Well played LSUFreek, well played. On a more serious note, lets see how Tebow and the gators will do against a team that is playing like a machine right now, rolling up points (which will more in likely not happen in the MNC as it is almost a month away and not playing incredibly hurts a dynamics offenses chances as they become out of sinc and lose their mental focus. Examples: Any time the Colts get a 1st round bye in the NFL, Ohio State two years in a row, Oklahoma against USC, and etc.) Thats why I’m picking the gators. Go playoff!

2001-Miami 6
2000-Oklahoma 8
1999-Tennessee 11

Are the We behind this site trying to make people hate Tebow, an otherwise admirable guy (at least to non-rivals)?
Because they’re doing a good job.
Sheesh.

Good game Swindle, Gators et al.
I thought we blew some opportunities but I thought UF was better overall.
That’s about all I can muster right now.
I’m now going to roll over to the other side of the bed and pick up what’s left of this Makers here.

very good #7….I was wondering if anyone would notice. Of course Tennessee won in 1998.

Looks like a Mastodon to me. There’s got to be a team named the Fighting Mastodons somewhere in Arkansas.

I think the defense rating is a ltitle skewed for a couple reasons. First and foremost, the vast majority of points scored against the Sooners were after the game was well in hand and/or the second or third stringers were in the game. It’s hard to play defense, and it’s even harder when your team has already scored 60 points and you’re more worried about the after parties than stopping a team down by 50 points.
That being said, I’d like to know some OU fan’s opinion about whether the team’s defensive unit still misses Ryan Reynolds up the middle.

Again with the, “well, just wait until the Gators see THIS offense/defense/running back/morbidly obese DT, let’s see what they do then!” angle?

The only school with the Mastodon mascot is IPFW (Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne), which to my knowledge, has no football team.

rjsplow — the statistics skew the same way for Florida, since most of their games were over in the second quarter as well. UF’s scoring defense and yards per game would be even better if their first team had been on the field the whole game. So that argument washes. From what I’ve watched of OU, they don’t seem to tackle very well, whereas Alabama hardly missed a tackle all game against us. I think the statistical difference shows a real difference in quality.

Crabapple-
Thanks. I could not google any Fighting Glyptodonts, so they will probably have to settle for a basball game againts the UCI Anteaters.
Of course, if I ran the Loris (SC) schoool system, I’d rename the HS team the Lemurs.

I wonder what the game would have been like if Percy Harvin played at 100% full strength, the Florida DLine was at 100% full strength, and if Urban Meyer had 6 weeks to prepare as a heavy underdog…oh and throw in Julio Jones going down after he runs back the opening kick off…
No need to wonder…the same that happen to Ohio State would have happened to Alabama.
Bama had it all going in their favor:
The underdog role, a wounded Gator team without its best play-maker, no time off for rust, and a familiar venue.
You don’t get very many shots like Bama had this weekend – just ask USC who plays in a weaker conference, has better players and coaching, and still has struggled to get back to the NCG after losing to Texas in 05.
FWIW – it sure was nice driving into work this morning and not seeing a single Bama car flag flying – things are getting back to normal, well the flags are not flying.

The most impressive stat to me is that Florida scored 31 points without the aid of a single turnover or a huge edge in field position (in terms of long kick off returns – Bama did blow a couple of field position plays – fake field goal and #28 stepping out of bounce at the 3 on the kick off).
Florida completely dominated the 4th quarter. Bama had -2 yard of offense and gave up 14 points in the 4th. That was the difference in the game.

Please refrain from comparing the SECCG to the assraping from a few years ago.
This was a good game, but the better team won. I’m fine with that. The team with the Heisman trophy winner at QB, the team with a head coach in place for 4 years, with his system in place that long, won. They beat a team that went 12-0 with John Parker Wilson at QB and 9 scholarship seniors, while starting true freshmen at LB and WR, and a host of other underclassmen playing prominent roles. That’s not meant to take away from UF, I know they have some strong, young talent.
Bama had its chances and didn’t cash in. Bama made some stupid mistakes (see Javy at the 4 yard line), but I don’t think that would’ve made much difference. UF was the better team.
Sure, Percy may have made a difference, but let’s not pretend that he, along with a completely healthy DL, would’ve turned this game into a rout. Keep in mind Glen Coffee tweaked his hamstring during practice, so he wasn’t 100%, but still ran for 100+.
I’m happy and proud of this team. And whenever you start spouting off, I just think back to the time when CNS was hired, and you and the aubies talked about how CNS was overrated, wouldn’t be able to recruit at Bama, and was overall not as good a coach as Tubs.
It only gets better from here. You know it, and I know it. Those flags aren’t going anywhere.

TAFKatOSUB,
I don’t want to know specifics…but what part of the state do you live in? Lower, middle or north?
by CapstoneAlum on Dec 8, 2008 11:41 AM EST reply actions
This game was better, much better than the 06 NCG…but I gave you the reasons why it was much better. I’m not saying that Bama would have failed as miserably as Ohio State did in 06…that was an epic failure. The better team definitely won that game and I have never taken anything away from Florida.
What I was trying to say is that Alabama had a lot going in its favor: 5th year senior quarterback, the best offensive lineman in the country, a stable of badass running backs, the best defensive tackle in the country, the best defensive mind in the country, and Alabama had the underdog role – you guys have no idea what it’s like to play as the favorite in every big game and have to live up to having the spotlight and the hype – it is so much easier to fly under the radar and stay focused. And Alabama was 100% healthy….on the flip side, Florida was beat up, didn’t have Percy, and is extremely young in its own right.
And for me, the biggest advantage that Alabama had was that Urban Meyer didn’t have 6 weeks to prepare. He outcoached Saban in this game and picked apart Saban’s defense for 31 freaking points – 31 unaided points.

Unaided, TAFK? Did you watch the game?
Javy Arenas made two terrible decisions in the return game, one of which set up a UF touchdown. Two very unlucky personal fouls (horse-collar and facemask) prolonged two UF drives that each ultimately led to TDs (the second was an absolute killer, as UF would’ve otherwise punted the ball back to Bama down 20-17 with 10 minutes left and a tired defense).
You are a damn fool, and everything you’ve been saying for the past several weeks about Bama being a pretender was proven complete bullshit on Saturday, no matter how badly you try to rationalize away what was plainly evident to any remotely objective observer.
by MSR on Dec 8, 2008 1:40 PM EST reply actions
And that’s not to mention the no-call on Tebow’s intentional grounding.
Regardless, the notion that UF put up 31 points on this Bama D because Saban got outcoached is utterly ridiculous. The fact that Bama’s D has performed as well as it has despite its obvious personnel deficiencies is a testament to just how great a defensive coach Nick Saban is.

Sour Grapes Dept:
Florida beat Bama by 11, Vegas’ exact line – even though Percival Harvin was out….
…And, Vegas would make USC the favorite against any team right now.
Too bad this MNC is settled by the clap-trap BS-BCS system and not a playoff. USC vs Florida, now that would be a game.
by Stacy Kiebler Luvs Me on Dec 8, 2008 2:02 PM EST reply actions
Lack of defensive talent? You have the best DT in the fricking country – T.Cody cannot be single-blocked. You have a great defensive line, fast, athletic LB’s, especially McClain, and a stud all american in the secondary in Johnson. Offensively, you have the best offensive lineman in the country, the best WR in the country in the making, and a 5th year starting senior quarterback who broke every single QB record at Alabama. Not to mention that collection of tough-nosed running backs.
Urban Meyer found a match up he liked and called the right plays against Saban’s defense. Your lack of talent tackled as well as you can tackle against Florida…they didn’t let Florida break a long one.
This notion that this is the least talented team Saban will ever have is absolutely absurd. If Andre Smith goes first in the draft, how can you get any more talented at that position? Now you might argue that Alabama is going to get deeper…but this season it was a mute point because Alabama stayed healthy all year.
The bottom line is that Florida, at about 80% strength, put 31 points on Saban’s defense.
by TAFKatOSUB on Dec 8, 2008 2:12 PM EST reply actions
Damn dude, can you read? Judging by your use of the phrase “mute point”, I’m guessing the answer is “sorta.”
I never said Alabama had no defensive talent; rather, I referred to their having personnel deficiencies on that side of the football, a wholly uncontroversial proposition to anyone with a clue.
Do you think a player like Marquis Johnson (#24—you know the one who was repeatedly toasted on Saturday) will be the third corner on a fully complemented Saban defense? Hell, though he’s played solidly this season, even Javy Arenas’ PT at corner is a product of a lack of talent at that position.
At LB, we’ve been forced to start a converted corner/safety (who most people have long said would be lucky to see the field at UA), a true freshman, and a converted DL who lacks the athleticism needed to effectively play the position at a high level (although he’s performed much better than expected).
Bama’s DL is “great”? Seriously? Cody is certainly a force, but our ends are entirely pedestrian. You might oughtta take a look at our sack numbers this season (hint: Bama’s tied for 7th in the SEC).
And why the fuck are you talking about offensive personnel? Who brought that up?
by MSR on Dec 8, 2008 2:26 PM EST reply actions
Oh, and you completely failed to respond to my pointing out that UF’s 31 points were hardly “unaided” as you oh-so-ignorantly asserted.

The Artist—
Thanks for the compliments. We will take em….now, with that said…I knew and even told Swindle, if we get into the red zone and start kicking FG instead of TD’s, we are toast…We have played “decent” defense all year, albeit vs alot lesser competition….The SEC’s QB play this year is on really a high school level, besides Tebow….which is the MOST important position on the team because of his circle of influence and confidence ripples thru the team….JPW, true, holds Bamas records….but he is no Joe Namath, which means just because he holds records doesnt make him a “great QB”..You of all people can see the diffence from a “game manager QB” to a “playmaker QB” and how if effects the offense AND the defense….with confidence, the defense will try harder to get the ball back to give the O a chance to score if they trust the guy behind center…..True, our defense is ahead of our offense in some regard, but as mentioned previously, our CB play was weak and Urban knew that and he game planned accordingly….we have some young talent in the wings at that position that will overtake the current starter….time is on our side, since they will get better, hopefully faster than the rest of the SEC once this current crop of powerbrokers-Tebow, Harvin move on, hopefully we will have a QB that will step up and we can have a real" balanced attack "and make throws in front of the receiver instead of having the receiver wait on the ball like the last 3 yrs…..and once we get a decent amount of NFL talent developed on both sides of the ball, then we can make a real run at it all, this year was nothing but a glorified dress rehearsal, seeing how far we could go on the injury tightrope, having players coached up and playing above their paygrade so to speak….I think if we traded Tebow for JPW, Florida still wins just because they are deeper talent wise.I’ m just glad we competed, I felt we were in the game, even in the 4th quarter, we just make some very crucial mental errors at key moments that flipped the field and momentum……the biggest play I felt was the blatant intentional grounding by Tebow since the guy he was throwing to was OUT of the picture going AWAY from where Timmy threw it….it would have meant loss of down and backed them up enough where they would have had to punt, we get the ball back etc etc…..but they got the break, we got lucky on a late hit, so it was a wash, but they got the points off of it, we didnt…..Thats why Saban in all about the “little things”…..and thats what cost us the game, I look for #24 Marquis Johnson to either man up and get better or get passed up on the depth chart, he got toasted one too many times for Sabans liking I promise ya….In reality, next year, we will break in a new QB, new left tackle, a new guard and a new center, so it will be curious to see how well we can run and throw it, so that will be a true “rebuilding year”, I am thinking 9-3 next year unless our new QB is better than that ….most first time SEC QB’s really fall on their face pretty quick….(see Crompton, Jarrett Lee, etc)….
I see Florida, Alabama, Miami, USC and even tOSU in the mix for the next few years, plus the Big 12 usual suspects, just who can avoid the usual trap game that screws up the season….It was fun while it lasted and I thought we would fall to Ole Miss and LSU at home, so what I and most fans wanted was Auburn, we got it, and we kinda knew we would need help with turnovers and mistakes to beat Florida, we never got that help, we made the mistakes, and the results speak for themselves. Good job Tebow, get a healthy Harvin and wax the Sooners….Win this so Urban Meyer will go to ND please!

@37- Very impressed with Bama and Saban. I’m sure it is tough to lose.
That said that was no intentional grounding on Tebow. The ball landed at the feet of an ineligible receiver. If that happened, IG will never be called.
If anything, Bama got the benefit of the bad calls Saturday. That certainly worked in your favor but I agree that the officiating was bad. Tthe SEC assigned their 3rd best crew to the CG for some reason.
