BRAVERY IN FANDOM

Via Pete at Fanhouse: the award for cowardice in fandom goes to the Huntsville--Madison County Auburn club for the following announcement about their annual "Beat Bama" party.

Congratulations: you just confirmed your fear of John Parker Wilson, which should result in your collective testicles shearing from your body in opposite directions in protest.

I can handle a loss to UF in the SECCG. I’ll be pissed but I can handle it.

I cannot handle another loss to AU. That game scares the shit out of me.

OMG! Where to begin?I would cancel that party too, then I would fire Tubbs so his lil streak would be intact. Really, Auburn, you are making the comedy too easy. First it was the non-stop crowing about how,with the unstoppable Tony Franklin Spread Offense, how easy it would be to get 7. It truly is sad.
Pathetic. And you let Georgia sleepwalk all over ya at home. We were really hoping to beat a “good” Auburn team, but a crippled wheelchair version will be just as fun, just knowing that Vandy will be bowl eligible and Auburn wont….I think Gump sums it up best:

Tater:

UA comes into this game as the better team that is better coached with the better record.

Yep, right where we want ’em.

Seriously, AU has to make this another “ugly” game (just like last weekend) to have a shot to win at the end. It is unlikely, but not un-possible.

You have a team with nothing to lose playing a team with everything to lose. That is a dangerous situation for the latter.

I remember the 2002 Iron Bowl where Bama was supposed to smash Auburn in Tuscaloosa. Auburn was wracked with injuries and had just lost a heartbreaker to Georgia. Alabama was clearly the better team and was heavily favored. We all know how that ended.

That being said, I do see Bama ending the streak this time. I won’t be surprised if Auburn does manage to make it interesting, however.

War Eagle, regardless.

Good to see that Alabama fans never change. Love the proclamation of how “pathetic” and “sad” Auburn is. AFTER THEY’VE BEATEN YOU SIX YEARS IN A ROW.

You’re #1, enjoy it. Beat Auburn, then you can laugh at their ‘comedy’ of a down year.

And thanks for making me defend Auburn, assholes.

A) The Barn game, being nothing more than a rivalry game, should be of concern. No matter how bad a season a rival might have there is always the chance that they get there act together for a few hours on any particular Saturday. The huge upsets by inferior rivals are numerous. But, this year, I think the losing streak works in Alabama’s favor. Undefeated and #1 in the country, playing a 5 win team, with a guaranteed trip tot eh SEC Championship game…where they will face the team that everyone thinks is unstoppable might give a team cause to overlook the game at hand…but with a losing streak whose reference is the first words of decipherable english out of any farmer’s mouth to avenge I think that focus shouldn’t be too hard the Tide to obtain.

B) Florida is not invincible. (Besides, I thought that U$C* was the greatest team in the history of college football and it isn’t like they will be showing up in Atlanta so why be intimidated by Florida?)

  • Say what? Maybe that was last year’s team they were talking about in September.**
  • The year before?*
  • But Mark May keeps saying…

I reasonably expect Auburn to make a game of it, too. However, the Georgia game has taught us that even if the kids were to have a chance to win in the closing minutes, the coaches will find a way to righteously fuck it up.

by weagle251 on Nov 18, 2008 11:40 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

@11,

You neglected to mention the fact that Fran had already packed his bags for College Station prior to the 2002 game and, consequently, was completely disengaged and had the team woefully unprepared to play.

I’d say the circumstances are just a little bit different this time around.

by MSR on Nov 18, 2008 11:41 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

The closest parallel to this game from our perspective seems to be the 1992 game. Bama was #2 and undefeated; AU was 5-5 and playing to send Coach Dye out a winner. AU played Bama to a 0-0 tie at halftime, before Langham pick-sixed Stan White down the sideline, and Bama won 17-0.

by RIP Logan Young on Nov 18, 2008 11:44 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

@12,

I fail to see how the fact that AU has beaten Bama six years in a row makes it any less “sad” and “pathetic” that their fans completely cash-out once they have a down year. Come to think of it, AU’s recent string of succcess makes their fans’ selling-out all the more pathetic.

by MSR on Nov 18, 2008 11:44 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

+1 on thoroughly enjoying the lack of an apostrophe in “this years.”

I’d love to see one of two things happen in this game, though: 1) Bama just beats the puppy dog shit out of Auburn, or 2) Auburn wins.

In my opinion, a seven pt. Bama win wouldn’t be that interesting to a non-Iron Bowl person. What would be interesting, though, would be Auburn rising up in the name of Saint Tubby and blasting Bama back into the Bear age again or Auburn just laying the smack down and winning 41-7.

@ugacrow Sign me up for the smackdown version, plzkthx.

This game always makes me nervous. Rivalry games truly make you realize that you can just throw that record out of the window. There’s no doubt in my mind, however, that Alabama’s team is going to be playing to avenge the last six years’ (did I get the apostrophe right?) humiliation. That can be a good or a bad thing. Either Bama will absolutely annihilate Auburn next Saturday, or they’ll be so revved up that they’ll make mistakes. I’m counting on our coach to make sure that mistake part doesn’t happen.

Roll Tide.

Hell, I wasn’t basing my statement solely on the actions of the Huntsville-Madison County Auburn Club. This instance is merely illustrative of a characteristic I’ve long observed among the vast majority of AU fans encountered.

It’s been nothing short of remarkable to witness just how quickly they’ve gone from nonstop talk/gloating about AU football to “I don’t even care anymore” or (my personal favorite) their sudden and timely gaining of perspective (e.g., “there are more important things in life—it’s just football.”).

None of this should be surprising and/or controversial. After all, it’s all entirely consistent with Little Brother Syndrome.

by MSR on Nov 18, 2008 12:16 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I do find it ironic that Bama fans are claiming Auburn fans are “cashing out” on their team now that they’re having a down year.

In 2002 the Alabama car flags were flying from every fan’s vehicle you saw here in the state. They were put away until 2005 when they were brought back out again and then put away once more when Bama lost to Auburn again. The flags were out in full force when Saban was hired but put away again after the La-Monroe debacle.

After the Georgia game this year they once again reappeared.

Don’t talk to me about fair weather fans. We all have them, but the rednecks around the state of Alabama who pull for the Crimson Tide are the worst.

@29,

Boy, that’s some compelling evidence you cited (made up?) there.

Bama fans can reasonably be accused of a lot of things, but being “fairweather” isn’t one of them. Bryant-Denny was filled to capacity throughout the duration of the Shula Error. Hell, you can’t say the same for Jordan-Hare after a mere stretch of a few bad games (AU fans have been giving their tickets away this season). What’s more indicative of the level of fan loyalty than that?

I will say that I am pretty scared of Kodi Burns. Kodi Burns is an electrifying quarterback than can beat you with his arm and legs. Kodi Burns is ultra quick in the pocket and virtually impossible to stop in a one-on-one situation. Kodi Burns is the type of quarterback that can put so much pressure on a defense because of his ability to make a play outside of the pocket. Kodi Burns is also a good passer that shows all the throws. Kodi Burns is a “Michael Vick” type of signal caller and very exciting to watch.

Yeh, I am sure this years annual family gathering to watch the Bama/AU game will end in fisticuffs once everyone gets their fill of Makers Mark and Jim Beam(for the older generation) since half of the family are dyed in the wool Bama alums(couple have played for Bear and Perkins) and the other half are Auburn FANS, with one alum who is a Horse Dr.=Vet and another that is Chemical Salesman to farmers. The rules are
1. No throwing drinks on the plasma or on your rival.
2. Cursing is allowed, only at the TV.
3. No physical contact with your rival.
4. If physical contact is made, no hitting in the face or the crotch, and that goes for the women too, since they talk the most crap when they are drunk on wine.
5. Loser must, on demand, sing the rivals fight song.WITH FEELING!
6. If you are losing by 14 pts, you must fetch the drinks for your rival.
7. If the police show up, blame the Auburn fans since the majority of the local police force pull for Bama
I am sure rules 1-4 will be broken by kickoff.
Once Bama clinches it, there

MSR – If I could post a link to a picture, I could show you a photograph of the stands as they appeared just before the half. The stadium was nearly full at the time. However, I can’t disagree with you on how they looked in the 4th quarter, especially the Student Section (think LSU/Troy). Regardless of whether or not they stayed for the entire game, there was still a large number of Auburn fans that spent their time and their money to be there that Saturday. That’s still 85K tickets sold. That’s still a solid fanbase. They’re not going anywhere regardless of what you want to believe, and if we had bandwagoners, then good riddance. They can throw a Script A magnet on their car like every other sidewalk alum in the state.

Tater – “Hapless” has been the adjective I’ve used to describe our team this season.

Hell, maybe the host of the party at the Hunstville Chapter is sick or out of town or anything else, and not just “scared of the Saban Smackdown”. Jesus- what kind of pussies do you really think these people are, and what kind of desparation for anything to talk shit about are you in that you get so excited about this one thing?
Alabama should win this game, but I doubt people are cancelling plans to watch the game, or have a party, or anything like that. If anyone does, their testicles and fandom should be recalled.
Nobody who is a true fan of this rivalry is stupid enough to think that it’s a foregone conclusion that UA will win. Likely, but not a given.
And no true fan ever gives up on their team or “puts things in perspective” and realizes that football (or hating the rival) isn’t 100% important.
You may hear AU fans talking less shit this year, but that’s becuase they have less shit to talk- no big wins to brag about (except for 3-2, that was great), and why/how do you want AU fans to talk shit when they have nothing to brag about? Most would tell you that straight up. Bad year. Maybe 2 or 3. Shit happens. Only ignorant Alabama fans turn from talking shit about their team when winning to talking shit about “the glory of their tradition” and the Bear and “12” and shit when their teams aren’t winning. Instead of trying to find reasons to talk more ignorant shit when Au is losing, it appears that the concensus have juse decided to shut up about it. Not tuck tail and run, but shut up. Not jump off the bandwagon, but shut up.
shit- enjoy the silence. you’ve been waiting on it for 6 years and you can’t even fucking shut up and enjoy it…

@50,

Actually, as the linked-to entry indicates, the party was cancelled due to “lack of interest.”

Regardless, let me get this straight: AU fans run their mouths incessantly for the past six years, all jacked up over beating UA when its program was generally at an all-time low, and subsequently when the AU program is being run into the ground at a rate that would make Mike DuBose jealous, Bama fans are expected to “shut up and enjoy” the fact that you guys have finally been forced to shut the f*ck up (for the time being)?

Yep, sounds just like Little Brother—antagonizing the hell out of Big Brother until about to receive your comeuppance, at which time you bitch for the whole thing to stop.

@49, weagle:

Again, one of your own on attendance for OOC games at Jordan-Hare:

“[Jordan-Hare expansion] is not going to happen any time soon. Why should it? My God, we are 3 years removed from an undefeated 13-0 season and we still can’t fill the stadium seats on a regular basis. Someone posted earlier that when we start winning and appearing in the top 10 on a regular basis that the stadium will be expanded then.. What? We’ve been winning for years now and I continue to see empty seats throughout the stadium in almost ALL of the OCC games in JHS. When we sell out tickets and fill the stadium regardless of who the opponent is on a consistant basis, then we can discuss an expansion.

Many posters keep talking about the Bama expansion. Why? Bama has had the worst record over the past 10 years than in their entire history and they have sold-out and filled that stadium to capacity every game for years. Even with the expansion Bama did, the waiting list for tickets is a mile long.

It’s as simple as supply and demand. When we decide to buy the tickets and come to the games and stay for the ENTIRE GAME, we will show the rest of the country that we need more room. That the Auburn fans demand the tickets. Until that happens, I just don’t think we can justify a multi-million dollar expansion just to see even more seats empty on game day."

You’re obviously not very bright. My providing you with a post from a fellow AU fan had nothing to do with the relative sizes of our members—instead, it was quite clearly intended to speak to our ongoing exchange about fan support, in general, and game attendance, specifically, at AU. You see, he (like the other AU fan cited to) openly admits the reality that you’ve repeatedly denied (i.e., that attendance at AU games is not particularly strong when the team is struggling and/or the opponent is not big-name).

It’s both remarkable and sad that this must be explained to you.

I may not be bright, but I know a strawman when I see one. Your initial premise was that (all) Auburn Fans have cashed out. You never really define cashed out. Does that mean the stadium is empty? Half full? You’re using a relatively small sample size of “people I know” and the comments (opinions) of two Auburn fans on the internet to support your claim. Sorry, but that just doesn’t hold water. You have opinions. I have numbers in the form of ticket sales.

Is every seat in the house filled, even when a sellout is on the books? In my personal experience, sometimes yes, sometimes no. But it’s on the order of 1 or 2%, not tens of thousands of absent fans or multiple empty sections in the stadium. I can also be frank and say I hate to see people head for the exits when there’s still three minutes on the clock, or when they leave for the last quarter of the homecoming game. But those tickets are still sold; that money is still coming into the AD. So if they sold 85K+ for HC, and had a sellout for UGA, who exactly is cashing out?

You can believe what you want to believe, but your claim simply isn’t true. Sorry to break that to you.

MSR,
I keep hearing that Auburn only beats Alerbammer when Alerbammer is down. Try seeing how Alerbammer did in 1992, 1999 and this year. Then try and come up with how Auburn did in those years.
While Bammers don’t like to admit it……………the “tradishun rich program” was 22nd in winning percentage over the last 25 years going into the 2008 season. Alerbammer has been “down” since the Berry Bryant left. You are not what you think you are. Go put your black, mesh, Jack Daniels cap on and go yell Rowe Tahd.

Have mercy—trying to explain anything to you aubs is an exercise in futility, as your responses put up a damn nearly impenetrable wall of ignorance and incoherence.

@68,

Can you please point me to where I posted that the only times AU has beaten Bama has been when the latter is down? I made no such statement—rather, I stated (in passing), that the recent 6 year streak has taken place during a period that could reasonably be considered an all-time low for UA football. I didn’t realize that statement was controversial.

In any event, two things: (1) the statement was accurate; and, more importantly, (2) the statement in question was wholly ancillary to the point being made. But I suppose since you couldn’t reasonably take issue with the core argument, you’re only resort was to pick out some statement entirely unnecessary to the argument’s viability, wholly misrepresent it, and then proceed to take it apart. Impressive.

@62 weagle,

While you’ve repeatedly demonstrated the reading comprehension skills of an 8 year old, making it quite clear that continuing to respond to your nonsense is a complete waste of my time, I’m going to give it one more shot.

First of all, I never stated that all AU fans had “cashed out.” You see, I was generalizing about a phenomenon I’ve witnessed among the AU fan base this season. When one generalizes, he does not intend to suggest that every single member of the group about which he is generalizing is guilty of the behavior, characteristic, etc., being ascribed to the group. So, much like your fellow aub, you attribute to me a statement that was never made and then proceed to argue with it—and you’re the one talking about others’ straw men?

Secondly, you’re obviously very confused about how things in our exchange have proceeded. If you’ll remember, you took issue with my suggesting that AU fans were relatively fairweather (again, that isn’t intended to suggest that every single one of them is that way—it simply means that the fan base as a whole has that characteristic to a greater degree than those fan bases comparable in other respects) by ridiculously arguing that UA fans were at least as fairweather. I then suggested that game attendance was a good barometer for measuring the fan bases’ relative levels of loyalty, and pointed out that UA has always filled Bryant-Denny irrespective of on-the-field success (or lack thereof), while the same can’t be said for AU. That assertion was corroborated by objective acknowledgements by AU fans themselves.

Your response? Either (a) inexplicably continuing to deny this reality by pointing to “official” ticket sales figures which mean next to nothing (remember AU giving away hundreds of basketball tickets and then counting those among the tickets sold? remember the 35,000 announced attendance for the spring game?)—particularly in the context of a discussion of fan loyalty/enthusiasm—or (b) confusing the argument entirely.

Ultimately, I could give a damn whether you’re willing to acknowledge that AU fans have a relative tendency to be front-runners (i.e., when AU is good, Auburn football is all the care about; when the outlook is more bleak, it’s an afterthought). All one has to do is watch/listen to AU fans when the team is struggling (e.g., the Huntsville-Madison County Auburn Club) and observe the empty seats in Jordan-Hare on homecoming to know the truth—the proof is in the pudding.

Hope you ‘necks enjoy the next several years. I’m sure that deep down you know it’s going to be a long, bumpy ride down the road of irrelevance, but it’s undoubtedly a trip with which you guys are quite familiar by now. Or, as Trev Alberts so tersely put it: “And that’s why you’re Auburn.”

To #64 Wes….when you get 9 in a row we can talk. Give me a break.

Nine in a row? You mean, like over a quarter of a century ago?

And the Bammers talk of irrelevance. Puh-leeze.

Why don’t you guys just try stringing two in a row? That at least happened only a decade ago.

Bragging about wins that have yet to occur is about a juvenile as you can get. Typical for a Bama fan.

You mean like bragging about “7” right after getting 6 and, in some cases, before getting 6?

Hilarious.

Stop living in the past, Aubies.

To hell with all of this word parsing.

Aubie’s are a bunch of fucktard’s, and we are about to shove six of Tuberneck’s fingers up his ass.
