You wonder how in the hell they fell asleep vs. Ole Miss. The way they have played since has been impressive. I would love to see them play SC, but they will get Texas, barring upsets, in the BCSCG. I don’t think TT can beat Oklahoma in Norman.

@Roaming, don’t worry- if there’s anyone who can appreciate this, it’s SOS- I’d like to think that somewhere deep down, he’s proud of what happened out there (of UF, obvs, not USC). Ah, Josh.
I’m afraid it is actually a newsworthy beat-down, since South Carolina was a top 25 team and was the SEC leader in total defense and top 3 in defense against the run and scoring defense.
Overrated? maybe. But on the statistics alone, it’s newsworthy. If Penn State or Southern California beat a top 25 team by 50 points, you’d be hearing just as much about it.

As a point of clarification, NONE of the cadets at The Citadel have a mandatory military service requirement by virtue their enrollment in the college. That said, many accept ROTC scholarships, which do obligate students to future military service. Military colleges like The Citadel, VMI and Norwich (in Vermont) are not federally-operated military academies – the former two are state colleges, while Norwich is private – and by law cannot compel post-graduate service. With all due respect to the cadets of these institutions, who voluntarily undergo a difficult, disciplined life in lieu of college fun, they are essentially just “playing army” for for four years. [My dad is a VMI alum, FWIW… not a chance in hell I was going there]

Washington State, Houston, Missouri State, Troy, Florida Atlantic, UTEP, Arkansas, Rice, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Washington, TCU, Eastern Washington, Nevada, SMU, and UMass
Those are the sum total of the non-conf teams that Tech, Texas, Oklahoma, and Ok. State have played. SO, if Alabama and Florida have locked up their invites by only playing chumps and a down SEC conf. schedule then what can we all say about the Big 12?
Looks like remarkably similar scheduling…and results.

Can we talk about the gambler’s delight (or horror) that was the end of Stanford-USC? I had USC -23.5 as the last game in one of my three-team parlays. USC tied and droning on until suddenly it opens a can and takes a solid 20-point-lead. A garbage-time TD with 1:33 left and USC is covering. But then… Stanford returns the KO to their own 40… and then… gets 1st down after 1st down, eventually driving to the 15 with 3 seconds left and setting up to kick a FG to cut it to a harmless 25-point USC win… but then CARROLL calls timeout, grins at Harbaugh, daring him to go for the TD… which he does, and Stanford converts with no time left to leave me once again awed by the power of Vegas.

Let me give you guys a scenario and you tell me what you think will and/or should happen:
OU beats TT, causing a 3-way tie for 1st in B12 South. Let’s say OU has the highest BCS rating and plays Mizzou…and loses. Also, let’s say UF beats Alabama.
Obviously UF would be in the BCSCG, but who would join them? None of the teams with a real shot of getting there would be conference champions (assuming Ore St wins out). I remember saying last year that I wanted to see a Georgia-LSU BCSCG, but was repeatedly told that a team that didn’t make it’s conference championship game shouldn’t play for the MNC. Similar logic applied the previous year, keeping Michigan out of the BCSCG.

I remember saying last year that I wanted to see a Georgia-LSU BCSCG, but was repeatedly told that a team that didnt make its conference championship game shouldnt play for the MNC.
I think most people would say that a non conference champion shouldn’t play for the MNC if there’s another viable conference champion. In your scenario there are no 1-loss conference champions other than Florida, so I think then you start looking at the non champs out of necessity. Of course then when you look you realize it’s just a clusterfuck, and then you do dumb things like start considering Utah…
If your scenario happens, December 7 is going to be an interesting day.

And with Michigan in ‘06, don’t forget that the voters were perfectly willing to vote them into the MNC over 1-loss Big East champ Louisville. So even in ‘06 the Conference Champion argument wasn’t overwhelming by itself.

TJ-
Penn St. would be a 1-loss conference champion. I guarantee UF would end up playing Texas under my scenario, though (or alternatively, Oklahoma , if Texas ended up losing to Mizzou in the B12CG).
Depending on the UF-Bama score (let’s say UF wins 13-10 in 2OT), Bama could make a decent case for being there too. I think the antipathy is for 2 teams from the same conference playing for the MNC, not necessarily for a non-conference champion playing for it.

Memo From the Respect Dept:
There can be NO RESPECT in this bullshit BCS system. When you play the #1 defensive team in your conference, you MUST hang as many points on them as you can for any chance to make it to the “big dance”.
Style points matter, lop-sided victories matter, and the TDs that Tebow didn’t get a chance to score against Vandy, Georgia and the other games where he was pulled from in 3rd or early 4th QTR matter to his heisman chances.
Why isn’t Texas or Texas Tech taking their QBs out of games early? Maybe cuz they have NO DEFENSE and must score 7 or 8 TDs a game to have a chance of winning?
Personally, I want to witness Tebow being the 1st player to ever collect 3 Heismans, 3 SEC Championship rings, and 3 National Championship rings. In today’s college football atmosphere, you can’t do that by taking your foot off the opposition’s throat, or by showing mercy and not curb-stomping their skulls into little tiny pieces each and every week.
I for one, felt kinda sorry for Spurrier yesterday, and respect him a great deal. He’s a Gator and always will be.
Don’t take to beat down personally….the OBC didn’t.
by Mich-Placed Gators on Nov 16, 2008 12:12 PM EST reply actions
Ah, Mich-placed Gator, now I know why I cheer for every miserable Florida season as possible. They destroy people like you. Tebow/Meyer could win the SEC 3x and still be classy. If they take care of business there, they would have a chance to win three national titles without embarrassing lesser teams. As for the Heisman race, well you have me there. Big stats are where it is at, but the award itself is ridiculous. Can one guy really be THE best college player? Think about last year. Tebow was important to the Gators, but Oregon completely fell apart when Dixon went down—so isn’t that even more reason to vote for him. Besides, such individual honors should be beneath such an upstanding guy like Tebow.
Basically, Florida likes to run up the score because that is who they are, not because of any necessity.
by Meg on Nov 16, 2008 12:28 PM EST reply actions
Based on the 1996 Fiesta Bowl/Nebraska incident, I would bet Spurrier actually would be upset if you didn’t keep running up the score, playing your players, etc.
by History_Ant on Nov 16, 2008 12:47 PM EST reply actions
Meg,
What part of my very first sentence did you not understand? Florida slept walked thru the game against Ole Miss, and because of that loss, they must destroy every one else for a chance to make it to the MNC game.
Most people believe they are most likely one of the two top teams in the country, but because we are in the age of the BCS, where multiple polls and computer rankings determine what 2 teams, regardless of whether they win their conference, make it to the MNC game, teams must get noticed in a big way.
I would venture to guess that 75% of the people who vote in either poll do one thing before they place their vote…look at the final score. Florida wins “classy” yesterday by a score of 28 to 17 and they think “hummm…maybe Florida isn’t red hot anymore”. They don’t take into consideration that UF’s 2nd and 3rd string played the entire 2nd half.
If Florida had won all the games since the Ole’ Miss slip up by, let’s say a “classy” margin of 10 to 14 points, do you really think they would get the nod over a one loss Penn St., one loss Texas, one loss TT, or one loss USC team…not to mention a zero loss Utah or zero loss Boise St. team?
There’s no bonus points for staying “classy”.
As far as the Heisman, I’m absolutely positive that I (and other Gator fans) care WAY more about it than Tebow does. He is an upstanding young man and a very positive roll model, whether you or anyone else outside the Gator Nation cares to admit it or not.
…and Florida isn’t running up the score because of “who they are.” Urban Meyer is being paid millions of dollars a year (like many other coaches) to do one thing. Bring championships to his employer…THE University of Florida.
Right now you hate him for one reason and one reason only, because he is doing it better than your coach.
It’s a game, not life….and the ends DO justify the means.

I think the media makes more of the “take a player out so he don’t get hurt” argument than what it really worth.
Sure, I wonder about the same thing. But usually the moment you start playing “not to get hurt” is the moment you do get hurt.
I think I’ve seen more knees blown out on people standing on the sideline to past few years than blown out on the field.
..and does a player stay sharp and focused if he’s only playing a half every game? What’s that? 5 or 6 offensive drives? Maybe 8 or 10 passes?
..and where does this paranoid thinking stop? Do you show up at Tebow and Harvin’s dorm room daily and wheel them to class in a wheel chair so they don’t twist on ankle on the side walk?
by Mich-Placed Gator on Nov 16, 2008 1:50 PM EST reply actions
I really don’t think that margin of victory is as important as everyone thinks it is, anymore. Your program’s name alone will sway the votes and if that name is an OMG ESS EEE CEE team you are going to pull more votes than PSU, USC, Utah, etc because everyone has conceded for the last 1000 years that your conference should not only be awarded a berth in the MNC every year, but the Superbowl, as well.
Anyone who knows anything about college football knows that it’s not always if you lose a game, but when you lose it. Lose early and people will forgive and forget down the line. USC lost early to OrSt and they can’t shake it while UF lost to Ole Miss and it’s all ok, now. That has nothing to do with the final scores but more that USC is plagued by the Pac 10.
While I am no fan of USC I would be bitching like hell and if I were a fan of UF I would be damn happy where I am and stop posting this ’don’t take your foot off the gas’ horseshit. If Tebow or whoever ended up jacked folded the wrong way on the field while you were up 35 I would honestly say that you had it coming to you and I hope your shit sandwich comes with ’slaw or fries.

…and maybe the PAC-10 should become the PAC-12 so they can have north and south divisions, and then USC (the winner of the south) could have a rematch with those hairy beavers (the winner of the north), and could over come that slip-up. That’s what REAL conferences do anyway.
That goes for you Big-10 homers too. Just add Notre Lame, and please STOP IT with the "we gotta be done playing “football” by Thanksgiving" BS.
OMG, what a novel idea, an 8 team play-off, with the winner of each conference championship game getting an invite. Then maybe staying “classy” could actually work.

Basically, Mich, you are wanting the cake and the taste. You want to blow-up teams, but also want people to like you/your team, or at least rationalize why that team is what they are. Honestly, my supreme dislike for Meyer has nothing to do with what is on the field. I can acknowledge he is a very good coach. I just think he is a small egomaniac who more times than not is the first coach throwing anyone and everyone under the bus when things don’t go right. Let’s not even get started on his "no tolerance ( if you aren’t a starter) " policy. He obviously cares more about winning a MNC than just about anything else, and he is willing to do anything to get there. Fine. He has accomplished his goals. I just love it when Florida fans wonder why others are so happy to stick it to them when the chance arises. As for Tebow, I have nothing against him except that he can’t be bothered to shake hands after a loss. In every other aspect, he appears to be a very fine young man.

Mich:
Auburn 2004… yeah, that ‘awesome’ team that beat VT 16-13 while USC beat OU by 36. You did not want a piece of that team that year so be happy running around with Utah fans from ‘04 holding up a ’we got screwed’ sign in front of all the undefeated Penn State, Boise State, Utah, Marshall, Tulanes and other undefeated teams that got no shot at it over the years.
As for your $EC championship game and your REAL conference, let us not forget that the game was not invented for BCS purposes but for revenue purposes many years earlier. Should every conference have a championship game? Sure why not and any reasonable fan from those conferences would agree. The conference championships allow the 12 and the SEC that one last shot at the polls when everyone else is idle so enjoy that gift as long as you can. Most of the Big 10 ‘homers’ and Pac 10’ers all want a conference championship but the presidents are too happy playing it out in the Rose Bowl in that antiquated tie-in.
And for the 8 team playoff? Thanks for joining the rest of the world who wants one…

Oh come on Erik, you should know by now that games must be settled on the field.
You can’t assume that Team A would kill Team B on any given Saturday based on how Team A performed against Team C and Team B performed against Team D. In the words of Chris Berman “that’s why they play the games”
As far as the BCS and the bowl system in general, people will argue until the cows come home about this, but there’s no doubt in my mind that a playoff system can be developed and implemented that would bring in just as much revenue and generate just as much interest as what we have now.

I think the big 12 qbs (McCoy, Bradford, and Harrell) are all better than Tebow. Plus, I don’t think they like to touch penis like Tebow does, which makes them better people as well.

Meg,
Can you give me an example of a starter with a disipline problem that Meyer dealt with lighter than he would a non-starter? …or an example of “he sold his soul to win?” All I’ve seen or read about the man differs from your opinion.
I wasn’t aware that Tebow didn’t shake hands after a loss or acted in any unsportsman like manner while at UF.

Mich-
I am in complete agreement with you on the playoff thing. It sickens me that FBS is the only division of really any organized sport that does this crap and we will be stuck with it for years to come. Even Obama said he would like to see one and the BCS oversight committee president hammered his suggestion down a day later. If the president (elect) can’t get the BCS to listen I have no idea how long we will be suffering through this.
—Screw it… I am gonna start watching D1AA…. errrr… the FCS. GO CAL POLY SAN LUIS OBISPO MUSTANGS!!! I swear I am going to buy a shirt online right now..

Does Meg ever post about anything on here except her hatred of Urban Meyer?
Just wondering.

@94
South Carolina @ Florida 2006
Jarvis Moss was caught smoking pot the week before that game, and Meyer “wasn’t notified” until a few days after the game.
He would later go on to block what would be the game-tying extra point and game-winning field goal.
Yes, I’m still bitter about that.

@ 97
Funny how history gets skewed to support one’s opinion:
Here’s what actually happened, in the words of online news reports that I can find. I remembered Moss getting in trouble for that, but could not remember the timing.
Several outlets are reporting that last Saturdays kick blocking hero Jarvis Moss will be suspended for failing a drug test.
WCJB-TV 20 Sports has learned Florida defensive end Jarvis Moss has been suspended for Saturdays game against Western Carolina. Moss tested positive for marijuana. After practice Tuesday night, Gator head coach Urban Meyer would only say Were dealing with something right now, but Im not ready to announce that.
…and you remember Florida’s best defensive lineman, Marcus Thomas? I do. Meyer did what he had to with him too:
from ESPN "Jarvis Moss, suspended for a game for marijuana use, went to Denver, which on Sunday drafted another “problem player” from the Gators, defensive tackle Marcus Thomas in the fourth round.
Thomas is considered to have first-round talent. But after being suspended for a game last season for marijuana use, he was kicked off the team by coach Urban Meyer for leaving Gainesville with friends to go to Orlando against Meyer’s orders."

@91- Auburn would have been as hopelessly overmatched against shiny Southern Cal as that poor 1992 Alabama team or the sorry 2006 Florida. Between teams like that and the SEC’s piss poor record in BCS games, I have no idea why their teams keep getting voter love.
