EVENING SHIFT: ROSE BOWL ET AL.

Rose Bowl, open thread, evening and onward. Zombies and angels, the field is yours.

UPDATE! There's now way in fucking hell we're doing anything for the Orange BLOL tonight, and we do not apologize. We will do anything for love, but we won't do that. Fun note, though: from pregame footage, have safely ascertained that Macho Harris has the Mariah Carey effect going on, and could be of any ethnicity whatsoever. Paraguayan? Algerian? Mexican? Half-Maori Australian? Yes.

I know that USC is better on paper, but I get the feeling that they are thinking this Penn State is just another Illinois, and they are a better team than that, so Penn State could shock some people today.

USC may, MAY, be a better team than PSU. But why would the 11-1 Big Ten Champions need a TD to believe they “belong on the same field as USC,” Herbie? Believe it or not, Penn State plays pretty good football too.

Doug, that’s the chorus from 7 Nation Army by the White Stripes. It was very popular in last summer’s Euro 2008 soccer tournament among various fans, so PSU must have picked up on it.

I would like Penn State to win this so my transitive theory will be complete….ya know Penn St killed the Beavers, Beavers whooped USC, so Penn State should beat USC…..it never works……USC is playing a home game, so they technically should win….had this been at State College,Penn State would rule……who wants to bet if USC wins this, they go to number 2…..

Humanitarian @ 18 -

USCw fans are not allowed to cry foul for “exessive national media fellating.”

USCw is consistently one of the most talent laden teams in college football, who can also consistently be counted on to shoot themselves in the foot annually by coughing one up to their cross town rival or some Pac 10 bottom feeder.

While I do agree that USC probably deserves a chance at #1, using Pac-10 bowls as a reason is stupid because their bowl contracts pretty much guarantee that they play down in competition, not up.

USC actually makes the conference look bad because they are that much better than the rest…

The “G” in this case is for Getty, as in, the museum built off oil revenues (and sometimes questionably-obtained works of art, at least when one of its former directors was there).

by Mike on Jan 1, 2009 6:40 PM EST reply actions

USC looks fantastic. Wow! I’m a big fan and do not have any issues with USC not making the title game – the schedule just didn’t work out with no other Pac-10 teams in the top 10 and ND generally sucking.

But, I would have loved to see USC play Florida or Oklahoma, or even Texas in the Fiesta bowl.

I love that USC plays with so much enthusiasm even after fucking up their national title chances. Great big game team (now if they could figure out those pesky few “small” games they seem to have blown the past 3 years).

by D-Nice on Jan 1, 2009 6:43 PM EST reply actions

So, it’s 4:30 mountain time, I now have the second half of the USC throttling of JoPa, and then a nice break until that much anticipated Orange bowl, for the rest of the fuckin day. Who do I kick in the nuts for otherwise ruining what used to be the best day of the year?

I remember when I was a kid on New Years day, my old man pulling the 13" black and white tv into the den and wiring it all up so we could watch two games at a time (only since I have experienced my own adult New Years Eve, can I fully appreciate his talent and dedication). Start to stop full of games, generally a few good ones. Now this.

Seriously, who gets the kick in the nuts?

by General Disarray on Jan 1, 2009 6:47 PM EST reply actions

Well, 31-7 is apparently good enough for Mushberger to start advocating for a split national title for USCw already, before the MNC has even been played.

by ClwFLGator on Jan 1, 2009 6:48 PM EST reply actions

Well, that’s the thing for USC – at this point, pounding on a Big-10 team, no matter how gaudy their record or stats, doesn’t really earn you much… unless the AP voters really want to screw with the BCS. Which they might. But I don’t believe an AP #1 has ever been bumped after winning their bowl game; and you have to think that a #2 that beats a #1 would also be tough to bump – especially since USC is currently only #5.

by peachy on Jan 1, 2009 6:48 PM EST reply actions

@31 Can you blame Musberger? I mean, how many others schools can point to an era where they won one national title in a five year span?

by chg on Jan 1, 2009 6:48 PM EST reply actions

“Apparently it’s enough for Musberger to call it “one of the greatest eras by any team in the history of college football.”

Well, love SC or hate them, it really is. A national championship (or 1.5 or 2 depending on who’s counting and what you consider a national championship) and so many consecutive BSC bowls, most of them victories.

Believe me, even as an SC fan, I sort of get the SC hate, given that until this year they were annually slobbered over and always given the benefit of the doubt. But, Carroll’s “era” is pretty great.

by D-Nice on Jan 1, 2009 6:49 PM EST reply actions

Out of boredom, watched the last few minutes of the Rose Bowl’s second quarter, and could barely focus on the game for all the endless USC and PAC-10 fellating in the booth. When Mussberger did his extended gloating about the PAC-10’s bowl record this year, he began by saying “I have a message for all you east coast media types,” sounding like Sarah Palin on a particularly bad day. Does anyone really think USC football is under-appreciated?

Excellent point Meg:

Oregon (17) beat a higher-ranked Okla. St (13) team;
Oregon St. (UR) beat a higher-ranked Pitt (20) team;
UofA (UR) beat a higher-ranked BYU (16) team;
Cal beat Miami;
SC is kicking the crap out of the best the Big Televen has to offer.

Additionally, if USC is SO much better than Oregon, Oregon St., UofA, Cal, etc, then what does it say about the “ranked” teams that the rest of the Pac is beating?

by kel_varnsen on Jan 1, 2009 7:00 PM EST reply actions

Yeah, I think the Pac-10 should, obviously, be proud of going undefeated in bowls (should USC hold on). I mean, it’s somthing positive after a year of being fairly pathetic out of conference.

But, I don’t know if it means as much as Musberger, et al. are gushing about. The Pac-10 has pretty miserable bowl tie-in, except the Rose and Holiday, and they do usually play down in competition.

Again, the conference and its fans should be happy, but it hardly means that he Pac-10 was underappreciated during the season. Remember their pathetic record against the Mountain West.

The commentators really feed the anti-USC sentiment. Like I said, big USC fan, but just because they’re kicking ass at the Rose Bowl doesn’t mean I’m going to start questioning the BCS championship matchup.

by D-Nice on Jan 1, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions

A vile beating to be sure, and there ain’t nothin’ cheap about it. They’re really, really good. USC knows where to attack our defense (MLB, middle secondary) and won’t let up. Nor should they.

Penn State actually played rather well for a while, but the uncharacteristic (and very poorly timed) penalties really derailed things. But yeah, 31-7.

I like them from the standpoint that they are always in serious consideration every year for making a run at the MNC, whether they actually get there or not. They are the standard by which all other programs should ascribe to (I definitely wish LSU could be like this).

by Studley on Jan 1, 2009 7:27 PM EST reply actions

Don’t get me started on the rankings..I don’t like them. They are unfortunately a necessary evil. They are a function of how a team has done in the season. However, I am not sure they have a good bearing on bowl games. BYU was high in the top 25 rankings because they had a decent record, but there are plenty of teams that are ranked below them that would expose them simply due to depth in one game. Even middling teams in BCS conferences are able to recruit more quality depth just by association with their conference.

Pitt being ranked at all should make anyone realize why the rankings are hit and miss.

I don’t think any conference is particularly better than another one either this year or any other. Bowl game record is just a particular egregiously bad way of trying to quantify value. Some teams are disappointed, some teams are really happy to be there, some teams got healthy, some teams didn’t, etc, etc,

You wouldn’t have to worry about conference BS if there was a play-off with conference winners. Then it would be about what it should be about- who is the best team.

by meg on Jan 1, 2009 7:41 PM EST reply actions

FWIW (If anyone is a friend of Pete’s, pass along, k thx bai)

Here’s the thing. No one questions USC is one of the big boys and on any given day can beat ANYONE. My beef is Carol’s whining about being left out of the BCS. He and his minions brag about how great an atmosphere the USC football team is and how loose he keeps the team (pranks, Ferrell and other celebs dropping in, etc.). BUT, his loosey goosey style has an Achilles heel in that he almost always loses a game despite having the clearly superior team .

Really, I don’t see Saban or Meyer losing a game over the last two years if they took Carol’s place. Maybe they wouldn’t have been able to recruit and all the rest to assemble the same team to start with, but once the talent is assembled, his week-to- week preparation methods have only produced 1 undefeated team when he could have easily had 3-4. (Saban and Meyer have not had teams as relatively superior to their competition as USC clearly is)

So, Pete, if you want to win championships every year, lose your soul like Saban and Meyer and take all the fun out of it, you can’t have both.

If you want to keep the fun in it, accept you will only win about 1/3 the number of championships your team othewise warrants based on talent.

That said, glad PSU and Big 10 is who we thought they were.

by North 2 on Jan 1, 2009 7:46 PM EST reply actions

OK, the game is officially boring.

I was just about to say (before the fumble, that may be overturned) that even if PSU scored, it would still be 31-14. There’s not enough time left, unless there are massive turnovers for USC

by josh on Jan 1, 2009 8:00 PM EST reply actions

@ North 2

I agree that Carroll probably should have at least one more MCS title game appearance, but I don’t know if the the loosey goosey atmosphere is to blame, or at least entirely to blame.

I mean Florida lost to home to Mississippi, yet you don’t seem to be questioning that. I think USC is really hurt when there is not (1) another (at least at the time of the game) elite Pac-10 team on its schedule (not just a 15-25 ranked team) and (2) ND is so down.

Also, not having a conference championship game, which can help them sometimes, really hurts them also. Flordia can put that one loss behind them by winning the SEC championship game. If USC beat even a 16 or 18 ranked Oregon in a PAC-10 championship (who had just killed Oregon St.), I guarantee they would have had a much better chance at being in the title game instead of Oklahoma (who beat a fairly pedestrian Mizzou team in the Big 12). I’m not saying it would have been clear cut or that Oklahoma would not have deserved to play in the title game. But, USC would have a much better chance.

As it is, Carroll goes down as a great coach. But, he really should win a second title before he leaves with all of this talent.

by OrangeGator on Jan 1, 2009 8:07 PM EST reply actions

@ D-Nice,

I thought about the Mississippi game and figure that the Stanford and UCLA losses were WAY worse than Miss, the loss to the Beavers was roughly equal (time has shown UF and USC to be much much better than the team they lost to).

Think of it this way, if USC had taken care of business the previous two years and won the whole enchilada, they proooobably get the benefit of the doubt when they lose to OSU this year and still make it to the MNC game. The SEC is riding a wave of “Benefit of the Doubt” thanks to tOSU rolling over for us, but one loss to Oklahoma this year, and I figure we are back to even with USC, given their body of work.

I think Carol is a good coach and glad he is in College football, he just needs to acknowledge the truth. Just like the recent failures of the Big Televen have all but eliminated them from next year’s MNC game before this season is even over, the previous horrible (historically so in the case of the Stanford game) losses cost this year’s USC team a shot.

All USC has to do is run the table and they are a shoe in next year, if Florida wins over OU, the SEC will maintain their “One loss champion can still play for the MNC.” May not be fair, but it is the truth.

S-VC – what’s left of Stokely-Van Camp, the former Pork and Beans purveyors.

My fault, it was Right Tackle Khalil El-Amin with Tebow’s picture, not the Right Guard.

(Former since Quaker Oats sold the P&B line to ConAgra.)

Did anyone notice Tebow’s pic in place of Cincy’s starting right guard Khalil El-Amin? I know Tebow is big…but not 6’4" 312 big…

I have a pic of it…funny crap…gotta love Fox! Always on top of things!

How much fun would it be trying to convert the Bank Offer to the number of dozens of Krispy Kreme donuts that could be purchased….

UC’s defenders should commit seppuku to restore family honor after that run by Taylor. Shazbot, he made them look bad.

Either USC is that far superior or the Big 10 is that far inferior during the past decade or so.

I cannot tell. But, what I can tell is those two cotton-pickers – ABC’s Mushmouth and Herbshreik fawn just a little too much at his Majesty Pete Carroll.

But, USC would whack any of the other one-loss teams out there, with ease.

Do you think the Orange Bowl folks envisioned having an old-school Metro Conference matchup when they joined the BCS? Me neither…

The 1942 FedEx Orange Bowl? Revisionist history by Chris Rose. (Although it would be interesting to see what DC-3’s would have looked like in the FedEx livery.)

“USC would whack any of the other one-loss teams out there, with ease.”

You go on thinking like that, and make sure and write it down like you did. Makes it easier to keep up with the idiots.

@North 2 — “All USC has to do is run the table and they are a shoe in next year”

This is true for any team in any BCS conference (or ND), except in the extremely unlikely event that there are more than two undefeated teams from BCS conferences (okay, it’s happened once this decade, but zero undefeated teams has happened more often).

Man, the Big Ten sucks this year. Even more than normal.

usc wouldnt kill any team with ease but no one prepares teams for bowl games as good as SC. SC would be a good game against any one loss team for sure. fight on trojans!
