The punt with ~2:25 to play was a 50-50 call. You could make an argument to punt and play field position or to sack up and go for it on 4th and 7. I can’t really say that the announcers were being dumb by questioning that call.

The one I think they were dead wrong about was about going for the 2 pt conversion when GT just scored to bring the deficit to 2 pts with like 7 minutes to play. If you kick the PAT, you’re still down by 1 and need a FG to win. If you go for two and don’t convert, you’re down by 2 and need a FG to win. There’s literally no difference in those situations. If you make the 2 pt conversion, you’re tied. There was no reason whatsoever to kick a PAT in that situation, and football announcers/analysts, especially former players, should have the football knowledge to realize that.

Kicking a PAT when you’re down by 2 midway thru the 4th quarter is pointless, especially when you’re in a defensive struggle.

While he wasn’t actually my high school coach, Johnson was at Ga. Southern when I went to football camp there while I was in high school. I can therefore confirm that he’s been that jowly and cantankerous since the Clinton administration, and probably before. God love him.

I can’t speak for this Gannon dude but I’ve seen enough games broadcast by David Norrie to know beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is a certified, card carrying moron. During the 2005 PSU @ Northwestern game he managed to pull off what I had previously thought to be impossible. David Norrie made me appreciate Pam Ward!

Simple question General, I’m trying to help you out here. Why do you think going for it on 4th down was wrong there?

BTW, your answer cannot be “because they didn’t make it.” I’m looking for real honest analysis here where you can explain how punting was the better choice to win the football game.

Wagner: I was talking to a Navy fan and he said he follows the coverage and that he noticed something and I’m just going to put it to you. He says that it seems like when Navy loses you blame the players, ie we can’t execute fundamental plays, but that the success of the team the last four years has been attributed to brilliant coaching. How do you respond to that?

Johnson: Whatever he thinks. I don’t go down to McDonald’s and start second-guessing his job so he ought to leave me alone.

Wagner: But do you feel like it can’t be both ways?

Johnson: You know what? I could care less. I’m old enough where I could give a crap what the fans think or what you think to put it in a nutshell.

Wagner: Wins and losses are evenly distributed as far as credit and blame, right?

Johnson: If you could ever find one time that I said we won the game because of brilliant strategy I will kiss your butt at city dock and give you two days to draw a crowd. Find it and bring it to me. Tell that guy that if he wants to talk to me I live at (address given but deleted for the transcript) I will be right there. Come ring my doorbell and I will be glad to talk to him.

Actually, Johnson did start bitching about it… The writer asked him about it and he answered the question honestly. Plain and simple.

Now, if you want to talk about bitching, look no further than Mark Richt over at Georgia whining about Moreno’s leap not being included in the Top Ten on ESPN. Who cares? Teams have crazy plays happen all the time that never make it on TV.
