score more than 3 points on USC’s defense. Remember Auburn a few years ago, when they were ranked #1 and USC blanked them badly? (Auburn – Bama fans – I cannot tell the difference.)

Texas needed Superman (Vince Young) to bail them out of a major league beating a few seasons ago. Without the running QB, TX is toast against USC.

Florida? Now that would be a game! Too bad there is no playoff or Plus One to settle this one on the field of play. Though, Las Vegas would favor USC by 7 or 10 points.

by Stacy Kiebler Luvs Me on Jan 2, 2009 2:06 PM EST reply actions

@ Sparrow -

PSU’s scoring defense and passing defense are ranked higher than all 4 of those teams. What makes you think they would have defended them any better? Sanchez was absolutely on fire yesterday. I really don’t like USC at all, but give them credit – they executed to absolute perfection in the 2nd quarter. No team, without a truly perfect game, can beat them in the Rose Bowl. PSU held them to 60 yards rushing on the game (1.7 per carry) in a 14 point loss. Seriously, you think Texas, OU, Florida, and especially Alabama would have fared any better?

Other than Texas in ’06, when was the last time a Big 12 or SEC team stayed within 14 points of USC, especially in LA?

by PSUfanNYC on Jan 2, 2009 2:09 PM EST reply actions

I think some of you need to examine the reason for Sanchez being on fire.

Gigantic seams in a zone plus no DB closing speed plus no pass rush equals “on fire.” I especially like the “only 60 yards rushing line from” PSUfan. Do tell.

by Counter Trap on Jan 2, 2009 2:14 PM EST reply actions

You’re citing PSU’s defensive stats against the Big 10 as evidence they’re as good or better than the four teams in question? Seriously?

by MSR on Jan 2, 2009 2:18 PM EST reply actions

PSUfan has been in bitter denial all year.

by drogue on Jan 2, 2009 3:03 PM EST reply actions

Needless to say, I do think that UF, Bama, Texas, and OU would have fared better against USC. Even playing in the Rose Bowl. MSR is absolutely right, if you handicap PSU rankings according to competition, they become a more pedestrian team.

SKLM, so we can use the 2003 USC team as a measure of what the current crop would do? That makes perfect sense…

by Sparrow on Jan 2, 2009 4:10 PM EST reply actions

@ MSR and Sparrow -

So can we handicap Alabama for their horribly weak schedule? Are we supposed to be impressed with their defensive stats against the #116, #113, #112, #111, #110 best scoring offenses in the country? That’s 5 regular season opponents in the bottom 10 in the country in scoring offense, all lower than PSU’s worst opponent. Florida wasn’t much better, having faced the #116, #111, #104, #92, and #91 best offenses. Easy to have “good” defenses against that kind of offensive mediocrity. The SOS argument does both ways.

You can keep daydreaming that one of those top 4 teams would have given USC a better game yesterday. I’m not trying to put them down, just saying Sanchez was perfect yesterday, and no one could have slowed him down. Call it “bitter denial” if you like, but I like to make post that are actually well-informed.

by PSUfanNYC on Jan 2, 2009 4:48 PM EST reply actions

PSU,

Please enlighten us as to the “why” of Sanchez being on fire? Is it the same substance that allowed RICHARD STANZI to be “on fire” as well? GM vehicles have smaller quarter panel seams than the Nit zone defense.

by Counter Trap on Jan 2, 2009 5:32 PM EST reply actions

You know what would have slowed down Sanchez? Some semblance of a pass rush combined with tighter coverage from the DBs. If you think UT, OU, UF, or Bama couldn’t have done that, I will never convince you otherwise. But I’ll also know you’re wrong.

by Sparrow on Jan 2, 2009 5:46 PM EST reply actions

Anyone still think Alabama can compete with USC?

Heh

by PSUfanNYC on Jan 3, 2009 12:38 AM EST reply actions

Show Utah some love in here. As a PSU fan I saw the same dismantling of a great Bama team that USC put up on PSU. No need for a playoff. Everyone in the damn world outside of the 801 and 435 had the Tide crushing the Utes.
