Demarco’s line in his loss to Texas:

7 carries. 6 yards.

Because the nation wanted to see this game by determining the tiebreak in the Big 12 via the Harris and Coaches poll, perhaps they will delay it until June when Demarco heals up.

another tough break for demarco, and i hate it for him

that being said, i don’t think it hurts us too bad, and may even help us – i think we’ve got to establish a physical running game early to set up the play action and to get your linebackers jumping on the run and out of position – brown and madu are better power runners than demarco, so having to use just them to establish a physical running game may actually be better

brown actually averaged more yards per game than demarco, and after demarco went out on the kickoff of the big 12 championship game, madu had 7.6 ypc and 114 yards to go along with brown’s 122 yards

I don’t think I ever made it past about the 0:45 mark in that clip. Some of those things we news to me…

Those floating ramps were the bane of my existence when I was 12. I could beat Mike Tyson’s Punch Out with my eyes closed, but I couldn’t touch that stage in Battletoads.

by Rob on Dec 16, 2008 2:14 PM EST reply actions

That’s fucking horrifying. Thanks for bringing back painful childhood memories. I’ll be in the fetal position for the rest of the day.

by Silver Britches on Dec 16, 2008 2:18 PM EST reply actions

Hey I never saw those blue ramps! THAT’s why I always fell in the pit!

by ckc on Dec 16, 2008 2:28 PM EST reply actions

Ninja Gaiden, Karate Kid (particularly the hurricane stage) and Adventures of Bayou Billy bring up similar memories. I think Battletoads was so hard so quickly I never really bothered playing it much.

by doubtingthomas on Dec 16, 2008 2:31 PM EST reply actions

Just a note… Oklahoma is not so terrifying. They have been beaten.

by blon on Dec 16, 2008 2:35 PM EST reply actions

Ugh, I never made it past about the 1:50 mark. Nevah, evah.

by Holly on Dec 16, 2008 2:36 PM EST reply actions

Oklahoma is ALWAYS terrifying – although not necessarily because they’re any good at football.

I was only addressing the football issue, but I wouldn’t necessarily characterize Oklahoma as terrifying. I have a lot of other descriptive words…

by blon on Dec 16, 2008 2:46 PM EST reply actions

We usually rented Battletoads not because we had any chance at beating that stage, but because of the “still runs through my head while waiting to cross the street 15 years later” pause music.

blon,

let me be the first to congratulate you on your undefeated season

oh…wait…nevermind.

yep. OU was exposed by UT and is still reeling from it.
Good thing Florida cruised their season unscathed.

Let those amongst us who are undefeated cast the first stone.

45-35. Pretty much sums it up for me. But congrats on winning the Big 12. Bradford is a great quarterback and very deserving of the Heisman. He represents OU well. McCoy was a tad bit more deserving, but that’s the way things worked out .

I cannot tell you that I will be rooting for OU in the national championship game because I won’t.

@2-

Only in La-La Land does losing a 1,000 yd rusher (+ 400 yds in the air) become a tactical advantange.

BOOMER!!!

Oh God — Battletoads. That was nightmare fuel for my youth. That ranks up there with that son-of-a-bitch M. Bison on SF2 Turbo at max difficulty. Only times I’ve ever thrown a controller in sheer rage.

i won’t mention texas tech, but i will agree with you that both bradford and mccoy were deserving of the heisman – i’m glad my guy won, but i’m also glad your guy didn’t finish 3rd b/c, like you said, he was every bit as deserving and, though i hate to admit it, he really is a good kid

i’d also like you SEC fans to take note that blon will not be rooting for a fellow big 12 team in the title game – this is how it’s supposed to work – you root against your conference rivals b/c you hate them – you don’t root for your rivals out of some bizarre conference loyalty/pride thing that doesn’t make any sense

on that note, go buckeyes

by okiedomer on Dec 16, 2008 3:43 PM EST reply actions

I will always remember 2008 as the year the Big XII South surpassed Bammer/Barner in sheer volume of in-thread slapfights. No mean feat, either. Y’all should be proud.

holly,

thank you for the kind words – hearing such praise from an SEC fan…well, i feel like jesusmas just came early

If Tech, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma State, Iowa State, A&M (yes, A&M), Baylor, Kansas State, or Colorado were playing in a bowl game or for the national championship, they would have my full support and best wishes. (I don’t think I missed any Big 12 team…)

But it’s OU. No way on god’s green earth would I root for the Sooners. You know that. Being an OU grad, I would only expect the same sentiment for UT from you.

By the way, I happen to like the Buckeyes. I still want to beat them, but I like and respect the program just the same. I attended the game in Columbus a few years ago and had a great time. The OSU crowd was one of the most cordial. Columbus is a nice town.

Oh, and, GO GATORS.

fair enough – i root for texas to lose every single game they play* – same for ok state, except for when they play you – aggy fans are just so annoying that i love seeing them lose, except, of course, to you – i like to talk about how much respect i have for nebraska fans and how it’s good for football when they have a good team in lincoln, but secretly i snicker at every loss – colorado and k-state are just scummy and trashy, respectively – the rest aren’t relevant enough for me to care about – my only soft spots are teams coached by former Sooner coaches

*the 05 rose bowl i had to root for texas b/c USC was in danger of breaking our all-time win streak

i don’t really have any strong feelings either way about ohio state, although i do respect their deep hatred for michigan, or as i call them, the texas of the north – your loss to buckeye will be glorious in that it will end the off-season crying about “it should have been us!”

The same goes for you and Florida. We can’t wait to watch the Gator defense do to OU what we did back in October. Enjoy the game.

And it should have been UT.

Gotta love the Battletoads pause music.

by Kecalf Bailey on Dec 16, 2008 4:52 PM EST reply actions

What we have here is an intra-conference hate-fest…I’d like to throw in some shit but I can’t break into the fight with my non-conference smack, dammit. Just not enough hatred and ammo.

I’m gonna go back to my lesbian buddhist psychic for conversation…more frickin’ sparks over there than this neighborhood dogfight…

I, for one, am glad we now know the compete breakdown of two random people’s affiliations and rooting interests. I feel like I can sleep better at night.

One of many signs that I’m old – the difference between 5 minutes ago and now is that I have seen a video clip of this “Battletoads” game that you kids are talking about, and learned that it was hard “back in the day.”

If you’ll excuse me, I think some kids need to be evicted from my lawn.

by DC Trojan on Dec 16, 2008 5:40 PM EST reply actions

Wow, that was one intense clip. I do hope the national title game won’t be that intense! I couldn’t handle it.

This is just conversation in the Big 12. You people have no idea how to conduct a proper rivalry. We do this for fun.

I found the wind tunnel easy as a kid, but that might be because I had the Nintendo Power with the level mapped out. If you can beat the Mike Tyson bout, which I have never done and as I understand it is nothing more than a ridiculous feat of memorization and perfect timing, you should be able to deal with the Battletoads wind tunnel no problem – go get a copy and try it out. The only hard part is when the exclamation point appears and you have to start jumping on your own, because the physics of where the platforms are suddenly gets confusing.

The only thing that surprised me about this clip was that the guy didn’t take the warp zone before the seventh monolith in the last phase, because the ice level following this one is WEAK.

WHAT THE FUCK. WHO ON GODS EARTH DECIDED TO PUT THAT SEQUENCE IN A VIDEO GAME

shit, i could spend years navigating that one level alone

I feel like I DID spend years on that one level alone. Which may explain a lot.

#20…so, you’re saying I SHOULDN’T support Florida so that I can say “yeah, the National Champion Gators, that one loss? Yeah, pops collar that was us”?

But we got to say it in ‘77…’course I was FOUR…

Having inexplicably never played Battletoads, can anyone who has compare it for me to the two worst soothe-the-rage-with-thoughts-of-sweet-murder offenders I experienced, namely, Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins and Top Gun?

by CNB on Dec 16, 2008 11:28 PM EST reply actions

Battletoads was 100x more fun than Ghosts ‘N’ Goblins, which was of the same level of sheer frustration as being an Auburn fan I imagine.

by ShockFX on Dec 17, 2008 2:24 AM EST reply actions

Here’s how I played Top Gun

- Turn On NES
- Press Start
- Start Stage 1
- Fly flawlessly annihilating all in my path without taking a hit
- begin landing sequence to finish Stage 1
-Turn Off NES

eff’in aircraft carrier landing…

I however raise you one Blaster Master. Holy hell, that game was impossible.
