I actually don’t mind Haden. Hammond on the other hand is a joke. As someone mentioned, all the guy has to do in the fall is call ND home games. So, unlike most announcers, one of the two teams on the field is the same every single week. Yet somehow it seems that at least once per week he screws up an ND player’s name or completely mis-identifies a player. He also seems to be easily confused about what is actually happening on the field. It seems that fairly often Hammond will be saying something like “and it’s caught for a first down…” while the rest of the world can clearly see the ball rolling down the field after an incomplete pass. It blows my mind how he can be so lost.

All domers in the know turn down the audio on the TV and turn up the Westwood One coverage, and have done so for the last 15 years. Even with the recent Westwood personality reshuffle, it still blows away NBC’s morons. Allen Pinkett actually knows enough football to make a random semi-valuable comment each series.

Indeed. Last week against SDSU they kept wondering why Clausen hadn’t been called for intentional grounding because the ball clearly hadn’t made it back to the line of scrimmage–ignoring the very obvious running back that was standing about a yard from where the ball landed to whom the pass quite clearly was intended.

A Philbin/Holtz booth WOULD be one of the most interesting ev-ah!!1!!!!!, but I don’t think I could stand having to get up every 2.7 minutes to wipe the screen of both the spit-spray and sweat with which they most assuredly would douse it.

Can’t agree more that Haden and Hammond are a cataclysm of suck. Don’t criticize them on a Notre Dame message board, however, or you’ll feel the wrath of 1,000 “You should just be happy we get all the home games on national TV!” comments. Those people are obviously morons. Just because the game is on national TV doesn’t forgive the horrible announcing, shitty production value and 4+-hour home field advantage-killing game time. Seriously, Haden and Hammond have one fucking job in the fall, and that is Notre Dame football. You would think they could at least be bothered to learn the roster or even have a general idea of the races of the players (two years ago, Hammond referred to George West, who is black, as Chase Anastasio, who is white and a really terrible football player who was never on the field anyway; how the fuck does that even happen to anyone who is paying attention?).

Agreed with all the previous ND comments. The NBC broadcast team is awful. Hammond even sucks at Olympic track and field, and Hayden isn’t much better.
