The critics out there are too young or too caught up in their SC hatred to realize how FUCKING AWESOME this is. Restoring a wonderful tradition and giving a ‘Fuck You’ to the NCAA is fantastic. I hope UCLA does it next year.

Yeah, this idea has been floated at least a couple of times in recent years. I think Pete offered to burn one of his time-outs each half if UCLA wanted to do it last year, but Dorrell declined. So it isn’t just a matter of USC “owning” the Rose Bowl, UCLA would be encouraged to also wear home jersey’s on alternate years.

If one time-out determines the outcome of this year’s game then USC deserves to lose it since a whole lot of other stuff has gone wrong. I see this as a cool thing, like intentionally taking the penalty for the “missing man” tribute to Mario Danello.

It won’t be jaundice Orson, it will be mercury. See even though Oregon’s colors are green and yellow Nike seems to think silver and black are part of Oregon’s color scheme. When I saw the winged unis against AZ I thought of ‘Starlight Express’, neon rollerblading Broadway goodness!

Sorry to post second time, but I realized no one also mentioned that the tradition of USC/UCLA both using home colors was a major part of the rivalry up until the 1982 season when both programs shared the LA Coliseum as their home stadium (after which UCLA moved to the Rose Bowl). Coaches since 1982 have discussed bringing it back, but not been willing to take the penalty.

Why neither team got a penalty in those days, I don’t actually know –but the photos from that era were sharp.

But, y’know, most people gloss over that part. LOL @ “arrogance”.

Its actually an NCAA penalty, not a Pac-10 Penalty –actually, the Pac-10 is filing for a waiver to the NCAA rule on USC’s behalf.

Wonder if he’ll tell his kids to change jerseys at halftime if UCLA stuns them and actually puts up a fight. You don’t fuck with rivalry games, that’s the rule. Logic-defying things happen (see USC-UCLA 2006, Nebraska-Colorado pretty much since 1997, etc) that’ll make tying one hand behind your back a pretty foolhardy maneuver.

This kind of reminds me of Sean Connery in “The Presidio.” He limits himself to using only his left thumb to kick some guy’s ass on account of the right being far too powerful.
I guess Pete’s pretty much saying the game wouldn’t be fair if USC had their full compliment of Timeouts.

OhioDawg… Yeah, I’d say you’re pretty much right, that’s what a tradition is… Here’s a better way to put my thoughts; tradition should be enforced by choice, not regulation. If two teams agree to both wear colors, they should be able to.

@22 – if memory serves me right, LSU actually rolled out yellow home jerseys for that game, too.

I am highly embarrassed to have ever engaged in any sort of conflict over Gerry DiNardo, which is sort of the equivalent of being the last drunks in the bar having it out over who will go home with the banker’s secretary from the Beverly Hillbillies…

The only problem? It’s possible SC won’t have a TO to burn before kicking a 55-yard field goal with the Trojans up, 69-0, as time expires.

I think #7 hit the nail on the head. Pete the C is showing his ass to UCLA.

It’s interesting that basketball and baseball go the other way with the home team wearing white or light colored uniforms.

Ramblin Jeff – I think having the same thing occur over long periods of time is darn near the definition of tradition. This one may have had an odd reason to start, but it seems pretty traditional now to see the home football team in darker colors.

Correct. As long as it is agreed upon before the season starts, home teams may wear white jerseys. LSU has done this for most home games that I can remember, save a few cupcake games here and there (vs Tulane this year, for instance).

I remember waaaay back when Gerry Dinardo (sorry…I just vomited) was coaching, Vandy wouldn’t let us wear white at home. The school then decided to “white out Vandy!!!111!!” by encouraging everyone to wear white to the game. It was pretty lame…
