Wow – Woffie Talk on EDSBS…never thought I’d see the day.

FWIW -as an App State fan, I was calling for Ayers to Army a while back, just like I was calling for PJ to Navy. He’s dealt with limited resources for years, and done pretty well (won SoCon in ‘04 and Co-Champ in ‘07).

Other than him – a guy from a good Patriot League or Ivy school would probably have a handle on a job like that as well.

@Coop. He came to Wofford when we were NAIA actually. The rapid upward movement in divisions is more due to Richardson than anyone else. He built the new sports complex (or it was new when I was there) which houses the Panthers during training camp. New stadium followed shortly. Thats a big selling point. Who else in FCS has facilities built to NFL specifications? Thats not to take anything from Ayers. I love the man and if you can be in the FCS playoffs and compete with the likes of App St. , Deleware etc…year in and year out at a tough academic school of 1200 students, thats quite a feat.

I do not think Ayers would take the Army job. Ayers is very interesting to me because he got fired at ETSU when they were in the SoCon, then was hired to coach Wofford when they were D-II, I think, and then he brought them up to the I-AA level and has competed very well in the SoCon. I think they won the SoCon in ‘03 or ‘04, outright, and have tied for the title a couple of times.

The reason I bring this up is that you don’t see a coach get canned at a school like Syracuse or WVa, and then return with a South Fla or UConn and win the conference title.

@8 That was me. Army would be a prefect fit for him. He could run his system and win 7 games a year there I believe. Plus he’s an old military guy. But I’d rather him stay so we can continue to compete for SoCon champs.

@10 He’s not pulling down millions but he does better than probably 99% of all FCS coaches. I think he makes about 200k. Jerry Richardson (owner of the Car. Panthers, alumni and booster) sees to it that he is happy. How much more than that would he make at Army?

On Clawson….the animosity I feel for him is incredible. He puts the team I played for out of the playoffs (of which I thought we had a great shot at winning) with offensive wizardry the likes of which I have never witnessed. A few weeks later is named OC at the team I always wished I could have played for. After watching what he did to Wofford I thought it was a great hire. He proceeds to preside over offensive incompetince the likes of which I have never seen. Clawson is my own personal arch-nemesis.

The other day, a former Wofford play was chimming in on this board about Mike Ayers, the head coach at Wofford.
I think he’d be a good fit for Army. But does he want to take that chance?

Clawson won a Patriot League title and a playoff game at Fordham. Please re-read that sentence. Fordham was terrible before he arrived, a DIII program masquerading as an Ivy League wannabe. If you’ve ever seen their *cough* *cough* “facilities,” you’d realize what a great job he did.
I think a MAC school is a good fit for him.
