I realize I'm chiming in here late, but I couldn't help but to chortle derisively when I read Mack Brown citing the MAC as one of the conferences that gets its tiebreakers right.

Because truly, the MAC has one of the bone-stupidest tiebreaker schemes on Planet Earth.

Had my Ball State Cardinals lost to Western Michigan last week (and assuming that CMU doesn't mail in their then-meaningful game with Eastern a few days later), then BSU, WMU and CMU would have tied for the MAC West title. All three teams would have split their head-to-head matchups with one another. The next tiebreaker?

Overall record? Nope.

Highest BCS ranking (or any other ranking)? Nope.

(Hey, I know record/ranking doesn't always reflect strength, but it behooves a non-BCS league to put their highest-ranked team forward in the championship game when all else is even).

Points for? Points against? Point differential? Nope, nope and nope.

The MAC's second tie-breaker in the event of a three-way tie is... best combined record... of your non-division "crossover" league opponents.

I mean, could we find a way to decide a championship that a team has any less control over? Non-division crossover opponents are assigned -- at random -- by the MAC office. Yet, had BSU lost to WMU, there's a good chance that CMU is MAC West champion based on the fact that their MAC East opponents won one additional game than BSU's did.

It takes effort to come up with a system that moronic. It makes just as much sense to award the tie-breaker to the team with the highest avg. game-time temperature.

ICBM @ 29
The SEC tiebreaker only mentions the 2nd highest ranked team. As such, the ranking of the third team would be irrelevant. I still agree with you, though, that TT would have as much right to complain as UT does now if UT had been selected to represent the B12 South, the home-neutral field argument notwithstanding.

Here's another topic for discussion: I know the proprietor of this blog isn't a big fan of individual awards and the discussion thereof, but I'll bring this up anyway. Who thinks Colt McCoy will get pushed over the top by voters who seek to sorta "make amends" for Texas getting left out? I'm sure he'd rather be playing in Miami in January, but the Heisman might offer some small comfort.

How does Texas Tech factor into the SEC rules hypo? They are within 5 spots of Texas, which I think means we are back in the same mess of OU trumping TT, TT trumping UT, and UT trumping OU.

Every argument you can make why UT should be the division winner could be made by TT.

Clemson-

What's the rush? Here's a few recent or semi-recent hires of interim head coaches:

Williams, Bobby; Michigan State: Set the program back 5 years.

Stewart, Bill; WVU: Finished behind Pitt and Cincy when he had a LOT more talent than anyone else in the BigEast.

You've got a good program that could dominate the mediocre ACC with the right hire. Take some time, kick a few tires........

I could be wrong about this, but I don't think Coop is a UF fan (Clemson, fwiw). And, if he was at the game in August, I'm sure he witnessed plenty of Bama arrogance firsthand.

I'll take him as recruiting coordinator and OL coach any day.

And, there is a precident involved. Back in 1970, Bob Tyler was supposed to be the next HC at Ole Piss when Johnny Vaught retired. Vaught had an unexpected heart attack midseason, Tyler was Vaught's choice, but the Khayats & Pooles made "Loser" Kinard the HC at the season's end. He was fired in the middle of the season in 1973.

Tyler, an Ole Piss grad, became HC at MSU in 1972. In 1973, he croomed #1 Florida.

Re: #13: italiangator

I'm surprised it took 5 posts after mine to see that. We all knew that the Irish were going to get smoked. The point spread was around 32.5 right before kickoff. The Ducks/Beaver game was something totally different. While ND's offense might have sucked, at least their defense didn't pull quite the !ole! that the Beavers did and give up 694 yards.

Congrats, JacketandCoke on the biggest win evah! North Avenue's team played hard and took advantage of every break they were given. 1IARB!

And, since this is generally a Florida board, I'll simply note that makes it 14 of the last 18. At least Johnson didn't call for an endzone dance party.

I don't have any problem with TX-OK for the BCSNCG if Bama loses -- they're both at least as deserving as Florida, Bama, USC, Tx Tech, PSU, etc. The system sucks, those teams have at least as much a say as any.

Bama's SOS is 88th, Florida 13th, OU 1st, and Texas 5th...I'm just saying. They are a tough, physical team that has played very well this year, but that schedule is not what it was on paper at the beginning of the season. Hat's off to Bama...if they can beat Florida, then I will be a believer. I sure would love to see USC play Bama or Florida in the NCG...USC's defense is out of this world.

Imagine this for just a second...Florida beats bama in a really close game...OU barely gets by Mizzu...Texas moves to #1 in the BCS, and OU stays at #2. Now that would be interesting. Florida is way behind Texas and OU in the computers and it would take a big jump in the human polls to put them in over OU and Texas.

I could only imagine the outrage if after all the games are played Texas and OU are playing each other for the NC. It would be a great game by the way...and why not? Florida got to play FSU in a rematch that turned out to be the deciding factor in the 96 NC.

Whoa, dudes. Kiffen isn't as impotent as you think, and Orgeron has proved himself to be a good position coach, even if he did suck as The Man. He kicked ass as OL coach at SC. And if Kiffen does bring in his old man as DC, I think they'll surprise people. At the very least the Vols will be beat the scummy little bruins. Badly.
