THAT MOMENT WHICH HAPPENED TO OCCUR IN 2008
We abhor end of the year lists mostly because they come straight from the stat sheet and the standings, not from the complex, muddled story of what actually occurred in the season. They also excise a good amount of the context to a moment, as well. Was any player in any single game as dominant in a moment as Brian Orakpo was against Oklahoma? Even with the stat line–two sacks, four tackles for a loss and a forced fumble–you cheat what he did to Oklahoma in terms of changing protections and flustering Sam Bradford into making–gasp!–two or three mistakes in a game.
Or, to concatenate that bit of praise and turn this into Connections with James Burke for football: did any single performance which led to a singular defeat that then led to the even bigger upset of undefeated Texas? Without Orakpo disintegrating the Oklahoma line and Colt McCoy being devilishly accurate, there is no undefeated Texas rolling into this game, where Michael Crabtree spontaneously generated the one moment this year that had us springing to our feet.
Musberger’s bellowing call–so enthused he fucks up the pronunciation a bit, blurting out something that sounds like “CROBB-TRAAAAAAYYY”–is all you need. We don’t even hear Herbstreit after that; the delirium of the moment still lingers and obliterates all commentary. There is a moment in each season you remember with a clarity bordering on the surreal , as if a South American writer had gotten a hold of the script and written floating women and feathered angels speaking odd tongues into the background. There’s more than a little Marquez in Crabtree’s catch, and not just in its mythical content; the tragic side kept Texas from the national title game, and put Bob Stoops’ toes in the surf of Biscayne Bay.

So far this week, I’ve seen Tebow, Cody, McCoy, Orakpo, Bradford, Laurinaitis, and Chizik described as overrated.
I might have added that last one.

I know it was a pillow fight, but I’ll take the Purdue hook and lateral for the win vs. Michigan. And I pretty much hate both teams.

Seeing Crabtree man-up in the final seconds and beat Texas was a thing of totaly joy.
Winning by a few points was preferable than seeing Tech win by a whole bunch of points, as they did throughout most of the game.
Since Tech beat Texas mano-a-mano, why is Texas ranked ahead of Texas??????????????????????
(My total joy at the way this game ended had nothing to do with the one-man-gang Texas beating USC at the Rose Bowl a few years ago—NOT!!!!)

I think that most people here in Texas have psychological problems arising from this single play. They seem to have forgotten this whole game as a result of this and decry OU’s trip to the B12CG as being some kind of shenanigans being pulled off by OU. Ignoring the fact that OU has the B12’s ONLY out-of conference victories against ranked teams.

Swindle, I know you’ve nominated Leach for man of the year for several consecutive years, but I still don’t see what was so compelling about this game. This was a standard highly-ranked team-blows-it game. It happens several times each year.
If McCoy and crew had been on their game at all in the 50 minutes of the game I would consider this newsworthy, but to me the fact that Texas played 50 shitty minutes yet still almost won a game on the road, against a top 10 team after 3 straight tough games said more to me about Texas than it did about TxTech.

By virtue of your argument, it is Texas, not Oklahoma who should be in the National Championship game. @19. The OU > Tech > UT > OU > Tech ad infinitum argument that Stoops was making and Sooners parrot is the equivalent of saying: “I promise you won’t be able to figure this out, so don’t bother trying.” That is why Okies find it so attractive, it naturally appeals to limited cognitive ability.
Complex situations require more complex thought than ipso facto whammo blammo. Damn near every sports writer I saw unaffiliated with either school was able to work through it. Unsurprisingly, Sooners can’t work through it.
The weird thing is, people from Texas Tech don’t even believe in the “Tech should be in front of Texas if you just go by head-to-head omg lol bbq wtf!!!!!” argument. It’s only Sooners. I’m not sure that I heard a single person say that Tech should be in the Big XII championship game. Why? Because no one believed they were the best. It came down to the other two teams… and they settled it on a neutral field.
Am I being condescending? Of course. But it is only because Sooners invite it.

Isn’t it amazing? You try to bring up moments that stand out and certain people why seem to like “orange?” have to show up and cry some more. Let it be known, Tech football and their fans believe as much as Oklahoma and Texas that the Raiders should have been in the Big-12 championship game. Tech is so bad as it appeared in the OU game and OU certainly is not so good as they appeared. Which team is best is irrevelant because they all finished 11-1 in regular season. That is a tie. They all got a trophy. The Sooners got to play in the title game because a a “Fifth” tie breaker. Tech got pushed down in the standings about two spots lower than UT did with their loss, which is predicated by the voters preference for “name” schools to gain more for less. OU won the Big-12 Championship game, so they deserved the opportunity to play for the National Championship. But, Texas being higher than Tech is hogwash. We beat Texas, npt with a miricle play, but with a play that was practiced over and over. Texas did NOT stop it, we won. Play the game again and they would not be even in the game because Tech would not allow them to come back again. Play Oklahoma again and, win or lose, the game will be very close one. Same with Texas vs OU. Play it again, it too could go either way. OU was definately playing the best of the three at the end of the season. Despite Tech’s loss to UT, they and UT were very even. I will say, all three are better than any other team or teams in the U.S.A. That is why they all will win their bowl games and all will finish in the top 3 or 4 in the final standings. All this set them up for a great set of games next year. All they have to remember is to not allow anyone else to break into the group (re: Oklahoma State, Kansas, etc.). Enjoy the bowls and root for the Big-12. WE WILL WIN!

The Big12 South argument (and everyone needs to get over it).
I’m a Tech fan, first off, so I’m not going for OU or UT in this argument.
OU, UT, and Tech all tied for first place, which eliminates the head to head arguments. That can no longer be used.
Then it basically comes down to “who is the best team in the eyes of the voters between the three teams that are tied?” It does not mean “eliminate one team and then determine the best team based on head-to-head”.
Once you dismiss the H2H, it is done and can no longer be used, no matter how many times you scream it. Voters chose OU because they thought they were better. That is the bottom line.

You know who I really hate? The Big 12. Not any particular school (though man oh man does Texas strive to be the worst of a bad lot), the whole conference. Well, the Big 12 South, at least. Anyway. What if there were a college football conference dominated by schools who are utterly incapable of taking a bad break with any kind of dignity? Why, it’d look a lot like the Big 12 South! At least USC plays with dignity.

Sorry folks, the Crabtree catch was the play of the year. Hands down.
And that’s coming from a guy who probably had the most emotional, joy-filled moment rooting for my own team ever. On the road at Indiana, a few plays after Dante Love’s career was ended on a freak helmet-to-helmet hit (which led to an IU fumble recovery for a TD), the Cards strike back with a 50-yard, off-balance laser beam touchdown pass from Nate Davis to Myles Trempe. In the grand scheme of college football this year, it’s relatively tiny. For any Ball Stater, it was a moment packed with emotion and a sign that this team was truly special. I spent the next five minutes dancing in a happy, beer-soaked mosh pit with fellow BSU alums at the Chicago bar where we gather.
Crabtree’s play blows even that away for me. I ran around my coffee table pumping my fist after Tech’s dramatic victory, and I didn’t even know why.

As a USC fan the play of the year was Brian Cushing not holding on to a ball he should have intercepted at the end of the first half of the Oregon State game. If he holds onto that ball then USC is still within reach when Pete Carroll and staff go in and make the halftime adjustments that shut OSU down in the second half. USC wins the game and there is an even bigger brouhaha at the end of the season about who gets to face them in the BCS title game.
@ #27 What gets me about the Big 12 is how the always seem to job the Pac 10 so badly in the computer rankings. Too bad the BCS computer programs are secret.
